Overview

Moodis is an image-focused mood-board tool for artists who want to collect and arrange creative references. It suits solo users who value offline desktop work and groups that need shared boards. Its central trade-off is that commercial use requires a paid plan, while the product remains in beta.

Key features

An infinite canvas supports panning, zooming and free image placement, with optional grid snapping for more orderly layouts. Users can resize, rotate and layer images, and keyboard shortcuts help manage composition. Unlimited boards make it practical to separate projects, and exporting to PNG or JPEG gives users a straightforward way to share a finished board.

The desktop app works offline and stores boards and images on the user’s machine; cloud sync is optional. That makes Moodis a good fit for people who want local reference work, but those who need web access or shareable board links must choose Pro. Team adds real-time collaborative editing and guest access, so it is the plan for group work rather than simply a larger solo workspace.

For cloud accounts, images are encrypted at rest and stored in the European Union, and account passwords are hashed by the authentication provider. The maker says it does not sell user data or share it with advertisers or data brokers. Named service providers include Supabase, Wasabi, Bunny CDN, Vercel, Plausible Analytics, Lemon Squeezy, Resend, Sentry and Google Fonts. Users can contact support at support@moodis.app.

Pricing

Moodis uses a freemium model, with paid plans from €5/mo and a 14-day trial. Free costs €0/forever and includes local mood boards and unlimited boards, but it is restricted to personal, non-commercial use. Client work, freelancing and other commercial projects require Pro or Team, which makes the free plan unsuitable as a permanent tool for paid creative work.

Pro costs €5/mo and includes 99 GB of cloud storage, cloud sync and sharing. It is the practical step up for a solo user who needs web access or to share boards, though it does not include Team’s collaborative editing. Team costs €50/mo, includes three users and 999 GB of cloud storage, and charges €10/user/mo for each additional user. That higher price makes sense for groups that need collaboration and substantial shared storage, not for a solo user who only needs cloud sync.

Moodis is currently in beta, and the maker cautions that features may change and results are not guaranteed. That uncertainty is worth weighing before relying on it for a commercial workflow, even when a paid plan removes the free plan’s commercial-use restriction.

Platforms

Moodis is available for Windows, Linux and the web. Desktop downloads support Windows 10 or later and Linux x86_64; the maker says macOS is coming soon. Linux users get an x86_64 AppImage, but no .deb, .rpm, Flatpak, Snap or Arch package, and no ARM/aarch64 build. That makes the platform a less convenient fit for Linux users who depend on native package formats or ARM hardware.

Who it's for

Moodis is best for artists who want a flexible canvas, separate boards for different projects and the option to keep references local and offline. Pro suits solo creatives who need cloud sync, web access or shareable links; Team is the better match for groups that need real-time collaboration and guest access. It is not the right free option for client work, and beta status may put off users who need a settled, predictable tool.

Pros and cons

Pros: Unlimited boards, flexible image arrangement and PNG/JPEG export support a focused reference-board workflow.
Pros: Offline desktop use with local storage and optional cloud sync gives users a choice about where their boards live.
Pros: Pro adds cloud sharing, while Team offers real-time collaboration, guest access and substantially more storage.
Cons: Free is limited to personal, non-commercial use, so paid creative work requires a subscription.
Cons: Beta status means features may change and results are not guaranteed.
Cons: Linux support is limited to x86_64 AppImage downloads, with no ARM build or common alternative package formats.

Alternatives

For a broader shortlist, see Mood Board Software. Choose PureRef instead if you want a free personal option available on Linux, macOS and Windows. Rayon may suit users looking for a free editing plan with model and design-library tools, though its PDF and DWG export and some libraries are limited. Choose Mattoboard if you want a web-based option with AI credits and rendering features, subject to its board and monthly render limits.

Milanote is worth considering if you need access across mobile, desktop and web, with a free plan capped at 100 notes, images or links and 10 file uploads. MoodBoard AI is another web-based option for users who want AI generation and related tools. ShopLook may fit users looking for a fashion-oriented creative canvas across mobile and web. Moodboard is a free web option with boards for images, notes, links, tasks and files. Kanvaz is a free, MIT-licensed desktop alternative for Linux, macOS and Windows with no feature paywall.

Verdict

Choose Moodis if you are an artist who wants a flexible, image-first board, values offline local storage, or needs Pro’s cloud sharing and Team’s collaboration. The strongest reason to look elsewhere is the combination of beta uncertainty and the free plan’s commercial-use restriction; Linux users who need native packages or ARM support also have a clear reason to consider another tool.
