Overview

LingQ is a language-learning service for people who want to build study around reading and listening to material they care about. Its strongest fit is the independent learner who wants to turn browser content into lessons; its free tier is restrictive enough that regular use points toward a paid membership.

Key features

LingQ supports 52 languages and uses reading, listening, and vocabulary discovery in context. Learners can save unfamiliar words and phrases for personalized review, while a placement test offers a way to get started at an appropriate level. That content-led approach suits readers and listeners who want to learn from material beyond a fixed course sequence; it is less compelling for someone seeking a fully open-ended free study tool.

The LingQ Importer browser extension turns browser content into interactive lessons, and content can be imported from Netflix, TikTok, YouTube, Spotify, Apple TV, Disney+, and Amazon Prime. This breadth gives learners considerable choice over what to study, though the free allowance of five imported lessons limits how far they can build a library before paying. Offline access is a membership feature, useful for studying away from a connection.

Users can earn points by tutoring, referring friends, and sharing lessons in the Library. Membership or payment questions can be sent by email, with replies usually arriving within 24 hours.

Pricing

LingQ is freemium. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes 20 saved words and phrases, five imported lessons, and one audio playlist. It is a reasonable way to explore the learning method, but the caps make it a poor fit for sustained vocabulary building or frequent importing.

Premium costs 215.76 USD per year, charged upfront for a 24-month duration, with 40% off and recurring billing until canceled. It removes the saved-word and imported-lesson limits, adds full sentence translations and offline access, and includes access to all supported languages with no limit on simultaneous study. This is the more suitable plan for learners committed to regular use, especially those studying multiple languages or relying on imported content.

Premium Plus costs 269.99 USD per year, charged upfront for a 12-month duration, with 25% off and recurring billing until canceled. It adds 6x audio transcription, AI voices, Advanced Lynx Chat, and AI simplified lessons. Those additions are for learners who want these specific AI and audio tools; Premium is the more focused choice if unlimited importing, translation, offline access, and language access are the priorities.

All listed membership prices are in USD. Fees are charged upfront for the selected duration and recur until canceled; there are no setup fees, long-term contracts, or cancellation fees. Users can cancel trial or subscription auto-renewal at any time, and can upgrade, downgrade, or cancel their plan at any time; upgrades and downgrades take effect immediately.

Platforms

LingQ is available on web, Android, iOS, and as a browser extension for Chrome, Safari, Firefox, and Edge. Its cloud, mobile, and extension options make it accessible across common study settings, while offline access is tied to membership.

Who it's for

LingQ is best for self-directed learners who want to study through real-world reading and listening, bring online content into lessons, or work across several languages. It is a weaker fit for someone who wants generous free limits or a course centered on a fixed sequence of lessons rather than learner-selected material.

Pros and cons

Pro: Imports from a wide range of video, audio, and streaming services let learners choose content that matches their interests.
Pro: Premium combines unlimited saved vocabulary and imported lessons with full sentence translations, offline access, and all supported languages.
Con: The free plan's 20 saved items and five imported lessons restrict regular use.
Con: Premium is billed upfront for a 24-month duration, so its annual price is attached to a longer commitment period even though there are no long-term contracts or cancellation fees.
Con: Premium Plus costs more and its extra tools may not matter to learners focused mainly on reading, listening, and vocabulary review.

Alternatives

Readlang is another freemium option across web, Android, iOS, and browser extension, and may suit readers who want a similar broad platform mix. News in Slow Spanish is worth considering for learners seeking a Spanish-focused audio subscription, with an audio-only edition at 6.90 USD per month. News in Slow Italian offers a focused alternative for Italian learners, including an audio-only plan at 5.90 USD per month. E-clair may suit mobile learners who want collections and podcast audio, though its free plan limits collections and monthly transcription. Lingopie offers a 7-day full-access free trial for learners who want to sample its content, languages, and features before deciding. Learning with Texts is a free option for people comfortable running a local web and database server with PHP. Beelinguapp is a mobile alternative for learners interested in unlocked stories and news with glossary and flashcard practice. SpeakAccent is a free iOS option for learners seeking a native-language podcast player.

Verdict

Choose LingQ if you want to make your own reading and listening material the center of language study, especially across multiple languages. Its importer and contextual vocabulary review are the main reasons to choose it; the tight free caps and upfront Premium billing are the main reasons to compare alternatives first.
