Overview

Kestra is a workflow orchestration platform for technical teams that need to coordinate jobs across tools and runtimes. It suits organizations comfortable defining workflows in YAML, while its visual builder offers another way to work. Its appeal is the combination of execution controls and broad integrations; teams that need enterprise access governance should weigh the Enterprise Edition.

Key features

Define and manage executions

Flows describe tasks, dependencies, conditions, triggers and runtime parameters in YAML. That gives technical teams a structured way to define workflow logic, but may be a poor fit where nontechnical users need to build everything visually. The visual workflow builder is a useful alternative, though the platform's declarative approach remains central.

Retries, failure policies and timeouts govern how tasks respond when work fails or runs long. Concurrency limits and worker assignment help teams manage execution, while log capture, observability and human approvals add oversight. Together, these controls make Kestra more suitable for operational workflows than a basic sequence of scheduled tasks.

Connect services, languages and agents

Kestra advertises more than 2,000 plugins, with integrations including Airbyte, AWS, Azure, BigQuery, dbt, Docker, GitHub, Kafka, Kubernetes, Slack, Snowflake and Terraform. It can orchestrate SQL, Python, shell, APIs, Terraform, dbt, Spark and custom tools in one workflow. That breadth is valuable when a process crosses several systems, though teams should choose it for orchestration needs rather than assume every integration removes setup work.

An MCP server lets AI agents call flows exposed as tools. This gives teams a path to connect agent activity with defined workflows, rather than making the platform only about conventional scheduled jobs.

Pricing

Kestra offers an Open Source plan with declarative workflows, event-driven scheduling, unlimited flows and executions, and 1,200+ plugins. It is the clearest starting point for teams able to self-host and manage their own operations. The plan price is custom pricing.

Kestra Cloud provides fully managed hosting, automatic scaling, built-in security and governance, SOC 2 compliance, and a pay-as-you-scale model. It is aimed at teams that prefer managed infrastructure; its price is custom pricing. The cloud offer includes up to two months free with full access while a team gets set up.

Enterprise Edition adds LDAP and SCIM, custom RBAC, SSO, audit logs, multiple tenants, worker groups and task runners. It supports cloud, on-premises and air-gapped deployment, and includes a customer success program and enterprise support with an SLA. This is the relevant tier for organizations with stronger access-control or deployment requirements, at custom pricing.

A free plan and free trial are available. The cloud trial lasts up to two months; no seat or usage cap is stated for the Open Source plan beyond its unlimited flows and executions.

Platforms

Kestra supports API, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web and Windows. Docker and Kubernetes are self-hosting options, and setup instructions cover macOS, Windows and Linux. The hybrid deployment model gives teams a choice between running the platform themselves and using cloud or enterprise deployment options. Kestra Cloud advertises SOC 2 Type 1 and Type 2 and GDPR status through its Trust Center.

Who it's for

Kestra is a strong fit for engineering and operations teams coordinating data, infrastructure and application work across different tools. YAML definitions and controls over failures, concurrency and worker assignment suit workflows where execution behavior matters. The Open Source plan suits teams prepared to self-host; Kestra Cloud suits those preferring managed hosting; Enterprise Edition fits organizations requiring SSO, auditability, multi-tenancy or air-gapped deployment.

It is less compelling for teams seeking a purely visual, low-configuration automation tool, or for buyers who need a published price to compare plans directly.

Pros and cons

Pros: YAML flows can combine multiple languages and services, making Kestra useful for cross-system orchestration.
Pros: Retries, timeouts, failure policies, concurrency limits and worker assignment give teams practical control over execution.
Pros: Unlimited flows and executions on Open Source make it possible to start without those plan caps.
Pros: Enterprise deployment spans cloud, on-premises and air-gapped environments, with access controls and SLA-backed support.
Cons: YAML-centered workflow definition may be a barrier for teams that want visual construction to be their primary method.
Cons: Open Source self-hosting means the team takes on platform operation; managed hosting requires moving to Kestra Cloud.
Cons: Custom pricing across the plans makes cost comparison harder before engaging with Kestra.

Alternatives

For a more bounded integration flow, Celigo may suit teams that can work within its free plan's 2 endpoints, 1 flow and 1 production environment. Skyvia is worth considering for modest scheduled integrations: its free plan allows 10k records per month, 2 scheduled integrations and once-a-day scheduling, with schedules expiring after 30 days.

Make is an option for teams whose needs fit 1,000 credits per month, 2 active scenarios and a 15-minute minimum interval on its free plan. Albato may fit smaller automations limited to 100 transactions, 5 active automations and 2 steps per automation, with unlimited apps and connections.

Latenode may suit workflows that fit its free plan's 10,000 CPU seconds per month, 5 active workflows and 1 parallel execution. Workato Agentic offers a free plan with 50,000 one-time credits, an alternative for teams evaluating that credit-based allowance.

Zapier is a simpler-scale option where 100 tasks per month and two-step workflows on its free plan are sufficient. Pabbly Connect is another option for web-based workflows; its free plan provides 100 tasks per month and unlimited workflows.

Verdict

Choose Kestra if your technical team needs to coordinate workflows across languages and services with meaningful control over execution, and can either self-host or budget for a managed or enterprise deployment. Its breadth and operational controls are the main reasons to choose it; teams that prioritize visual-first automation or need clear plan prices should look elsewhere.
