Overview

As you type, Lastslate recognizes screenplay elements such as sluglines, character cues, and dialogue, and saves automatically. Its Beat Board links story beats to script scenes, while built-in tools derive cast lists, location and prop breakdowns, loglines, and one-sheets from a script. Together, those tools keep planning and practical production materials close to the draft.

Lastslate supports Final Draft FDX, Fountain, plain text, and PDF, and can reconstruct editable scenes from PDF screenplays. That helps writers bring in scripts from different workflows, though an editable source file is preferable when one exists. Review links let recipients comment on specific script lines in a browser without an account, with threaded replies attached to a draft.

Key features

AI assistance without dialogue generation

The AI collaborator reads scripts but does not write dialogue, and there are no AI rewriting tools. That suits writers looking for script-focused feedback while retaining authorship, but not those who want generated scenes or dialogue. Companion Mode extends the assistant to a file authored in another editor: it rereads the file after a save and remains read-only. Questions in Companion Mode require Pro or a user-provided model key.

Collaboration and privacy

Pro supports live co-writing by up to 10 writers in one script. Cloud projects and version history are unlimited on Pro and Pro+, while the free plan allows 10 cloud projects and keeps 30 days of version history. Scripts are stored locally by default; optional cloud backup is encrypted in transit and at rest. The company says it does not train AI models on scripts, prompts, or completions, but an AI request sends the relevant script excerpt, prompt, and session conversation context to the provider. Paid users can connect their own Claude, OpenAI, or Gemini account, or a model on their computer; the key is stored in the computer's keychain.

Pricing

The free plan is free and includes the full editor, PDF and FDX export, Beat Board, 10 cloud projects, 30-day version history, and a limited AI collaborator. It is a credible starting point for solo writers, but the project and history caps matter for larger or long-running work.

Pro: 15.00 USD per month, billed month-to-month. It includes $15 AI usage each billing cycle, unlimited cloud projects and version history, and co-writing for up to 10 writers. This is the practical upgrade for ongoing collaborative work.
Pro+: 45.00 USD per month, billed month-to-month. It includes three times the AI allowance of Pro alongside unlimited projects and history and the same 10-writer limit. It is for users whose AI use exceeds Pro's included amount.
Student Pro: 10.00 USD / mo. or $100 USD / year with a school email, for students in the US and Canada. It includes the Pro plan, with eligibility limited by location and school email.
Individual (Pro): $15 USD / mo. or $150 USD / year, with a 7-day free trial. It includes extended AI collaborator limits, advanced models, AI scaffolding, review links, unlimited cloud projects and version history, real-time co-writing, and usage-based pricing. The annual option costs 150.00 USD per year.

The 14-day trial is also offered, and the individual Pro listing specifies a 7-day free trial. Check which offer applies before starting; the monthly plans are month-to-month, while the annual individual option is billed yearly. The cheaper free tier trades away unlimited capacity and full AI access, while student pricing is restricted to qualifying students.

Platforms

Lastslate runs on macOS 12 or later, supporting Apple Silicon and Intel, and on 64-bit Windows 10 and 11. The Mac app is notarized by Apple; the Windows installer is code-signed and updates automatically. Mobile platforms are not supported.

Who it's for

Choose Lastslate if screenplay-specific formatting, linked story planning, script-derived production tools, and mixed-format import matter more than AI-generated writing. It can also suit teams that need line-level browser comments or live co-writing. Solo writers with modest cloud needs can begin free; writers with larger archives, extended history, or shared drafting should weigh a paid plan. It is a poor fit for writers who need mobile drafting or AI that rewrites dialogue.

Pros and cons

Pro: Screenplay-aware formatting and automatic saving reduce manual formatting work while drafting.
Pro: FDX, Fountain, text, and PDF support, including editable-scene reconstruction from PDFs, eases migration between script formats.
Pro: Review links need no recipient account, and Pro enables up to 10 writers to co-write a script live.
Pro: Local storage by default and the option to use a personal or local AI model give users choices over storage and provider accounts.
Con: AI requests transmit the relevant script excerpt and conversation context to the selected provider, so users should consider that before sending sensitive material.
Con: AI does not write dialogue or rewrite scenes, excluding writers seeking generative drafting assistance.
Con: The free plan caps cloud projects at 10 and version history at 30 days, which can constrain long-running work.

Alternatives

Inkwell is a better fit for writers who want iOS support, offline editing, unlimited free scripts, or no-account use; its free plan also supports FDX, Fountain, and PDF import and export. Screenplay Assistant is worth considering for broad platform coverage, including Android, iOS, and web, with a free Spark plan limited to one project. ScreenWeaver offers a free forever plan with unlimited projects and pages plus PDF and Final Draft export, and runs on Linux as well as desktop and mobile platforms. ScriptDraft is an option for writers who want an Android or iOS Fountain editor with free PDF, Fountain, and FDX export.

Saga, Fabric, FluvAI, and Premiere.Studio are other alternatives to compare.

Verdict

Lastslate is a strong choice for screenwriters who want a desktop editor that connects formatting, planning, production breakdowns, and collaboration. Its screenplay-focused workflow and flexible file support are the main reasons to choose it; the limits are its lack of AI rewriting, mobile apps, and the need to account for provider-bound script excerpts when using AI. Start with free for solo projects, and move to a paid tier when project capacity, history, or live collaboration becomes essential.
