Overview

PhotoStructure combines drive scanning, a browsable library, and metadata management across desktop and server deployments. Its approach is especially useful when an archive spans many folders and file variants: related copies and edits appear as one library entry, while the underlying metadata can remain readable by other photo applications.

The product keeps photo and video libraries on the user’s own hardware. The privacy policy says the app does not upload those libraries, though optional error reports can include system information, file paths, logs, and error details. Those reports and several other privacy controls can be disabled.

Key features

PhotoStructure scans drives, organizes photos into a folder structure users choose, and watches for new arrivals. It groups duplicates, edited and resized copies, and related burst photos into a single library entry, reducing clutter when browsing an archive with many versions of the same image.

Browsing draws random samples from across the library and offers facets for dates, locations, camera details, folders, and people tags. Support for several hundred photo and video formats and pre-rendered web previews make large collections easier to explore in a browser. The maker says libraries with millions of files have been tested, and the library database is backed up automatically.

Tags, captions, corrected dates, and locations can be saved to files or XMP sidecars in standards other photo apps can read. PhotoStructure can import metadata from Apple Photos libraries; its guide also covers metadata sidecars and Google Takeout JSON files. Plus can read existing face tags, but the described features do not establish a particular face-search workflow.

Pricing

Lite is free and includes portable libraries, duplicate and edited-copy grouping, metadata reading and date recovery, random samples, and automatic drive scans. It is a capable starting point for people who want to browse and consolidate a collection without paying, but it omits Plus-only automatic organization and tagging for new imports.

Plus costs 5.00 USD per month, billed $5/month, for one household. It adds support for many photo and video formats, browser video previews, keyword tagging, Apple Photos metadata import, corruption checks, automatic organization, reading existing face tags, archive, exclude, and delete controls, and forum and email customer support. A 15-day trial gives prospective subscribers a chance to evaluate the paid edition.

If Plus expires, Lite can still open any PhotoStructure library, but new imports no longer receive Plus-only automatic organization or tagging. That makes the subscription relevant to ongoing intake and management rather than access to an existing library.

Platforms

Desktop installers are available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Server editions run through Docker or Node.js on a home server, NAS, or VPS, and the web interface supports browsing. This flexibility suits people who want to choose where the collection lives; it does mean the server route depends on hardware and setup they manage themselves.

Who it's for

PhotoStructure is best for individuals and households who want a unified photo and video archive on their own equipment, especially when they have several drives, many file variants, or a large existing collection. Lite suits people who mainly need scanning and browsing. Plus makes more sense for households that want automatic organization and tagging during ongoing imports, along with corruption checks and customer support.

It is a less natural choice for anyone who wants a hosted storage service to take responsibility for keeping the library online: PhotoStructure is designed around hardware the user controls.

Pros and cons

Flexible deployment: Desktop apps and Docker or Node.js server editions let users choose between a personal computer, NAS, home server, or VPS.
Useful archive cleanup: Grouping duplicates, edits, resized versions, and burst photos keeps related files together in the browsing experience.
Metadata portability: Saving metadata in files or XMP sidecars makes tags, captions, dates, and locations usable by other compatible photo apps.
Free edition has practical limits: Lite scans and browses libraries, but automatic organization and tagging for new imports require Plus.
Privacy involves optional reporting: Libraries are not uploaded, but enabled error reports may include paths, logs, system information, and error details.

Alternatives

Piwigo is another freemium, self-hosted option, with a free plan described as including all features, themes, and plugins. Ente Photos is available across mobile, desktop, and web platforms, and its free plan includes 10 GB, one replica, and 100 Locker items. jAlbum may suit people who want to publish albums to their own site; its free plan allows up to 24 objects.

PhotoPrism offers a free self-hosted Community plan with unlimited storage and instances, open-source licensing, and community support. Lomorage is free software for people who want to use external storage without rate or account-number limits. Amazon Photos offers 5 GB of shared photo and video storage on its free plan, while its Amazon Prime benefit includes unlimited full-resolution photo storage.

Flickr suits people who want public sharing: its free plan allows 1,000 public photo and video uploads and includes ads. Google Photos is another freemium photo library option. For a broader comparison, see Photo Management Software and Photo Storage Services.

Verdict

Choose PhotoStructure if you want a flexible desktop or server based organizer for a collection that stays on hardware you control. Its best case is a large, messy archive that benefits from duplicate grouping, portable metadata, and automatic database backups. Look elsewhere if you want hosted storage to manage the library for you, or if you need automatic organization and tagging for new imports without a Plus subscription.
