Overview

RentPay brings scheduled rent funding together with bill smoothing, retailer rewards and optional credit building. Tenants can choose among several payment methods and set deposits to match their pay cycle, including payday debits before rent is due. The agent-only rule is decisive: RentPay does not serve tenants who rent directly from a private landlord.

Key features

Rent can be paid by bank transfer, PayID, BPAY, debit or credit card, PayPal, Alipay, WeChat Pay or UnionPay. The breadth is useful when a tenant needs more than a bank transfer, but the percentage charges on cards and digital wallets make those choices costly for recurring rent. RentPay supports weekly, fortnightly and monthly deposit schedules and can debit funds on payday ahead of the due date.

Cleared wallet funds earn 2.50% p.a. before being paid to the agent’s trust account. Interest is calculated on up to $9,500, and the wallet balance cannot exceed $9,999. Those caps make the interest a modest benefit on money awaiting rent payment, not a reason to hold a larger balance.

Bill smoothing lets users spread bills from any Australian provider into smaller weekly, fortnightly or monthly payments. Paylab rewards of up to 15% at more than 140 Australian retailers can be transferred to the RentPay account, though the value depends on using participating retailers. Scorebuilder reports account status monthly to illion; drawn credit is repaid over four fortnights by automatic direct debit. It may suit someone seeking credit-building activity, but its application, account, usage and missed-payment fees call for careful budgeting.

Funds are held in an Australian bank trust account. RentPay says personal and payment information is stored in a secure high-security data centre, that it is PCI compliant, and that its security practices receive an annual audit. It works alongside existing trust-accounting software and supports BPAY/DEFT or bank-transfer/OSKO payments to agents. Australian-based phone, email and live-chat support runs Monday to Friday, 8:30am to 6:30pm AEST. Payment history is viewable in the app, but cannot be downloaded, a drawback for renters who need an exportable record.

Pricing

The RentPay account costs 0.00 AUD per month, with $0 to sign up and $0 to send money by the no-fee methods. Transaction charges apply to other routes: 1.15% for credit/debit card, 1.75% for PayPal, 1.50% for Alipay/WeChat Pay, 2.20% for UnionPay and $1.00 for BPAY. The free account is the sensible starting point for tenants who can use a no-fee method; frequent use of the charged options can erode its appeal.

Scorebuilder has a $5.00 one-time application fee, offers up to $500 credit, and adds a $1.50 monthly account fee, a $4.00 fortnightly usage fee while a balance is outstanding, and a $15.00 missed-payment fee. This is an optional, separately charged service rather than a free part of rent payment. The $4.00 usage fee and late charge are especially relevant to anyone who may struggle to meet automatic repayments.

Platforms

RentPay is available on Android, iOS and the web. Autopay, payment reminders and a tenant payment portal support routine rent management; owner disbursements are not offered, so this is not a landlord payout tool.

Who it's for

RentPay fits tenants paying through an agent who want to align rent funding with payday, use bill smoothing, or collect eligible shopping rewards. It is less suitable for private-landlord tenants, people who need downloadable payment records, or renters who would rely on fee-bearing payment methods and want to avoid transaction charges.

Pros and cons

Pros: Weekly, fortnightly and monthly scheduling, including payday debits, helps match rent funding to a tenant’s pay cycle.
Pros: The account has no monthly or signup fee, and several payment options carry no sending fee.
Pros: Bill smoothing, transferable Paylab rewards and capped interest add useful extras beyond rent payment.
Cons: Eligibility is limited to tenants renting through an agent, excluding private-landlord arrangements.
Cons: Card, wallet and BPAY charges can make the free account more expensive in practice.
Cons: Scorebuilder adds recurring and missed-payment fees, while its drawn funds are repaid over four fortnights.
Cons: Rental payment history cannot be downloaded, and owner disbursements are not supported.

Verdict

RentPay is a good fit for agent-renting tenants who want rent deposits to track their pay schedule and can use a no-fee payment route. Its free account and flexible cadence are the main reasons to choose it; agent-only eligibility, charged payment methods and Scorebuilder’s added fees are strong reasons to look elsewhere.
