Overview

Mathspace brings together interactive textbooks, video lessons, practice questions, adaptive tasks and diagnostic skills check-ins. StepSmart gives students immediate, context-sensitive help as they work through each step, which can make practice more instructive when a student gets stuck than feedback delivered only after an answer. Adaptive tasks and diagnostics give students another route into practice, while guided lessons and gamified exercises offer different ways to engage with mathematics.

Teachers can create or assign tasks, use automatic marking and review reports at both class and individual-work-step level. That makes Mathspace relevant to classroom instruction as well as independent study. The balance is strongest where teachers want visibility into how students work, not just whether they reached a correct answer.

Key features

Stepwise feedback: StepSmart supports students at each stage of a problem. This is useful for learners who need help while working, rather than only a final result.
Adaptive practice and diagnostics: Tasks can adapt to student skills, and diagnostic check-ins can identify areas for practice. These tools give students a structured way to work through mathematics content.
Teaching and reporting: Teachers can assign work, have it marked automatically and inspect class insights or an individual student's steps. This supports tracking and follow-up without relying only on scores.
School integrations: Mathspace lists Canvas, Clever and SchoolsPLP integrations. Canvas users should note that the school administrator handles class management; teachers also lose some controls, including the option to add a parent email.

Pricing

Mathspace uses a freemium model. Personal is free and allows one class of up to 30 students. That is a practical starting point for an individual teacher or a small group, but the single-class and enrollment caps limit its use across a larger program.

Classes costs 8.00 USD per year, billed per student per year, and includes unlimited classes and students. It fits teachers or programs that have outgrown the free account. Schools costs 15.00 USD per year, also billed per student per year, with unlimited classes and students; it is the higher-priced school option for organizations choosing a school plan. Schools Plus also includes unlimited classes and students, with custom pricing.

Eligible schools can try Classes or Schools Plus for 30 days without commitment. Mathspace also offers a free trial; the school trial terms make the relevant duration and eligibility clear for those two plans.

Platforms

Mathspace runs on the web and iOS. The student app is recommended for iPad, while the web app is recommended for teachers using a desktop or laptop and for students who cannot use the iOS app. Offline access is not available, so students need a connection to use it.

Who it's for

Mathspace is a strong fit for teachers who want to assign mathematics practice, automate marking and see student progress down to individual working steps. It also suits students who benefit from adaptive tasks and in-problem guidance, and parents can use its reporting features. The free account is better suited to a single class than to school-wide use; schools should compare the per-student plans and account for the reduced teacher controls when using Canvas.

Pros and cons

Pro: StepSmart provides help during each step, supporting students before they abandon a difficult problem.
Pro: Adaptive tasks, diagnostic check-ins and multiple content formats give students several ways to practice and revisit mathematics.
Pro: Automatic marking and reports covering both class patterns and individual work give teachers useful follow-up detail.
Con: The free plan is limited to one class and 30 students, so a larger teaching load requires a paid plan.
Con: Canvas class management sits with the school administrator, and some teacher controls, including adding a parent email, are unavailable.
Con: There is no offline access, and the student app is recommended for iPads, narrowing the most direct app-based option.

Alternatives

For other options, browse Maths learning apps. Choose GeoGebra if broad platform support or source code licensed under EUPL 1.2 is central to your choice; its installers and web services are limited to non-commercial use. Monster Math is another freemium option, with a Premium plan at 59.99 USD per year for unlimited app access and all features, levels and content without ads.

MobyMax offers a free educator version with limited access compared with licensed features, plus a Family plan at 7.99 USD per month. MathScore provides free topics across K–8 grade levels and has a first paid student plan at 9.95 USD per month for full topic access. Brilliant limits its free plan to two lessons or practice sets per day.

Mathigon is free for students, teachers and parents. SplashLearn offers a family subscription at 7.49 USD per month, billed annually, with a Preschool-to-Grade-5 curriculum library and premium live classes. Freckle Math offers unlimited self-paced student practice on its free plan, with a limited number of teacher assignments.

Verdict

Mathspace is a good choice for students who need guidance through problem solving and for teachers who want assignments, automatic marking and reports on student work. Stepwise support is its clearest reason to choose it. Look elsewhere if offline study is essential, a free account must cover multiple classes, or Canvas teachers need full control over class management and parent contact details.
