Overview

MAME documents and reproduces the workings of electronic amusement machines, with support for more than 32,000 individual systems spanning five decades. That scope makes it useful for exploring software history across many kinds of hardware in one project. But support is not a promise of perfect or full-speed emulation: some systems may run slowly even on the fastest computers.

It can save and load states, record inputs for playback, and capture screenshots or video. Those features help users revisit a point in a session, reproduce inputs or document software behavior. MAME generally does not include BIOS dumps or copyrighted software, so users may need to obtain those separately; the project does have permission to redistribute some older software.

Key features

Debugger and scripting

The interactive low-level debugger is useful for diagnosing emulation problems, developing software for vintage systems, creating cheats, ROM hacking and investigating how software behaves. It gives MAME a role beyond game playback, particularly for developers and preservation work. Lua scripts can inspect and manipulate device state, access CPU registers, read and write memory, and draw graphical overlays. The trade-off is that the Lua API is not declared stable and may change without notice, so scripts can require maintenance.

Plugins and network play

Lua plugins can communicate with external programs, display game structures, provide alternate interfaces or test emulation. Included plugins such as Discord Presence and a GDB Stub offer concrete points of integration. Network play is supported for linked-play deathmatch mode in Taito’s Gunbuster, though that example should not be taken as a promise of network support across every system.

Pricing

MAME is free: the MAME plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is distributed under GPL-2.0 or later. The project as a whole uses that license, while its site says more than 90% of files, including core files, are under BSD-3-Clause. There is no free trial because there is no paid plan to trial. The free download does not generally include BIOS dumps or copyrighted software, which can be a practical barrier to getting a particular system running.

Platforms

MAME supports Android, Linux, macOS and Windows. Official Windows x64 and Arm64 packages require Windows 10 or later, 4 GB RAM and a supported x86-64 or Arm CPU. The MAMEDEV wiki provides build instructions for Linux and macOS, so users on those platforms may need to follow platform-specific setup steps. The project warns that MAME is not designed for secure sites, has not been audited for such use, and should not be run as administrator or root.

Who it's for

MAME is a strong fit for people interested in preserving or studying older software, as well as developers and ROM hackers who need low-level inspection tools. Players who want one framework spanning arcade games and many other historical systems may also value its range. It is a weaker fit for someone expecting a curated library, dependable fidelity on every system, or a ready-to-run setup without separately sourced BIOS and software.

Pros and cons

Pros: Support across more than 32,000 systems makes MAME unusually broad for cross-era exploration.
Pros: Debugging, Lua scripting, save states, input recording and capture tools serve investigation as well as play.
Pros: It is free, supports four operating-system families, and includes plugins such as Discord Presence and a GDB Stub.
Cons: BIOS dumps and most copyrighted software are generally not bundled, so users must source necessary files separately.
Cons: Emulation quality and speed vary by system, limiting its usefulness when consistent playback is the priority.
Cons: The Lua API can change without notice, adding maintenance risk for scripts and integrations.

Alternatives

RetroArch is another free, open-source option for users who want coverage across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web and Windows. For Android users who want on-screen buttons and gamepad mapping in a freemium app, ClassicBoy Pro offers a free version with those controls.

Manic EMU is an iOS and macOS alternative with free and sideload options, including differing playback, save-state and cheat limits. Provenance is worth considering for iOS and macOS users who want a free option when sideloaded or built from source, with its emulation features included.

webЯcade is a free, open-source choice for users seeking support across web, mobile and desktop platforms. higan is free software for Linux, macOS and Windows. ROCKNIX is a community-developed, as-is option for Linux and self-hosted use, while ares is a free, open-source multi-system emulator for Linux, macOS and Windows.

For readers narrowing their search by system, browse TurboGrafx-16 Emulators, Sega CD Emulators, Sega Genesis Emulators, Dreamcast Emulators, Multi-System Emulators and Game Gear Emulators.

Verdict

Choose MAME if you want a free, exceptionally broad framework for preserving, exploring or debugging vintage systems. Its strongest reason to choose it is the combination of extensive hardware coverage and tools for inspecting software; the main reasons to look elsewhere are uneven emulation and the need to source BIOS and copyrighted software yourself.
