Overview

Microsoft Copilot combines an AI assistant with Microsoft 365 apps, cloud storage and security tools. It is best suited to people who already work in that ecosystem; the free option is a way to start, while the paid plans differ substantially in AI usage and sharing.

Copilot supports web search, file uploads, image generation and app integrations, and is available on the web, Windows, macOS, iOS and Android. That breadth makes it a flexible assistant, but users choosing a subscription should weigh its AI limits against the included productivity apps and storage rather than treating it as an AI-only purchase.

Key features

Chat, search and files: Web search and file uploads support research and working with documents. Paid plans provide higher, extensive or highest chat usage than the free plan, but none of those descriptions promise unlimited use.
Image and visual assistance: Copilot generates images, with paid plans offering higher or extensive image-creation usage. Paid subscriptions also increase visual AI assistance based on a screen or camera. The tiered access gives frequent users a reason to pay, but the level depends on the plan.
Audio and agents: AI-generated audio is English-only, with usage levels that vary by plan. Premium includes limited agentic AI usage, while Pro offers the highest usage. Copilot also supports AI bot generation.
Microsoft 365 apps and files: Plans include Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, OneDrive, Defender and Teams. Personal plans let subscribers use Copilot in select apps with work files securely. This bundle is most compelling for people who will use those apps, not someone seeking only chat access.

Pricing

Copilot has a free plan and paid Microsoft 365 subscriptions billed annually, except for Pro, which is monthly. Paid-plan AI features are for the subscription owner only, even where other people can share the subscription's apps and storage. Usage limits apply.

Free — free: Limited access subject to capacity and usage limits. It suits occasional users willing to accept constrained availability, but is a weaker fit for regular AI use.
Microsoft 365 Personal — 99.99 USD per year: Includes one person, 1 TB of secure cloud storage and sign-in on five devices at once, as well as the included apps. A one-month free trial is offered; the subscription automatically renews unless canceled in the Microsoft account. This is the straightforward choice for one person who wants the Microsoft 365 bundle and higher Copilot usage than free.
Microsoft 365 Family — 129.99 USD per year: Supports 1 to 6 people, with up to 6 TB of storage at 1 TB per person and five devices per person. It offers a free trial and automatically renews unless canceled in the Microsoft account. The extra storage and sharing suit households, but Copilot AI remains limited to the subscription owner.
Microsoft 365 Premium — 199.99 USD per year: Covers up to 6 people and up to 6 TB of storage, with extensive Copilot usage and Premium-exclusive Copilot features. A one-month free trial is offered; renewal is automatic unless canceled. Its higher AI allowance is for the owner, so the price is harder to justify if other household members chiefly want AI access.
Microsoft 365 Pro — 99.99 USD per month: Supports up to 6 people and up to 6 TB of storage, with the highest Copilot usage. It is monthly-billed only and has no annual-billing option; the AI access is still limited to the subscription owner. This is aimed at users who need the highest stated usage, but its monthly price is a substantial commitment.

Personal works on PCs, Macs, phones and tablets. Across paid plans, five-device sign-in is stated for Personal and five devices per person for Family; the other plan descriptions do not establish device limits.

Platforms

Copilot is available on web, Windows, macOS, iOS and Android, covering common desktop and mobile choices. Microsoft 365 Personal supports PCs, Macs, phones and tablets, so it can serve someone moving among those devices rather than tied to one workstation.

Who it's for

Copilot is a strong fit for Microsoft 365 users who want AI alongside familiar office apps, storage and security tools. Personal suits a single subscriber; Family makes more sense when shared apps and per-person storage matter; Premium or Pro are for the owner who needs more extensive or highest AI usage. It is less suitable for a household expecting every person on a shared plan to receive AI access, or for someone who wants an AI assistant without paying for a wider software bundle.

Pros and cons

Pro: The subscription bundles Copilot with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, OneDrive, Defender and Teams, useful for people already relying on Microsoft software.
Pro: Web, desktop and mobile availability, plus Personal support for five simultaneous device sign-ins, offers flexibility across devices.
Pro: Family and Premium combine sharing for up to six people with up to 6 TB of storage, making them relevant beyond a single-user app purchase.
Con: On shared subscriptions, AI is for the owner only, limiting the value for other household members who want Copilot.
Con: Free access is capacity- and usage-limited, and paid AI usage remains tiered rather than described as unlimited.
Con: Pro costs 99.99 USD per month and is monthly-only, making its highest usage a costly choice for anyone who does not need that level.

Alternatives

For a broader selection, compare AI Personal Assistants or AI chatbots and assistants. Builders and platform-focused buyers can browse AI Agent Builders, AI Agent Platforms and Chatbot Builders.

Choose Houston instead if a free, Linux-capable automation workspace with more than 1,000 integrations and support for up to three people suits the job. Automation Anywhere Document Automation is a more focused option for eligible small businesses needing document automation, with its free edition covering up to five machines and 100 pages per month.

Relevance AI may suit a web-based, credit-limited workforce setup: its free plan provides 100 credits per day, 200 actions per month, one workforce and one user. UiPath Test Cloud is another option for teams evaluating testing and self-hosted deployment. Agentforce Vibes, Dust, Falcon Builder and Workato Agent Studio are alternatives for readers comparing agent-building tools.

Verdict

Choose Microsoft Copilot if you want an AI assistant bundled with Microsoft 365 apps and storage, especially as a regular user of those tools. Its broad device support and stepped paid usage are useful, but shared-plan AI access belongs only to the owner, and Pro's 99.99 USD per month is difficult to justify without a need for its highest usage. Look elsewhere if you want every person on a family plan to use the AI or do not need the Microsoft 365 bundle.
