Overview

Koala Sampler turns microphone recordings or imported audio into beats and tracks, with sampling, sequencing and effects in one app. It suits beat-makers who want to build from captured sounds on mobile or desktop. Its appeal is a compact workflow with MIDI and useful export options; platform-specific pricing and separately sold add-ons make the full choice less straightforward.

Key features

Koala can record up to 64 samples and offers a high-resolution sequencer, keyboard mode, quantization and swing. That is a capable foundation for sample-led beats, but the sample ceiling may constrain projects that depend on larger collections. Sample import gives users another way to bring source audio into the workflow.

Projects export as WAV loops or tracks, and the iOS version can also export Ableton Live Sets. MIDI control and Ableton Link support external control and Wi-Fi jamming, useful when Koala needs to fit into a broader music setup rather than work alone.

The Samurai add-on brings time-stretching, a piano roll, auto-chop, three-band EQ, a polyphonic synth and MIDI output. It is the deeper upgrade for users who want more editing and sequencing tools. Mixer adds four channels, a main bus and five effect slots per channel; it also hosts external plugins on iOS, Mac and Windows, but not Android. That platform gap matters if plugin hosting is central to the workflow.

Sample packs sold in the app are royalty-free for music creation, but cannot be resold, redistributed or repackaged in other sample products.

Pricing

Koala's platform-specific terms call for checking which version and extras a project requires before buying. The iOS app costs 4.99 USD per once as a one-time App Store purchase for iPhone and iPad; in-app purchases are separate. It is the clearest priced entry for mobile users, but Samurai and Mixer are not included in that purchase.

Mac, Windows, Linux and Raspberry Pi desktop builds are free for now. The Windows build is in beta, so Windows users should weigh that status against the appeal of a free desktop option. Android supports up to 64 recorded samples, but its price is not established here.

The desktop plugin has a free billed 7-day trial per computer. After the trial it stops working until a licence is purchased. A plugin licence can be active on up to three computers at once and is for one person. Desktop plugin checkout is processed by Paddle, which collects payment details; the maker says it does not see card numbers. The plugin sends computer information to track active licence computers, while projects and audio stay on the computer.

Platforms

Koala is available on Android, iOS, Linux, macOS and Windows, with desktop builds also offered for Raspberry Pi. Mobile apps do not require an account and, according to the maker, do not send projects or audio to it; microphone, file and photo permissions stay on the device. Desktop plugin licensing involves computer information, a distinction worth noting for privacy-conscious users.

The maker provides a help knowledge base, manual and learning resources, as well as a contact route. Desktop plugin users should not expect a stated support response time.

Who it's for

Koala is a good fit for producers who want to capture or import sounds, shape them into beats, and move projects through MIDI or export. The free desktop builds are particularly appealing for exploring its sampler workflow without an upfront desktop-app price. It is a weaker fit for users who need plugin hosting on Android, more than 64 recorded samples, or a clearly priced Android plan.

Pros and cons

Pro: Recording and sample import meet sequencing, quantization and swing in one beat-making workflow.
Pro: WAV export, iOS Ableton Live Set export, MIDI control and Ableton Link offer several ways to connect or carry work forward.
Pro: Free desktop builds cover Mac, Windows, Linux and Raspberry Pi for now.
Con: Samurai and Mixer are separate purchases, so the iOS app's one-time price does not cover every capability.
Con: Mixer plugin hosting is unavailable on Android, and the Windows desktop build is in beta.
Con: The 64-recorded-sample limit may be tight for larger sample-heavy projects.

Alternatives

For a broader category comparison, see Beat Making Software or Audio Editing Software.

Serato Studio is worth considering for Mac or Windows users who prefer a deck-and-scene workflow: its free tier is limited to one audio track, four decks and four scenes, while the paid Buy plan is 149.

Auxy Studio is an iOS and Mac alternative with a free tier offering a selection of demo sounds.

DAWG is a cross-platform alternative for Android, Linux, Mac and Windows users, with a one-time contribution starting at 5.00 USD.

MilkyTracker is a free option for Linux, Mac and Windows users.

MPC Beats is another free beat-making option for Mac and Windows.

Giada may suit Linux, Mac or Windows users looking specifically for open-source GPL software.

Beatmaker 3 is an iOS, Mac and Windows alternative with paid genre-focused drum instruments, including a 49.00 USD one-time individual title and a 99.50 USD one-time bundle of 17.

KORG Collection is a paid Mac and Windows alternative, with a 399.00 USD one-time plan or a rent-to-own option at 15.99 USD per month for 25 months.

Verdict

Choose Koala Sampler if you want to turn recorded or imported sounds into beats and value sequencing, MIDI and flexible export across mobile and desktop. Its free desktop builds and focused sampling workflow are strong reasons to start there; look elsewhere if Android plugin hosting, a larger recorded-sample capacity or a fully priced core offering on every platform is essential.
