Overview

Locize is a localization platform for software teams coordinating developers with translators and reviewers. It suits projects that need translation work to move alongside code and language updates to reach users independently of app releases. Its appeal is that joined-up workflow; the trade-off is managing limits on users, languages, words, and delivery as projects grow.

Key features

Developers can sync keys and source strings through CLI or CI, while translators and reviewers work in a dedicated interface. Translation memory, glossary management, in-context editing, screenshots for context, and configurable review workflows help teams maintain consistency and resolve questions in context. Machine and generative AI translation options add another route for drafting translations, but the platform’s strongest case is for teams that need an ongoing handoff between development and localization.

Translations can be delivered through a CDN or API without a full app redeploy. Integrations cover i18next, React, Vue, Angular, Next.js, Node.js, iOS and Android, Figma, and PHP, Python, Java, and .NET. That range makes Locize a plausible fit for varied web and mobile stacks, although teams should confirm that their specific setup suits its sync and delivery workflow.

Security features include MFA options, SAML 2.0 SSO, API-token permissions, role-based permissions, backups, and encryption at rest for personal data and stored third-party API credentials. Customer data is hosted on AWS in Ireland, with encrypted disaster-recovery copies of translation namespaces and project configurations on BunnyCDN Storage in the EU. Locize is subject to Swiss FADP and EU GDPR and offers a DPA covering both.

Pricing

The Free plan is free and includes 100K standard CDN downloads per month, 2,000 words, two languages, five namespaces, and one user. That is enough to assess a small project, but the single seat and two-language ceiling limit its usefulness for collaborative or broadly localized products.

Starter costs 7.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and raises the allowance to 1M standard CDN downloads, 15,000 words, five languages, 10 namespaces, and five users. It is the lowest-cost paid option for a small team, but remains constrained by its language and namespace caps. Starter-Plus costs 19.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and provides 3M downloads, 30,000 words, seven languages, 25 namespaces, and five users; it adds room for content and language growth, not more seats.

Growth costs 49.00 USD per month, billed monthly, with 5M standard CDN downloads, 150K pro CDN downloads, 1.5K private downloads, 60,000 words, 10 languages, 50 namespaces, unlimited users, three branches, and five tenants. It is the first listed plan with unlimited users and branch and tenant allowances, making it a better fit for larger teams sharing projects.

Professional costs 99.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and includes 7M standard, 250K pro, and 2.5K private downloads; 100,000 words; 20 languages; 75 namespaces; unlimited users; five branches; and 10 tenants. Professional-Plus costs 149.00 USD per month, billed monthly, with 10M standard, 350K pro, and 3.5K private downloads; 150,000 words; 50 languages; 150 namespaces; unlimited users; five branches; and 20 tenants. Enterprise costs 199.00 USD per month, billed monthly, and raises those limits to 15M standard, 500K pro, and 5K private downloads; 200,000 words; 150 languages; 300 namespaces; unlimited users; 10 branches; and 50 tenants. These higher tiers make sense when their added capacity matches a project's scale; otherwise, their expanded quotas may be unnecessary.

The Free plan has no more than 100K standard CDN downloads per month, and exceeding 110% of included standard CDN volume automatically blocks a project on fixed plans. On Free, translations are automatically unpublished instead, a consequence worth weighing before relying on it for a live product. A 14-day trial is available. Platforms

Locize lists Android, iOS, web, and API platforms, with API delivery also supporting in-game localization.

Who it's for

Locize is best suited to software teams that need developers, managers, translators, and reviewers to share an ongoing localization process. Teams with modest needs can start on Free, while larger groups can move to plans with more languages, content, downloads, and collaboration capacity. A small project needing only a few translations may find the workflow and tiered limits more than it needs.

Pros and cons

Pro: CLI or CI syncing connects translation work to development, while CDN or API delivery lets language updates ship without a full app redeploy.
Pro: Translation memory, glossary management, screenshots, in-context editing, and review workflows support consistency and translator context.
Pro: Security controls include MFA options, SAML 2.0 SSO, role-based permissions, and API-token controls.
Con: Free allows one user and two languages, so even a small collaborative project may need a paid plan.
Con: Standard CDN overages have meaningful consequences: fixed plans block projects above 110% of included volume, while Free unpublishes translations.
Con: Plans impose separate word, language, namespace, and download limits, so choosing a tier requires matching several quotas to the project.

Alternatives

Crowdin is another freemium option with a free plan and support across Android, iOS, web, desktop, and API platforms; consider it when that platform range is a better match.

Weblate offers a self-hosted option alongside web, Linux, and API platforms. Its Premium Cloud 10k plan costs 47.00 EUR per month for 10,000 hosted strings and unlimited languages, projects, and components, making it worth considering when those stated allowances suit the project.

Transglot offers a free plan with 100,000 words to start, then 10,000 per month, one project, 14 target languages, and three seats. It may suit teams that can work within those project and seat limits.

OneSky is another freemium translation platform for Android, iOS, web, and API.

Tolgee offers a free plan with 30,000 words, three seats, standard localization features, automation, and machine translation. Consider it when those allowances fit a smaller team's needs.

Lugath is a free option for web and API platforms.

Gridly is a paid web and API option; its Basic CMS plan costs 99.00 EUR per month and includes three seats, 2,500 automated updates per month, and 3,000 API requests per month.

Localazy has a free plan with 200 source keys and unlimited seats and languages, a possible alternative for teams prioritizing those allowances.

Verdict

Choose Locize if your software team wants developers and translation specialists to work in a shared localization workflow and publish language updates without rebuilding the app. Its integration range and review tools support that model, but Free is tightly capped and download overages can interrupt delivery. Teams should look elsewhere if their project cannot fit the plan limits or needs a simpler translation process.
