Overview

WordPress.com is a hosted website and publishing service for people who want WordPress without arranging hosting separately. It is strongest for bloggers, creators, and organizations that may add memberships or commerce over time. The trade-off is clear: the free tier carries ads, while larger storage allowances and professional tools require paid plans.

Hosting, a global CDN, security protections, and unmetered bandwidth come with every plan. That makes bandwidth less of a planning concern, but storage remains tiered, from 1 GB free to 50 GB on Business and Commerce. Paid annual plans include a custom domain for the first year.

WordPress.com is associated with Automattic, founded in 2005 and headquartered in San Francisco. Readers comparing categories can also browse Blogging Platforms, Personal Website Builders, and Website builders.

Key features

Publishing tools include scheduled posts, blog analytics, memberships, and theme customization with custom code. Those features give a site room to grow beyond basic articles, while newsletters can start free with unlimited subscribers. Payment buttons support PayPal and Stripe; for a fuller store, Commerce adds ecommerce tools and a WooCommerce experience.

Free sites display WordPress.com ads, which Personal removes. Paid plans list unlimited pages, posts, users, and visitors, so storage—not audience or publishing quotas—is the more visible tier distinction. A Jetpack app supports site management on iOS and Android. Support ranges from free support to free 24/7 priority expert support, though the particular level depends on plan.

Business and Commerce are aimed at more involved operations: both include MailPoet Business for 500 subscribers, SFTP/SSH, WP-CLI, Git commands, GitHub Deployments, real-time backups, and one-click restores. The plugin marketplace offers over 60,000 plugins and supports direct uploads. These tools expand flexibility, but they sit well above the entry-level price.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and has no expiration date. It includes 1 GB storage, unlimited pages and posts, and basic stats for 7 days. It is a sensible starting point for a small site, but the ads and short analytics window make it less suitable when presentation or longer-term measurement matters.

Personal costs 2.75 USD per month, billed every 12 months, and includes 6 GB storage plus unlimited pages, posts, users, and visitors. It is the lowest-cost paid step and removes ads, making it the practical choice for a personal site that needs a cleaner presentation. Premium costs 5.50 USD per month, billed every 12 months, with 13 GB storage and the same listed unlimited quotas; choose it when the added storage justifies the higher recurring commitment.

Business costs 17.50 USD per month, billed every 12 months, and raises storage to 50 GB while adding the email, developer, backup, and restore tools. It fits organizations that need those workflows rather than just more room for publishing. Commerce costs 31.50 USD per month, billed every 12 months, excluding taxes; it also has 50 GB storage and is the plan to consider when ecommerce tools and WooCommerce matter. WordPress VIP is 25000.00 USD per year for an enterprise platform, with a demo offered. Agencies has custom pricing in USD; its displayed localized price is INR 54 per month per site, excluding taxes.

Platforms

WordPress.com is available on Android and iOS through the Jetpack app for mobile site management. Hosting is included, so customers do not need to arrange separate managed WordPress hosting.

Who it's for

It suits readers who want hosted WordPress publishing with room to add memberships, newsletters, payment buttons, or a store. The free and Personal tiers cover modest publishing needs; Business makes more sense for teams needing developer workflows and backups. It is less compelling for a site that needs those advanced tools but cannot justify the higher plans.

Pros and cons

Pros: Hosting, global CDN, security protections, and unmetered bandwidth are included across plans, avoiding separate hosting setup and bandwidth ceilings.
Pros: Unlimited pages, posts, users, and visitors are listed on paid plans, with storage clearly scaling from 6 GB to 50 GB.
Pros: Memberships, newsletters, and PayPal or Stripe payment buttons support creator revenue paths, while Commerce adds ecommerce tools.
Cons: Free sites display ads and provide basic stats for only 7 days; a paid plan is needed for ad-free presentation.
Cons: The 1 GB free allowance and paid storage caps can constrain media-heavy sites, despite unmetered bandwidth.
Cons: Developer tools, real-time backups, and MailPoet Business are reserved for Business and Commerce, substantially increasing the annual commitment.

Alternatives

Choose Drupal if you want free, open-source CMS software and can handle self-hosting and technical setup. GoDaddy Websites + Marketing is another freemium option, with plans including email marketing sends.

HubSpot CMS Hub offers a free plan for up to two users and a paid Starter tier shown at 720.00 USD per month, making its stated entry and upgrade terms distinct from WordPress.com. Tilda offers a free single website and a Personal plan at 15.00 USD per month with full block access and a custom domain. Wix Website Builder is a freemium web option with a free drag-and-drop editor and no-code design features.

Webflow has a free Starter plan for exploring, with a Webflow.io domain and two static pages; its Basic plan is shown at 15.00 USD per month. Elementor is a freemium option available for self-hosted and web use. Joomla is a free, GPL-licensed CMS download for readers who prefer that model.

Verdict

WordPress.com is a strong fit for publishers and organizations that want managed WordPress hosting, dependable publishing tools, and a path from a simple site to memberships or commerce. Its central advantage is the breadth of that progression without separate hosting; its main drawback is that ad-free presentation is paid and the more capable operational tools start at Business pricing. Choose it when hosted WordPress and its growing toolkit matter more than minimizing recurring costs; look elsewhere if your priorities are free self-hosting or avoiding plan upgrades for advanced workflows.
