Overview

Narrat combines an approachable scripting language with built-in game systems and visual presentation tools. Scripts support branching choices, functions, variables and conditions, so authors can build reactive stories and reuse logic. The document-based model is a better fit for creators comfortable working with scripts than for those who want to author entirely through visual diagrams.

The included systems cover skills and skill checks, inventory, quests, achievements, saving and loading, audio, and notifications. That gives narrative RPG projects a useful foundation without requiring creators to build each system from scratch. The FAQ reports a working project with more than 100,000 words and no known limit to game size or complexity; that is encouraging for large stories, though not a guarantee for every project.

Key features

Story, visuals and customization

Interactive screens, character portraits and poses, animations, and video backgrounds let creators stage scenes beyond text and dialogue. CSS theming and editable YAML settings provide ways to adapt the interface and configuration to a project. Built-in localization syntax and a language switcher support games intended for multiple languages, reducing the need to assemble that workflow separately.

Extending the engine

The TypeScript plugin API supports custom commands, Vue components, menu tabs, data stores, and lifecycle hooks. That flexibility can help developers add project-specific behavior, but it is most valuable to teams able to work with TypeScript and Vue rather than authors seeking a no-code tool. Narrat also has a Godot 4 integration plugin, and consulting arrangements can support integration into an existing website, infrastructure, program, or another game engine.

Pricing

Narrat is free and open source under the MIT license. The Free and open source plan costs 0.00 USD per free and permits personal or commercial use without restrictions. There is no paid license tier to unlock core use, making it accessible to hobbyists and commercial creators alike.

Enterprise support and consulting has custom pricing and includes custom features, technical support, integrations, and partnership options. It is aimed at organizations that need tailored help rather than users who simply want to make and publish a game.

Platforms

Narrat is available for Linux, macOS, Windows, and the web. Games can be published as static websites or desktop applications for Windows, Mac, and Linux. Mobile delivery is through HTML5 web games, so this supports web-based mobile play rather than a stated native mobile build path. Steam builds are described as experimental, which makes Narrat a less certain choice for projects where a dependable Steam pipeline is central.

Who it's for

Narrat is a strong candidate for writers, indie developers, and small teams making branching stories or narrative RPGs who value built-in quests, inventory, and character presentation. Its no-cost commercial license and localization tools also suit projects that need to reach audiences in multiple languages without adding a software license expense. It is less suited to creators who require purely visual authoring or to teams that need mature Steam publishing support.

Pros and cons

Pros: A broad set of narrative RPG systems, visual tools, and localization features reduces the need to assemble separate components.
Pros: The MIT license allows personal and commercial use without restrictions or a license fee.
Pros: TypeScript and Vue extension points give developers room to add custom behaviors and interface components.
Cons: The scripting-centered authoring model may not suit creators who expect a fully visual workflow.
Cons: Steam build support is experimental, a drawback for teams whose release plan depends on that channel.
Cons: Mobile games are delivered as HTML5 web games rather than through a stated native mobile build path.

Yarn Spinner is another free, open-source option if its Unity, Godot, and Unreal integrations or VS Code extension better suit your development workflow; its Yarn Spinner+ for Unity plan costs 75.00 USD per onc.

ChatMapper may suit projects that fit its free-plan limits of one editor, three projects, and 300 nodes per project, with core exports and commercial use permitted. Narratyr is another free-plan alternative. Choose Ren'Py if you need stated Android and iOS support alongside desktop and web platforms; it is free to use for commercial and non-commercial purposes. Arcweave may suit browser-based collaboration within its Basic plan limits of 200 items per project and three projects. Naninovel is a paid alternative with a free trial.
