Overview

LUNA is Universal Audio’s digital audio workstation for recording, producing, and mixing music. It is a sensible starting point for musicians who want a capable free DAW, and especially appealing to Apollo owners. Its strongest case is the combination of no-cost recording tools and deeper Apollo integration; the main caveats are a multi-step account setup and plug-in differences when moving sessions to Windows.

Key features

The smart toolkit covers tempo and instrument detection, voice control, stem separation, audio-to-MIDI, lyric transcription, and chord extraction, though some capabilities are reserved for Studio. LUNA Play detects an instrument, sets levels, and suggests presets, making it useful for getting an idea into a session quickly. These tools can speed up early arrangement and capture, but they do not make the entire smart-feature set part of the free tier.

LUNA works with any audio interface, so an Apollo is not required. With Apollo, it adds real-time tracking through UAD plug-ins, Unison preamp technology, and Accelerated Realtime Monitoring—a meaningful advantage for owners of that hardware, not a reason for everyone else to buy it. The DAW hosts VST3 and AU plug-ins and virtual instruments. Studio adds API, Studer, and Ampex console or tape extensions, hardware inserts, and six ARA plug-ins, which makes the upgrade most relevant to producers who specifically need those tools.

Installation and authorization require a free Universal Audio account, UA Connect, iLok License Manager, and a free iLok account. A license can be active in up to three locations at once, and an existing activation can be deauthorized to free a location. That flexibility helps when changing computers, but the separate account and licensing components add setup steps.

Pricing

LUNA Free costs 0.00 USD per free and includes unlimited tracks, smart features, UAD Explore Free plug-ins, and Oxide Tape. It is the best place to start if you need recording and production without a recurring fee; the trade-off is that Studio-only features and its expanded plug-in and extension set are excluded.

LUNA Studio costs 199.00 USD per month and includes 30 UAD plug-ins and instruments, six ARA plug-ins, console and tape extensions, advanced smart features, and hardware inserts. It suits producers who need those specific additions, but the monthly price is a substantial commitment over Free.

UAD Spark Studio costs 149.00 USD per year, billed annually. It includes LUNA Studio, 70 UAD plug-ins, and new plug-ins added regularly, making it the lower-cost annual option for someone seeking the Studio feature set alongside a broader plug-in collection. Its annual billing is the key commitment to weigh against Free’s no-cost access.

Platforms

LUNA runs on macOS Big Sur 11 through Tahoe 26 and 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11, with 600 MB of available system storage required. Sessions can open on either operating system, but AU plug-ins will not load when a session is opened on Windows. Producers who regularly move projects between Mac and Windows should account for that limitation and favor plug-ins supported on both systems.

Universal Audio provides a LUNA Knowledge Base with an online manual and downloadable PDF manual.

Who it's for

LUNA is a strong fit for musicians seeking a free DAW with unlimited tracks, built-in smart tools, and a path to more specialized production features. Apollo users have the clearest hardware-specific reason to choose it. It is less compelling for cross-platform collaborators who depend on AU plug-ins in Windows sessions, or for users who do not need Studio’s extensions and advanced features.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free includes unlimited tracks, smart features, UAD Explore Free plug-ins, and Oxide Tape, giving new users room to work without a subscription.
Pro: Any audio interface works, while Apollo owners get real-time UAD tracking, Unison preamp technology, and Accelerated Realtime Monitoring.
Pro: Studio offers a clear upgrade path for console and tape extensions, hardware inserts, and ARA plug-ins.
Con: Setup requires both Universal Audio and iLok accounts plus their companion software.
Con: AU plug-ins do not load in sessions opened on Windows, complicating workflows that move between operating systems.
Con: Studio costs 199.00 USD per month, so users who need only the free tier’s capabilities have little reason to upgrade.

Alternatives

For a collection of audio plug-ins rather than a full DAW, consider Audio Plugins. Readers comparing workstation software can browse Digital Audio Workstations, while Audio Editing Software is the broader category for editing-focused needs.

Airwindows Consolidated is a free, open-source DAW plug-in for CLAP, VST3, AU, and LV2, and is a better fit if you want plug-ins rather than a complete workstation.
FabFilter Total Bundle is a paid set of 14 plug-ins for macOS and Windows at 1069.00 USD per once; choose it when a dedicated plug-in bundle is the goal.
Guitar Rig offers a free Player edition as a standalone application and plug-in; consider it for that narrower use rather than a complete DAW.
Kilohearts Ultimate costs 399.00 USD per once and includes 10 products and Kilohearts Essentials, making it an option for buyers seeking a paid plug-in suite.
McDSP Everything Pack offers access to current and future plug-ins with two activations on its Native Annual, paid monthly plan at 14.99 USD per month; it suits readers who want that plug-in access model.
sonible smart:bundle costs 249.00 USD per once for six plug-ins, including smart:limit, smart:EQ 4, smart:reverb 2, smart:comp 3, smart:deess, and smart:gate; pick it for that focused collection.
Soundtoys 5 is a 23-plug-in bundle at 599.00 USD per once with two activations; it is an alternative for buyers looking specifically for a plug-in collection.
Buddi is a free budgeting software application.

Verdict

Choose LUNA if you want a free workstation with unlimited tracks and smart capture tools, particularly if you own an Apollo interface and can use its deeper integration. Look elsewhere if your workflow depends on AU plug-ins in Windows sessions or if you need a different kind of software; Studio’s paid tools are worthwhile chiefly when its extensions, inserts, or advanced features match your production needs.
