Overview

Synology Photos is a library manager for photos and videos stored on a Synology NAS, rather than a standalone cloud photo account. It suits people who already own the required NAS and want mobile backup, organization, and controlled sharing in one place. Its strongest case is keeping a home or team library under NAS ownership; the trade-off is that the NAS requirement and some format-preview limits shape the experience.

Key features

Backup and organization

The mobile app can automatically back up photos and videos to a Synology NAS, giving phone owners a direct route to their own storage. Custom and conditional albums, automatic grouping, and face and object recognition provide useful ways to sort a growing collection. Recognition works only on certain NAS models, so it should not be a deciding feature until the specific model is confirmed. Face search is supported.

Sharing and collaboration

Users can share individual photos, videos, or albums through links protected by a password or expiration date. Shared Space allows selected users to collaborate, with folder-level controls for access and editing. That makes it practical for family or group libraries where the NAS owner wants to control who can change shared content.

Formats and uploads

Original-quality storage and RAW files are supported. HEIC and HEVC previews, as well as compressed video playback, require Synology Image Assistant, adding a dependency for people whose libraries rely on those formats. Drag-and-drop uploads are limited to 5,000 files per upload, a constraint for very large one-time imports.

Pricing

Synology Photos is free, with no paid premium tier. The Free plan is free and requires a Synology NAS; the Synology Photos plan is also free, free, and requires a Synology NAS. Both reflect the same practical condition: the app costs nothing, but private photo storage depends on owning the required hardware. There is no free trial because the service is free. The no-cost plan includes original-quality storage, face search, shared albums, family sharing, a desktop app, and video backup.

Platforms

Synology Photos supports Android, iOS, macOS, web, Windows, and extension platforms. The mobile app requires iOS 16 or above or Android 11 or above. Apple TV and Android TV apps are supported, and Chrome and Safari are recommended for web use. This range covers common phone and desktop workflows, though the NAS remains central to storage.

Who it's for

Choose Synology Photos if you own a Synology NAS and want automatic phone backup, original-quality storage, album tools, and link-based sharing without a software subscription. It is also a sensible option for households or small groups that need folder-level collaboration. Look elsewhere if you need a photo service that works independently of a Synology NAS, or if your workflow depends on HEIC or HEVC previews without Synology Image Assistant.

Pros and cons

Pros

No software fee: The service is free, with no paid premium tier, while offering original-quality storage and video backup.
Controlled sharing: Link passwords or expiration dates and folder-level access and editing rights give owners meaningful control over shared libraries.
Useful organization: Albums, automatic grouping, and face search support both deliberate curation and finding items in a larger collection.

Cons

Hardware prerequisite: A Synology NAS is required, so the free price does not help readers seeking a standalone cloud destination.
Model-dependent recognition: Face and object recognition are limited to certain NAS models.
Preview dependency: HEIC/HEVC previews and compressed video playback require Synology Image Assistant.
Bulk-upload cap: Drag-and-drop uploads stop at 5,000 files per upload.

Alternatives

For a broader comparison, browse Photo Management Software or Photo Storage Services. Readers evaluating storage infrastructure can also compare NAS Backup Software, Storage Migration Software, Storage Replication Software, and Google Workspace Backup Software.

Google Cloud Storage is worth considering when you want a freemium, usage-based storage service with API and desktop support rather than a NAS-centered photo library. Cloudsfer fits readers comparing a web-based freemium service with a 1GB free tier and a paid 100GB Essential plan. Komprise Intelligent Data Management is a paid, trial-available option for readers looking at broader data management across API, Linux, self-hosted, and web environments. NetApp XCP offers a free license described as renewable for another year, making it an option for readers focused on Linux, Windows, or self-hosted storage workflows. Azure Storage Mover charges no fee for its migration capabilities, though standard storage, transaction, and networking charges apply, so it suits readers moving data to Azure or AWS rather than managing a photo library. Peer Global File Service is another option. Cirrus Migrate Cloud offers a 30-day, 1 TB trial for readers evaluating migration to Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP. CopyRight2 is a paid Windows alternative for readers considering server or NAS licensing.

Verdict

Synology Photos is the right choice for Synology NAS owners who want free mobile backup, capable organization, and controlled family or group sharing while keeping their library on their own hardware. The NAS requirement is the decisive reason to look elsewhere: without one, this is not a standalone photo-storage service.
