Overview

LOGINventory is an on-premises platform for discovering and documenting devices, software, configurations, and permissions across an IT network. It is a strong fit for IT teams that need broad inventory coverage while keeping inventory records on their own infrastructure. Its main trade-off is that the server depends on Windows and SQL Server.

Key features

Discovery is agentless for devices on the network, using WMI/RPC, SNMP, or SSH. That can simplify coverage across a mixed estate, but collection still depends on suitable connectivity and permissions. An Offline Agent extends collection to Windows, Linux, and macOS devices outside the LAN.

LOGINventory covers Windows, Linux/Unix, macOS, SNMP network devices, multiple hypervisors, Microsoft cloud services, AWS virtual machines, and Exchange. The maker says a Windows device can yield up to 1,117 individual values by default, useful for detailed records when administrators need more than a basic device list.

The Inventory Edition handles discovery and documentation. The SAM Edition adds license management, target-versus-actual comparisons, software usage measurement, and compliance reports, making it the better fit when inventory must support software licensing decisions as well.

Integration options include a REST API with JSON, PowerShell, CSV, custom scan scripts, and direct connections to MDM and ITSM/CMDB products. Named integrations include Microsoft Intune, baramundi, APPTEC360, Sophos Mobile, Kyberna ky2help, iET ITSM, helpLine, and i-net HelpDesk. This range gives teams several ways to connect inventory with existing workflows.

The customer runs the system on its own infrastructure, with inventory data stored in a local SQL database; the maker says those records are not sent to it. The optional LIA AI assistant routes requests through Azure OpenAI with automatic anonymization and can be disabled. Neither LOGINventory nor Schmidt’s LOGIN GmbH is ISO 27001 certified; the product includes a manually completed control template. Organizations with a certification requirement should weigh that limitation carefully.

Pricing

The Forever-Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and supports 20 devices. It gives small environments a no-cost way to maintain an inventory, but the device cap makes it unsuitable for larger networks.

Inventory360 costs 6.50 EUR per year and SAM360 costs 8.60 EUR per year, each for 0–249 assets; prices exclude VAT. These entry tiers are aimed at smaller estates, with SAM360 adding the software asset management capabilities that distinguish the SAM Edition. For larger networks, annual per-asset pricing falls by tier:

Inventory Edition: €6.50 per asset for 0–249; €5.90 for 250–499; €5.20 for 500–999; €4.50 for 1,000–2,499; and €3.70 for 2,500–4,999. 5,000+ assets are individually priced on request.
SAM Edition: €8.60 per asset for 0–249; €7.40 for 250–499; €6.80 for 500–999; €6.00 for 1,000–2,499; and €4.70 for 2,500–4,999. 5,000+ assets are individually priced on request.

Tier prices exclude VAT. A 30-day trial includes the full feature set at the customer’s full network size, requires no credit card, and includes personal support, so teams can assess the system before choosing an edition. Maintenance includes updates and major releases, business-day technical support by email and phone, one hour of remote consulting per year, and helpdesk access.

Platforms

LOGINventory is deployed on premises. Its server requires Windows 10/11 or Windows Server 2016–2025 (x64) and SQL Server 2012 SP4 or later; the installer can include SQL Server Express. That keeps the installation under the customer’s control, but makes it a poor fit for teams unable to operate a Windows server and SQL database.

Who it's for

LOGINventory suits IT managers who need a detailed view of a mixed network, especially those who want to keep inventory data in a local database. The Inventory Edition fits teams focused on documenting assets; the SAM Edition is more appropriate when license tracking, usage measurement, and compliance reporting are also required. Its described audience spans small businesses through enterprises, though the 20-device free plan and asset-based paid tiers create distinct size thresholds.

Pros and cons

Pro: Agentless discovery across several protocols and broad platform coverage can reduce the effort of building a unified inventory.
Pro: Local hosting and SQL storage keep inventory records on customer infrastructure, with the optional AI assistant able to be disabled.
Pro: The full-featured trial at full network size lets teams evaluate coverage before committing.
Con: Server operation requires Windows and SQL Server, adding infrastructure prerequisites that cloud-first or non-Windows teams may not want.
Con: The free plan stops at 20 devices, and paid tiers are asset-based, with custom pricing above 4,999 assets.
Con: The maker states that neither it nor LOGINventory is ISO 27001 certified, which may matter to organizations with formal certification requirements.

Alternatives

For a different discovery tool, runZero has a free Community Edition covering 100 assets, one organization, 10 recurring tasks, and 30 days of data retention; it is worth considering when those limits better match the evaluation scope than LOGINventory’s 20-device free plan.

OCS Inventory is an alternative if open-source software and a community project are priorities.

Verdict

Choose LOGINventory if your team needs detailed discovery and documentation across a varied network, wants to retain inventory data locally, and can support its Windows-and-SQL server requirements. The SAM Edition is the stronger choice when software licensing and compliance belong in the same workflow. Look elsewhere if ISO 27001 certification is mandatory or if the server prerequisites conflict with your operating model.
