Overview

MarketplaceKit is software for building marketplaces for products, rentals, bookings, and seller-contact listings. It suits startups, shops, and communities that need flexible listing and revenue models. Its broad feature set is balanced by a choice between a self-hosted edition without customer support and hosted plans capped by traffic and storage.

Owners can charge commissions, listing fees, or membership fees, and the platform supports automated payouts, seller onboarding, and multiple currencies. It also handles products with variants and bookings by date, night, or time slot, making it a fit beyond standard online stores.

Key features

Customization spans custom HTML, CSS, and snippets, alongside a homepage page builder. Direct messaging, listing moderation, and member approval provide useful controls for curated marketplaces: owners can require approval before members post or browse. These capabilities help with community-led models, though they do not remove the customer’s role in configuring and protecting a self-hosted installation.

Listings can include images, video, and PDFs; uploads receive generated thumbnails, and the media gallery offers AI-powered cropping. The add-ons page lists Stripe, MailChimp, Paystack, InstaMojo, and offline payments. Stripe processes card and ACH payments, and the service supports payments in more than 130 countries.

The site is responsive on phones and tablets. An API can be used to build native iOS and Android apps, so mobile apps are possible, but are a separate build rather than an included native app. The platform is available for web and self-hosting as well as through its API.

Pricing

The Community Edition is free. It is self-hosted, a lighter version than the hosted product, and has no customer support. That makes it a low-cost starting point for teams able to manage their own infrastructure and support needs.

Hobby costs 15.00 USD per month and includes 2,500 listings, 10k unique visitors/month, 10GB storage, and unlimited members. Weekday email support is included. It is the entry hosted tier, but the listing and traffic caps may constrain a growing marketplace.

Plus costs 30.00 USD per month, with unlimited listings, 20k unique visitors/month, 20GB storage, and unlimited members. It also includes weekday email support. The doubled traffic and storage allowance over Hobby makes it a more suitable step for a busier marketplace, though visitor and storage limits remain.

Pro costs 60.00 USD per month and provides unlimited listings, 50k+ unique visitors/month, 50GB storage, and unlimited members. It includes email and technical support, making it the strongest hosted option for larger operations that need more assistance as well as headroom. Hosted customers receive daily database backups downloadable from the browser.

The customer agreement commits to reasonable and appropriate measures to protect customer data, while assigning part of the responsibility for data security, configuration, and backups to the customer. Hosted backups are a practical safeguard, but operators should still account for their own responsibilities.

Platforms

MarketplaceKit supports web, API, self-hosted, Android, and iOS. Its responsive site works on phones and tablets, while native apps can be built using the API. The platform’s flexibility is useful for teams planning a custom mobile experience, but the API route requires that app-building work.

Who it's for

MarketplaceKit is best suited to startups, shops, and communities building marketplaces that need several transaction formats, revenue options, or member controls. It is less appropriate for teams that require customer support on a free plan, want a native app without building one, or expect hosted traffic and storage to exceed plan limits without moving up a tier.

Pros and cons

Pros: Supports products, rentals, bookings, and seller-contact listings, with commissions, listing fees, and memberships as revenue options.
Pros: Member approval, moderation, and direct messaging give marketplace owners meaningful controls over participation and communication.
Pros: Hosted tiers include daily downloadable database backups, and paid plans include support that scales from weekday email to technical support.
Cons: The free Community Edition is self-hosted, lighter than hosted, and has no customer support, so it is not a supported turnkey option.
Cons: Hosted Hobby and Plus plans cap monthly visitors and storage; operators with heavier use must move to Pro or manage within those limits.
Cons: Security, configuration, and backups remain partly the customer's responsibility, particularly relevant to self-hosters.

Alternatives

Litekart is worth considering if you want a free self-hosted platform with full source code and all features included, rather than MarketplaceKit’s lighter Community Edition.

Marketbridge by Hykmah may suit a smaller API- or web-based operation that can work within its Free plan’s one product, 100 records, 100 transactions/month, and 1 GB storage; its Professional plan is 50.00 AUD per month.

Dokan Multivendor Marketplace is an alternative for teams using self-hosted WordPress, with a free Lite plan and a paid Starter annual plan at 149.00 USD per year.

Websta is another freemium option for Android, iOS, and web.

FlyCommerce is a paid web option with a free trial.

Sharetribe is a paid alternative with a free trial and a Build plan at 39.00 USD per month.

Tamaranga is a paid alternative with a free trial.

Kreezalid is a paid web and API alternative with a free trial and a Basic plan at 99.00 EUR per month.

Verdict

Choose MarketplaceKit if you are building a marketplace that needs varied listing formats, flexible monetization, and control over member participation, with hosted tiers available as traffic grows. Its strongest case is breadth across marketplace operations; look elsewhere if you need customer support without paying, want uncapped hosted capacity at a lower tier, or expect a ready-made native mobile app.
