Overview

Khan Academy is a nonprofit learning platform built around free academic courses and practice, with separate tools for learners, teachers, and young children. It suits students and families looking for core-subject study support, as well as educators who want classroom practice and planning tools. Its breadth and free core make it a strong supplement to instruction, but it is not a route to degrees or course-completion certificates.

Key features

The catalog spans more than 840 free courses in core K–12 and early-college subjects. Personalized practice is designed to help learners build mastery and work through gaps, making the platform useful for reinforcing classwork or independent study. The trade-off for learners who need formal proof of study is clear: Khan Academy offers neither degrees nor completion certificates.

Khanmigo guides learners toward answers across subjects from elementary school through college. That guided approach is suited to learners who benefit from working through problems rather than receiving only a result. Paid learner and parent subscriptions are available only in the United States, and the subscriber must be at least 18, live in the country, and have a U.S. billing address.

Teacher tools support lesson planning, feedback, summaries of student work, rubrics, and exit tickets. Khan Academy for Teachers combines standards-aligned practice and progress tracking with AI support. Teachers can import student rosters from Google Classroom; larger district plans add Clever or ClassLink rostering and single sign-on.

The Android and iOS apps support interactive exercises, mastery levels, synced progress, offline video downloads, and a scratchpad. Offline downloads are useful when a learner cannot rely on a continuous connection, while the synchronized progress helps keep mobile study aligned with other use. Khan Academy Kids is a separate free, ad-free app for children ages 2–8, with interactive books, games, and creative lessons.

Pricing

The core Khan Academy plan is 0.00 USD per free and is aimed at independent learners, teachers, and parents. It gives users a broad learning platform without a subscription charge. Khanmigo Teacher Tools is also 0.00 USD per free, though availability depends on the educator’s locale.

Individual Khanmigo Parent and Learner subscriptions each cost 4.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and are available only in the United States. The age, residence, and billing-address requirements narrow who can subscribe; the free core platform remains the option for learners outside those limits.

For U.S. schools and districts with 1,000 or fewer student licenses, Enterprise Starter costs 10.00 USD per year, billed at $10 per student per year. Enterprise is for organizations with more than 1,000 student licenses and has custom pricing. It adds administrator reporting and data insights, single sign-on, automated Clever or ClassLink rostering, and live professional learning and implementation support. These district features are a better fit for large deployments than for individual study.

Platforms

Khan Academy is available on Android, iOS, and the web. The mobile app includes offline video downloads; the separate Khan Academy Kids app serves children ages 2–8. The service provides a Help Center and Community Support links. Its privacy policy describes reasonable organizational and technical safeguards for personal information. District plans state that student privacy and data security are SOC-audited and FERPA- and COPPA-compliant, with a VPAT for WCAG 2.1AA.

Who it's for

Khan Academy is a good fit for K–12 and early-college learners who want free subject practice, families seeking a no-cost early-learning app, and teachers who need classroom practice and planning support. Schools can consider its district plans when they need rostering, reporting, or implementation support. Learners who require credentials, and people outside the U.S. seeking paid Khanmigo, should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pro: More than 840 free courses cover core K–12 and early-college subjects, giving learners a substantial practice resource without a platform fee.
Pro: Mobile exercises, synced mastery progress, and offline video downloads support study across devices and without a continuous connection.
Pro: Free, ad-free Khan Academy Kids offers a distinct early-learning option for ages 2–8.
Con: No degrees or completion certificates make the platform unsuitable when a learner needs a formal credential.
Con: Paid Khanmigo is restricted to adult subscribers living in the U.S. with a U.S. billing address, limiting access for many families and learners.

Alternatives

Choose Duolingo instead if you want a freemium learning app with a one-week free trial and support for Android, iOS, macOS, and web.

JumpLMS may fit a small course group better: its free plan covers five learners and unlimited courses, while its Starter plan supports up to 20 learners for 18.00 GBP per month.

Brilliant is worth considering for learners comfortable with a daily free allowance of two lessons or practice sets; its listed Group Annual plan includes three seats, with extra seats priced at $10.10/month each.

For live quizzes and polls, consider Kahoot! 360, whose Pro Start plan costs 19.00 USD per month billed $228 annually and supports up to 50 participants.

DataCamp is an alternative for professional learning: its free Basic plan gives the first chapter of every course, a professional profile, and limited practice and project access.

Choose LearnWorlds instead if you want to launch a paid course; its Starter plan costs 29.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes 1,000 active learners per month and one admin.

TalentLMS may better suit a small organization training a defined group: its free plan has no time limit and covers up to five active users and ten active courses.

TouchClass is another paid option.

Verdict

Choose Khan Academy for free, broad academic practice, especially if you are supporting K–12 or early-college learning and can benefit from its mobile tools or teacher features. Its strongest case is the combination of a large free catalog, personalized practice, and a separate early-childhood app. Look elsewhere if credentials are essential or if paid Khanmigo is unavailable to you because of its U.S. and age requirements.
