Overview

Pro Tools is a digital audio workstation for recording, editing and mixing music and audio for picture. It is best suited to producers and audio professionals who need a large-track workflow; the main trade-off is that higher track counts and video-post tools require pricier plans.

Its breadth spans MIDI sequencing, virtual instruments, samples, recording and detailed editing. Support for third-party plugins, cloud collaboration and noise reduction adds flexibility, while the distinction between plans matters: the free tier is tightly capped, and only Studio and Ultimate include video tracks and timecode for sound-to-picture work.

Key features

Recording and editing: Loop and punch-in recording, playlist comping and up to 256 simultaneous audio inputs suit sessions with layered takes or many sources. Slip, Grid, Shuffle and Spot modes, Elastic Audio, clip gain, pitch manipulation and audio-to-MIDI conversion offer precise ways to reshape material; this depth is most useful to people working regularly with multitrack sessions.
Music production and mixing: MIDI tools, virtual instruments, samples and arrangement features support composition as well as recording. Automation, flexible routing, folder tracks and mixing plugins help manage complex mixes, and spatial rendering supports Dolby Atmos and Audio Vivid. That makes Pro Tools a broad production environment rather than just a recorder.
Audio post: Studio and Ultimate add video tracks and timecode for frame-accurate scoring, dialogue editing and sound-to-picture work. Ultimate's 64 video tracks and editing make it the more capable option for larger post workflows; the lower tiers do not include video tracks.
Plugin ecosystem: ARA 2 integrations include plugins from Acon Digital, Celemony, iZotope, Steinberg, Synchro Arts, Sound Radix and Waves. Active subscribers and customers with perpetual upgrade plans receive Melodyne essential, RX 11 Spectral Editor, Acoustica Essentials, DynAssist Lite, RePitch Elements, SpectraLayers Go and WaveLab Go.

Pricing

Pro Tools uses a freemium model, with a free tier, paid plans and a 30-day trial. Intro is free forever and aimed at casual creators; it allows up to 8 audio, 8 instrument and 8 MIDI tracks. That is enough for small projects, but the caps quickly constrain arrangements with more parts.

Artist — $9.99 USD per month, billed monthly: Up to 32 audio tracks and 64 MIDI tracks; the Pro Tools Artist plan also specifies 110+ instruments and effects. It is the entry paid option for smaller music projects, but offers substantially less track capacity than Studio and no video track.
Studio — $34.99 USD per month, billed monthly: Up to 512 audio tracks, 1,024 MIDI tracks and 1 video track; the Pro Tools Studio plan also specifies 130+ instruments and effects and immersive mixing. This is the practical step up for larger music sessions or basic video-linked post work, though one video track limits its appeal for projects needing extensive picture editing.
Ultimate — $99.00 USD per month, billed monthly: Up to 2,048 audio tracks, 1,024 MIDI tracks and 64 video tracks, with video editing and full audio-post workflows. It is aimed at demanding post-production setups; music makers who do not need that capacity may be paying for headroom they will not use.

Annual pricing is also given as $99 for Artist, $299 for Studio and $599 for Ultimate. Perpetual upgrade plans are $69, $199 and $499 respectively, and renew or update existing perpetual licenses rather than serving as a new standalone license. Studio Education is $99 annually, $9.99 annual-paid-monthly or $99 for a perpetual upgrade; Ultimate Education is $299 for an annual paid-annual subscription. New annual-paid-monthly subscriptions have not been sold since January 1, 2023. Existing annual-paid-monthly Studio renewals are $34.99, and Ultimate renewals are $99.99; those monthly-renewal amounts are distinct from the regular annual prices. Check the applicable term before choosing, since annual-paid-monthly and paid-upfront annual subscriptions are not interchangeable.

Platforms

Pro Tools runs on macOS and Windows. Avid's minimum requirements name macOS Tahoe 26.3.x, Sequoia 15.7.x and Sonoma 14.8.x, plus Windows 11 versions 25H2 or 24H2. The system requires 16 GB of RAM, 15 GB of free installation space and an internet connection for installation and activation. Support is available through the community; users with an active support contract, subscription or Avid Support Code can also create a support case or call Avid.

Who it's for

Pro Tools is a strong fit for producers, studios and artists who need extensive recording, editing and mixing tools in one workstation, and for audio-post users who need video synchronization and timecode. Intro is a sensible starting point for casual creators with small sessions. Choose Artist for more room in music projects, Studio for high track counts and a single video track, and Ultimate when a larger video-post workflow justifies its capacity and price. It is a weaker fit for users who only need a basic audio editor or do not need its multitrack depth.

Pros and cons

Pro: Broad recording, editing, MIDI and mixing tools cover both music production and audio post, so many workflows can stay in one workstation.
Pro: Track ceilings scale from 8 audio tracks in Intro to 2,048 in Ultimate, giving larger sessions a clear upgrade path.
Pro: Studio and Ultimate offer video tracks and timecode, while Ultimate adds 64 video tracks and editing for fuller post-production work.
Con: Intro's 8-track limits make it unsuitable for larger arrangements, and video tracks start only with Studio.
Con: Studio costs $34.99 USD per month and Ultimate $99.00 USD per month on monthly subscriptions, so their additional capacity is hard to justify for modest projects.
Con: Installation and activation require an internet connection, and the stated minimum is 16 GB of RAM.

Alternatives

For simpler editing rather than a full production workstation, Audacity is a free desktop audio editor with no subscription and support across Android, iOS, Linux, macOS and Windows. PhotoDirector is another option. WavePad is another option. Ocenaudio is a free downloadable desktop audio editor for Linux, macOS and Windows. Soundop is another option. DSP-Quattro is a macOS alternative with a free trial. SpectraLayers Pro is a paid alternative with a free trial for spectral audio editing, repair and restoration, and AI-assisted processing. Ardour is another option. Browse Digital Audio Workstations, Audio Editing Software, Game Audio Editors or Game Music Software for more choices.

Verdict

Choose Pro Tools if your work needs serious multitrack recording and editing, or if you need its Studio and Ultimate audio-post workflows. Its breadth and scalable track capacity are the strongest reasons to buy; the monthly cost and plan-dependent video limits are the reasons to look elsewhere if your projects are small or focused on basic editing.
