Overview

MES AI splits configuration from production execution. Its design-time browser client handles products, routes, dispositions, equipment, plugins, and master data, while the runtime supports work-in-process (WIP) processing, dispatching, inventory activity, shop-floor execution, and hold or disposition handling. Separate ERP and equipment simulators and a WIP client broaden the toolkit without making the framework a fixed, preconfigured workflow package.

Work order management, quality management, lot and serial traceability, shop-floor data capture, real-time dashboards, and ERP integration are among its stated capabilities. The ERP simulator can exercise inbound planning, order release, and outbound reporting without a live ERP connection, giving teams a way to work through those flows before connecting an ERP system.

Key features

Plugins can add REST endpoints, event handlers, equipment behavior, dispatch strategies, and integration logic. This is a meaningful advantage for plants whose processes do not fit standard assumptions, but it also makes the framework a better match for teams able to define and maintain their own extensions.

A versioned REST API and WebSocket event stream support integrations and near-real-time updates. PostgreSQL is the default database, with SQL Server and Oracle also supported. Optional integration dependencies cover OPC UA, MQTT, SAP, SQL Server, Oracle, Modbus, Redis, STOMP, and AVEVA historian integration work; the breadth is useful, though connecting systems will still require implementation suited to each operation.

Authentication and role-based access control apply across API and UI-backed workflows. The project describes server-side unit tests and end-to-end SQA coverage for key design-time and runtime workflows. Test drives of the MES applications require no authentication, so readers can explore the browser applications before committing to deployment.

Pricing

MES AI: Free. The plan is a free and open-source MES framework, making it a practical option for teams that want to avoid a software licence charge while shaping their own workflows. The price does not remove the work of adapting, integrating, and running the system.

Platforms

MES AI runs on Linux, macOS, or Windows, with a FastAPI server and separate Vite client applications. Its browser-based applications suit teams that want web access to design-time, runtime, simulation, and WIP workflows while hosting the system themselves.

Who it's for

MES AI is best for manufacturers with technical capacity to configure MES workflows, build integrations, and operate a self-hosted system. The design-time tools and plugin points give those teams room to fit the framework to plant-specific processes. Organizations that need a turnkey implementation or do not want to own that adaptation should consider a more packaged alternative.

Pros and cons

Pro: Free, open-source licensing lowers the software cost barrier for teams building a tailored MES.
Pro: Separate design-time, runtime, simulator, and WIP clients cover both configuration and operational workflows.
Pro: Plugins, API access, and event streaming provide several routes for extending workflows and connecting systems.
Con: The framework is intended for adaptation, so teams must take responsibility for fitting workflows and integrations to their operations.
Con: Self-hosting across supported operating systems means deployment and ongoing operation remain with the organization.

Alternatives

Manufacturing Execution Systems is the broader category directory for comparing MES options.

OpenMES is another free option, with a Community plan described as a full MES experience for single-site operations; consider it if that scope matches your needs. Its Enterprise plan adds advanced modules and dedicated SLA support.

qcadoo MES may suit teams seeking a different open-source MES, though its BASIC plan is paid at 195.00 EUR per year for five licenses, billed annually.

NETVIBES is a paid alternative with a free plan and free trial; choose it if its platform better fits your requirements.

Sepasoft MES is a paid alternative with a free trial and support priced at 16.00 USD per year, billed at 16% annually of software retail price; consider it if you prefer a paid option with that support plan.

Statii is a paid alternative with a free trial and a Shop floor user plan at 8.50 GBP per month, billed month-to-month with cancellation at a month’s notice.

Honeywell Enterprise Browser, Leading2Lean Smart Manufacturing Platform, and FactoryLogix are other alternatives to compare.

Verdict

Choose MES AI if your manufacturing team wants a free framework it can shape around its own workflows and has the technical capacity to host and extend it. Its strongest reason to choose is the combination of execution clients and broad plugin and integration points without a licence fee. Look elsewhere if you need a ready-to-run MES and do not want to own the adaptation and deployment work.
