Overview

PayWhirl is subscription billing software for merchants selling memberships, payment plans, and other repeat-payment offers. It is a strong fit for businesses that need several billing models and flexible ways to connect billing to a storefront or custom site. The chief trade-off is that PayWhirl’s transaction fees are added to gateway or processor charges.

It handles recurring plans, installments, retainers, pre-orders, donations, manual subscriptions, and one-time payments. Automated charges, invoices, emails, retries, and dunning can reduce routine payment follow-up. Subscribers can manage payment methods, billing details, and subscription changes in a self-service portal, subject to the merchant’s settings.

Reporting spans MRR and ARR, customer lifetime value, churn, payment calendars, geographic reporting, and growth forecasting. Merchants can connect through widgets, hosted payment links, API access, webhooks, or custom scripts. PayWhirl supports more than 10 gateways and major credit and debit cards in over 100 currencies, depending on gateway capabilities.

Key features

The breadth of billing options is useful for merchants combining subscriptions with installments, retainers, donations, or one-off sales. Automated retries and dunning address failed-payment follow-up, while the customer portal gives subscribers some control without requiring direct merchant assistance for every change. Its reporting is relevant to operators tracking recurring revenue, churn, and customer value, though the portal’s available actions remain under merchant control.

Integration choices suit both standard storefronts and custom implementations. PayWhirl lists Shopify, BigCommerce, Squarespace, Wix, Stripe, Square, PayPal, Authorize.Net, Braintree, ShipStation, Mailchimp, Google Analytics, and Zapier. It also says full card numbers and verification codes are intended to pass directly to payment providers rather than through PayWhirl’s servers, and that it maintains PCI-related controls appropriate to its role and system scope. Its data protection addendum says it processes merchant subscriber data and does not sell it or use it for unrelated advertising or profiling.

Pricing

PayWhirl has a free plan and paid plans from $9/mo. Paid plans include a 14-day free trial with the full application. The fees below are PayWhirl’s transaction fees; gateway or processor charges still apply.

Plan	Price	PayWhirl transaction fee
Starter	$0 /mo	3.0%
Free	$0 /mo	3%
Pro	$9 /mo	2%
Traction	$29 /mo	1.5%
Business Pro	$49 /mo	2.0%
Business Plus	$149 /mo	1.0%
Scale	$149 /mo	0.75%
Business Ultimate	$249 /mo	0.5%
Enterprise	Custom pricing	Volume discounts

The free options avoid a monthly subscription but carry 3% transaction fees, so they suit merchants prioritizing no monthly commitment over lower per-transaction costs. Pro lowers that fee to 2% for $9/mo; Traction charges $29/mo at 1.5%. The $49 Business Pro plan has a 2.0% fee, so it is not a straightforward fee reduction over Pro. Business Plus and Scale both cost $149/mo, with Scale carrying the lower transaction fee at 0.75% versus 1.0%. Business Ultimate costs $249/mo and charges 0.5%. Enterprise uses custom pricing and is intended for businesses processing more than $5,000,000 per year. Shopify-app plans still carry standard payment processor fees; gateway fees apply to the other plans as well.

Platforms

PayWhirl is available on web and through API access. It is described for merchants using BigCommerce, custom websites, and a separate Shopify application. The range of embeds, links, webhooks, and scripts gives technical teams several integration routes, while human help is offered for setup, gateway configuration, subscriber imports, and launch details.

Who it's for

PayWhirl suits merchants that need recurring billing alongside one-time sales or varied payment formats, and that value reporting, payment recovery, and a subscriber portal. Its support for custom billing intervals, prepaid plans, pause or skip options, and both product types gives subscription operators room to shape offers. It is less compelling for a merchant whose priority is minimizing total payment costs: PayWhirl’s transaction charge comes in addition to the gateway or processor fee, and its free plans charge 3% per transaction.

Pros and cons

Pros: Supports subscriptions, installments, retainers, pre-orders, donations, manual subscriptions, and one-time payments, making it suitable for mixed billing models.
Pros: Automates invoices, emails, retries, and dunning, and offers payment recovery tools for recurring billing.
Pros: Offers portal, reporting, and multiple integration methods, with human setup and launch help.
Cons: PayWhirl transaction fees stack with payment gateway or processor charges, including on free plans.
Cons: Free plans charge 3% per transaction, while the $49 Business Pro plan’s 2.0% fee is higher than Traction’s 1.5% despite its higher monthly price.
Cons: Subscriber self-service is limited by merchant settings, so the portal does not guarantee customers can make every desired change themselves.

Alternatives

Subscription Ecommerce Software and Subscription Billing Software are useful starting points for comparing products by category.

Seal Subscriptions is worth considering if its $5.95 monthly SUPERSALE plan, 0% transaction fee, 100-subscription limit, and 30-day trial better match a small subscription operation.

Appstle Subscriptions may suit merchants who value a free plan capped at $500 in monthly subscriptions, with pay-as-you-go and prepaid subscriptions and 24/7 human support.

Loop Subscriptions offers a free plan capped at 50 active subscriptions, with a mobile-friendly portal, subscription alerts, and growth and revenue analytics; consider it if those limits and tools fit.

Recurpay offers development stores a free option with no transaction fee, subscription analytics, a customer portal, and automatic payment recovery.

Subi Subscriptions is another freemium option with free development-store use and no transaction fees.

PayKickstart may be a fit for buyers seeking a platform with no platform transaction fees and a 14-day trial; its plan is paid and has no free plan.

Shopify is a paid web platform alternative with plans that include 10 inventory locations; its Grow plan is described for small teams and supports up to five staff accounts.

Awtomic is a paid alternative with a Professional yearly plan priced at $2491.00 per year and a one-year minimum contract.

Verdict

PayWhirl is a good choice for merchants who need flexible recurring billing, payment recovery, reporting, and multiple storefront or custom-site integration paths. Its broad billing formats and portal make it more adaptable than a narrow recurring-charge tool. Look elsewhere if transaction costs are the deciding factor: its fees are layered on top of gateway or processor charges, and free plans carry a 3% PayWhirl fee.
