Overview

Weebly has been developed by Weebly, headquartered in San Francisco, United States, with the company founded in 2007. The service uses a freemium model: a free site can go live on a Weebly subdomain, while paid plans add a custom domain and progressively more advanced capabilities. Hosting is included, and SSL security is present on the free tier, so a first site does not require a separate hosting purchase.

This arrangement is convenient for a personal project, community site or early business presence. It is less suitable for a brand that must appear on its own domain from launch, because that requires a paid subscription. Weebly also provides code export, which gives a route to move site code elsewhere, although the builder itself remains a hosted web product.

Key features

The core toolkit covers blogging, contact forms and SEO controls, making Weebly viable for publishing updates, collecting enquiries and managing basic search visibility. Booking tools extend that usefulness to appointment-led services. These features form a broad base for informational and service sites rather than a narrowly focused landing-page product.

Weebly supports full e-commerce, with the Performance tier explicitly adding ecommerce and marketing features. That makes the top plan the relevant choice for a store rather than treating commerce as an incidental add-on. Conversely, there is no AI site builder, so people seeking AI-assisted page creation should look elsewhere. Code export is a useful distinction for owners who want an exit option beyond the hosted editor.

Pricing

Free

Free is free, billed monthly. It includes a hosted Weebly subdomain and SSL security. This is a sensible way to start a basic site or assess the service, but the missing custom-domain support limits its credibility for an established business or professional identity.

Personal

Personal costs 13.00 USD per month, billed annually, and connects a custom domain. It is the entry point for anyone who needs an address they own while requiring more than the free subdomain. The annual billing term matters: the displayed monthly figure is tied to that commitment.

Professional

Professional costs 16.00 USD per month, billed annually, and includes a custom domain plus advanced site features. The modest step above Personal makes it the better fit when a growing site needs those additional capabilities rather than only domain connection.

Performance

Performance costs 29.00 USD per month, billed annually. It includes a custom domain, ecommerce and marketing features, making it the clear Weebly tier for a full online store or a business that needs commerce-related promotion. It is difficult to justify for a site that only publishes information or collects contacts.

Platforms

Weebly runs on the web. Hosting is included, so publishing does not depend on arranging a separate hosting provider.

Who it's for

Choose Weebly for a personal, nonprofit, small-business or service website that benefits from blogging, enquiry forms, SEO controls or bookings in one hosted package. The free tier works for an initial presence when a Weebly subdomain is acceptable; Personal is the practical minimum for a custom domain; Performance is aimed at commerce.

It is a poorer fit for users whose priority is AI-generated site creation, or for anyone unwilling to pay annually to connect a custom domain. For broader category comparisons, see Website builders, Small Business Website Builders and No-Code Website Builders.

Pros and cons

Pros

Hosting and SSL on Free: a basic site can launch without a separate hosting bill.
Broad practical toolkit: blogging, forms, SEO controls and booking tools cover common publishing and service needs.
Full ecommerce option: Performance adds commerce and marketing features for a store.
Code export: owners have an export path if they later need more control.

Cons

Free uses a Weebly subdomain: a custom web address requires payment.
Annual billing on paid tiers: the advertised monthly prices apply when billed annually.
No AI site builder: it is not the right choice for AI-led creation workflows.

Alternatives

GoDaddy Websites + Marketing is worth considering if mobile apps and email-marketing quotas matter. Webador suits readers seeking a lower-cost freemium option with a free tier. Tilda is an alternative for block-based sites with a Personal plan at 15.00 USD per month. Jimdo starts paid website plans from 9.00 USD per month. uCoz is an option where storage and multiple custom domains are priorities. Nicepage supports web, Windows and macOS workflows. Carrot targets location-page and keyword-tracking needs. SimDif offers a free five-page Starter plan. Readers with specific audiences can also compare Nonprofit Website Builders, Dental Website Builders and Personal Website Builders.

Verdict

Weebly is a strong choice for someone who wants hosting, a custom-domain upgrade, publishing tools and full ecommerce in one web service. Pick it when that integrated toolkit matters more than AI creation. Look elsewhere if an AI site builder is essential or if annual billing for a paid domain connection does not fit your plans.
