Overview

Editors work on the site itself, changing text, images, documents, blocks, galleries, events, and calendar content. Publishing writes a Git commit, which fits sites already hosted on services that redeploy when the repository changes. Kiln supports GitHub repositories and hosts including Cloudflare Pages, Netlify, Vercel, and GitHub Pages.

Drafts, scheduled publishing, named versions, history, and restoration give owners tools to manage and recover content changes. Content stays as plain HTML in the customer's GitHub repository on every plan, and the site can be kept after leaving Kiln. That is a meaningful safeguard against CMS lock-in, though owners still need a static site and a GitHub-based publishing path.

Key features

Editing and review

Owners sign in with GitHub; invited editors and members can use Google sign-in without GitHub accounts. Access can be limited to pages or sections, which makes delegation more practical when different people maintain different parts of a site. Comment-only reviewer seats let people give feedback without editing, while suggest mode lets owners approve or decline proposed changes field by field.

Automation and safeguards

A REST API and kiln-mcp let scripts and agents edit scoped, sanitized fields. Optional AI assistance uses an API key supplied by the customer, so its use is not bundled as an opaque service. The setup guide says the GitHub App can access only repositories selected during installation, and only invited Google-email addresses can sign in as editors or members. Those boundaries are relevant for owners granting access beyond the core team.

Uploaded documents have a 15 MB per-file limit. Kiln supports static HTML sites and documents a source mode for Astro-generated sites; Eleventy, Hugo, and Jekyll adapters are planned to follow. That makes the current fit clearer for HTML and Astro projects than for teams expecting ready-made support for those other generators.

Pricing

Self-hosted is 0.00 USD per free, billed Free forever, and open source under AGPL-3.0. It includes community support on GitHub, but the owner must run the worker and GitHub App and provide the site host. This is the low-cost route for teams prepared to handle that operational work.

Kiln Cloud costs 4.99 USD per month, billed monthly and recurring, with a 7-day free trial. It removes the requirement to self-host Kiln's worker, making it the entry paid option for owners who want the service managed without paying for the fully managed tier.

Fully managed costs 14.99 USD per month, billed monthly and recurring, also with a 7-day free trial. It includes priority support, which better suits owners who want more direct support; the price is three times Kiln Cloud's monthly rate. Concierge setup & tagging costs 399.00 USD per once, billed one-time, for optional hand-tagging, menu and editor-access configuration, and one revision round. Its one-off price makes it a setup service rather than a recurring plan.

Platforms

Kiln is available as a web service, through an API, and as self-hosted software. GitHub is its supported Git provider, so teams using another provider or a workflow that does not publish from GitHub should look elsewhere.

Who it's for

Kiln makes sense for people building static sites who need clients or other non-technical editors to keep content current. It is especially suitable when owners want page- or section-level access, a review step, and repository-owned content. It is less suitable for sites on a different content-management system, sites that do not deploy from GitHub, or teams seeking broader generator support today.

Pros and cons

Pros: On-page editing spans common site content, while drafts, scheduling, history, and restoration support a controlled publishing process.
Pros: Page- and section-level access, reviewer seats, and field-by-field suggestions give owners useful ways to delegate without giving every contributor the same role.
Pros: Content remains plain HTML in the customer's repository on every plan, and can be retained after leaving Kiln.
Cons: GitHub is the only supported Git provider, and publishing depends on a Git commit workflow.
Cons: The free self-hosted plan requires the owner to run the worker and GitHub App and supply hosting; it is free in price, not in operational responsibility.
Cons: Uploaded documents are capped at 15 MB per file, and documented generator support currently centers on static HTML and Astro source mode.

Alternatives

Decap CMS is another free-plan, self-hosted option if a reader wants a Git-based CMS alternative; its free plan lists one site and one seat. Siteleaf is worth comparing for its free Developer plan, which includes 100 MB, 100 pages, public GitHub repositories, API access within limits, and community support; its Personal plan costs 7.00 USD per month when paid annually.

Mattrbld offers a free hosted instance intended for small-scale private projects, with no availability guarantee. Netlify may suit readers comparing hosting and deployment services; its free plan includes 300 credits per month, one concurrent build, and one team owner. deco CMS offers an open-source core that can be self-hosted on your own infrastructure. TinaCMS has a free plan for two users and two roles, with community support. HugoCMS is another option with a free plan described as open source, multilingual, and offering unlimited updates. Keystatic has a free plan for up to three users per team.

Verdict

Kiln is a strong choice for static-site owners who want non-technical contributors to edit and review content while the repository remains the source of record. Its combination of scoped access, publishing controls, and retained HTML is the reason to choose it; dependence on GitHub and the self-hosting work required by the free plan are the reasons to look elsewhere or pay for managed service.
