Overview

Math-U-See is a hybrid math curriculum for homeschool families, schools, tutors, and small learning groups that want instruction to follow a student’s understanding rather than a grade schedule.

The curriculum runs from introductory math through calculus across 13 levels. Students can progress at their own pace, concentrating on fundamental concepts before moving on. An individual placement questionnaire combines yes-or-no questions with example problems to help families choose a starting level. Lesson plans, assessments, and parent guidance are included, and the curriculum covers two subjects.

Math-U-See is used in homeschools, public and private schools, independent study programs, tutoring, and co-ops or support groups. Demme Learning is an independent, family-owned publisher based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, serving homeschoolers and small-group learning environments since 1990. The curriculum is also used by more than 300 public school districts, often in special education, resource, intervention, and Title 1 settings.

Key features

Model, write, explain

Build, Write, Say asks students to represent a problem with manipulatives, write a solution, and explain why the concept works. That makes reasoning part of the lesson rather than treating a correct answer as the only goal. It suits students who benefit from concrete steps and explanation, but may not suit families looking for instruction centered primarily on screens.

Self-paced levels and placement

Thirteen levels span introductory math through calculus without a grade-based progression. That flexibility is useful when a student needs more time on a concept or is ready to move ahead, though families who want a standard grade sequence may prefer another curriculum. The placement questionnaire offers a practical starting point using sample problems as well as yes-or-no responses.

Print and digital resources

The hybrid approach combines textbooks and manipulatives with lesson videos and online resources. The Digital Toolbox includes the first three lessons of each level, virtual manipulatives, and other online content. The digital manipulatives cover number sense through Algebra 1 and include a notepad and backgrounds such as graphing and number lines. Essential, Expanded, and Premium subscriptions provide browser access to instructional videos, an online Instruction Manual, and lesson solutions on phones, laptops, tablets, and other browser-equipped devices. Offline access is also supported.

The separate Math-U-See Digital Manipulatives app is designed only for tablet use. That restriction matters if the app is central to a family’s setup: check compatibility before buying rather than assuming a phone or laptop will work.

Pricing

The free account is free and provides freemium content and samples of all program levels. It is a useful way to explore the curriculum, but it is not one of the paid subscription tiers.

Monthly subscriptions include five student accounts. Individual Essential Plan — Monthly costs 6.95 USD per month and includes two course credits, making it the entry paid tier for a family with limited course needs. Individual Expanded Plan — Monthly costs 19.95 USD per month and includes 10 course credits, a better fit for families using more courses. Individual Premium Plan — Monthly costs 29.95 USD per month and includes unlimited course credits, so it suits families who need the greatest course flexibility. On Essential and Expanded, each additional student account or course credit costs $5/month; Premium lists additional student accounts at $5/month.

Annual billing lowers the listed subscription price while keeping the same five student accounts and credit allowances. Individual Essential Plan — Annual costs 70.00 USD per year and includes two course credits; Individual Expanded Plan — Annual costs 199.95 USD per year and includes 10; Individual Premium Plan — Annual costs 295.95 USD per year and includes unlimited credits. Additional student accounts and course credits on the annual Essential and Expanded plans cost $50/year; Premium lists additional student accounts at $50/year. Choose a lower credit tier only if its cap matches your course needs; Premium removes the credit limit, not the five-account limit.

A free trial is available for 14 days. The curriculum’s broader materials include textbooks and manipulatives, while the paid digital subscriptions provide streaming videos and browser-based instructional resources.

Platforms

Math-U-See is available on Android, iOS, and the web. Browser-based subscription resources can be opened on a phone, laptop, tablet, or other browser-equipped device. The Digital Manipulatives app is tablet-only, so app compatibility is a separate consideration from the broader browser access.

Who it's for

Math-U-See is a strong fit for families and educators who want a student to work at an individual pace and demonstrate understanding through models, written solutions, and explanation. Its levels and use across homeschool, school, tutoring, and co-op settings give it scope beyond a single grade-specific course. Families who require an app that works across phone and laptop, or a grade-based progression, should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: Thirteen self-paced levels from introductory math through calculus let students spend time where they need it rather than follow a fixed grade sequence.
Pros: Lesson plans, assessments, parent guidance, textbooks, and digital resources support both home instruction and group settings.
Cons: The Digital Manipulatives app is tablet-only, limiting its usefulness for households relying on phones or laptops for app access.
Cons: The paid monthly tiers cap student accounts at five, with additional accounts billed separately; Essential and Expanded also cap course credits.
Cons: The curriculum is not grade-based, so families wanting a conventional grade-level path may find its flexible levels a mismatch.

Verdict

Math-U-See is best for families and educators who value concept mastery and want students to model, write, and explain their way through math at an individual pace. Its combination of physical and digital resources and broad level range gives that method room to grow with a learner. Look elsewhere if a grade-based sequence or a manipulatives app that works beyond tablets is essential.
