Overview

PhotoCircle is a private media-sharing service built around invite-only Circles for photos, videos, and documents. It is a strong fit for families and small organizations that want to gather media in shared spaces, with business tiers for more managed access. Its appeal is the mix of private sharing and web-based tools; its family plans impose short video limits.

Key features

Circle invitations can be sent as a shareable link, QR code, or direct in-app invitation. That flexibility helps groups bring in members with different levels of familiarity with the app. Families can organize private albums for events, trips, weddings, and other shared moments. Business users can also share up to 20 photos or videos through a web link, a useful option for sharing a small selection without making recipients employees.

Bulk-upload limits distinguish the family tiers: Friends & Family accepts 40 items at a time, while PhotoCircle+ raises the cap to 200. That larger batch allowance matters when consolidating event media, although neither limit makes the free tier a good fit for large one-time imports. PhotoCircle+ also adds search and a web slideshow. Canva integration appears on the Professionals & Consultants and Business plans, connecting shared media to design and content creation.

For organizational buyers, PhotoCircle says it is SOC 2 Type II certified, aligned with NIST CSF, and supports GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, PIPEDA, and EU AI Act compliance. It hosts on AWS and uses Microsoft PhotoDNA to scan for policy-violating content where legally permitted. These are relevant safeguards for teams handling shared media, though they do not replace an organization’s own review of whether the service meets its requirements.

Pricing

The Friends & Family plan is free and ad-supported. It includes mobile apps, videos up to 1 minute, bulk uploads of up to 40 items, and single-item downloads. Those caps make it suitable for modest family sharing, but longer clips and downloading multiple items at once are reasons to consider a paid tier.

PhotoCircle+ costs $1.29 / month. It removes ads for the purchaser and adds the web app, videos up to 4 minutes, search, web slideshow, and bulk uploads of up to 200 items. The low monthly price suits an individual or family that needs those upgrades, but it is not the organizational tier: business-oriented features such as roles and permissions are on Business.

Professionals & Consultants costs $10 / month and includes mobile and web apps, Canva integration, 30-day deleted-data recovery, and videos up to 4 minutes. Standard media is limited to 3.1 MP photos and 720p video; high-resolution media is an optional upgrade for +$2/month. This plan fits an individual professional or consultant, but the resolution ceiling can make the upgrade necessary for users who need higher-quality files.

Business starts from $15 / seat / month. It adds custom branding and roles and permissions to mobile and web apps, Canva integration, and 30-day recovery. High-resolution media costs an additional +$2/seat/month. Each employee or representative using PhotoCircle needs a paid seat, while customers and other audience members can join as guests. That distinction keeps external sharing separate from staff licensing, but per-seat costs rise with the team.

Enterprise costs $180 / seat / year and includes mobile and web apps, 90-day recovery, API integration, archiving, reporting, SSO enforcement, and training. Its longer recovery window and administration features suit organizations with formal access and retention needs; the per-seat annual commitment is less suited to small groups seeking only shared albums. PhotoCircle offers a 30-day trial. The paid-from price is $1.29/mo.

Platforms

PhotoCircle is available on Android, iOS, and the web. The free Friends & Family plan is limited to mobile apps, while PhotoCircle+ adds web access; the professional and organizational plans include both mobile and web apps.

Who it's for

Families sharing photos from occasions and trips can start with Friends & Family, then move to PhotoCircle+ if they need longer videos, web access, search, or larger upload batches. Professionals and consultants get Canva integration and recovery tools in a dedicated plan. Businesses can use guest access for customers and other audiences while paying for employee and representative seats; larger organizations may value Enterprise’s SSO enforcement, reporting, and API integration.

PhotoCircle is less compelling for people who mainly need long video uploads, high-resolution media without an add-on, or a simple archive rather than private group sharing. The free tier’s one-minute video cap is particularly restrictive for clips longer than a brief moment.

Pros and cons

Flexible invitations: Links, QR codes, and in-app invites give groups several ways to bring members into a Circle.
Clear step-up in family upload capacity: PhotoCircle+ raises bulk uploads from 40 to 200 items and extends the video limit from 1 to 4 minutes.
Business guest access: Customers and other audience members can participate without paid seats, while employees and representatives require them.
Short family video caps: The free plan stops at 1 minute, and even PhotoCircle+ caps videos at 4 minutes.
Resolution can cost extra: Professionals & Consultants limits standard media to 3.1 MP photos and 720p video, with high resolution costing +$2/month; Business has a +$2/seat/month upgrade.
Per-seat pricing affects team budgets: Business and Enterprise costs scale with the number of employees or representatives using the service.

Alternatives

For broader storage-service comparisons, see Photo Storage Services. Choose IDrive instead if a storage plan is the priority: its Basic plan includes 10 GB, and IDrive Mini offers 100 GB for one user at 0.25 USD per month. PhotoStructure is a better fit for people who want portable photo libraries with duplicate grouping, metadata reading, and date recovery; its Lite plan is free.

Piwigo suits users who want a self-hosted gallery with its features, themes, and plugins available on the free plan. For family sharing with unlimited photo and video storage and monthly free prints, consider FamilyAlbum; its free plan also makes short Movies from up to three photos or videos. KinPatch is another family-oriented option, with a free plan covering a range of keepsakes and 1 GB of photo and video storage.

MyAlbum may suit users who prioritize unlimited albums and storage on a free plan, with photos up to 16 megapixels and videos up to 1080p, capped at 5 minutes. Preserve Forever is worth considering for a small encrypted archive: its free Basic plan includes 2 GB and one shared album, with export anytime. Tinybeans offers a family-oriented alternative whose free tier allows 20 photo or video uploads per month, while Tinybeans+ includes unlimited monthly uploads and 200GB storage.

Verdict

PhotoCircle is a good choice for families and teams that want private, organized media sharing with flexible invitations and a clear path from free albums to managed business access. The strongest reason to choose it is that the same Circle-based approach spans personal sharing and organizational plans with guests, roles, and recovery options. Look elsewhere if your priority is long videos, unqualified high-resolution media, or a storage-first archive rather than private group sharing.
