Overview

Netdata brings metrics, logs, dashboards, alerts, and machine-learning capabilities into one platform. It says its agent supports per-second metrics and ML-based anomaly detection and troubleshooting, making it a strong fit for teams that need detailed visibility into changing infrastructure rather than only periodic checks.

Deployment can be managed through Netdata Cloud or run on premises, including in air-gapped environments. Netdata says metrics stay on the user's infrastructure and only metadata reaches the cloud, a meaningful distinction for organizations with data-sovereignty requirements. It also lists agentless monitoring, VM and service monitoring, and Linux and Windows OS coverage.

Key features

Broad integration and data-format support: Netdata lists more than 800 collectors and notification channels, including Slack, PagerDuty, Microsoft Teams, email, and webhooks. The agent accepts Prometheus, OpenMetrics, StatsD, and OpenTelemetry data, and exports to Prometheus Remote Write, InfluxDB, Graphite, OpenTSDB, and TimescaleDB. That breadth can reduce friction in mixed environments.
Per-second monitoring and anomaly detection: Netdata says its agent combines per-second metrics with machine-learning-based anomaly detection and troubleshooting. This is useful where rapid changes matter, though the value depends on whether teams want that level of monitoring across their infrastructure.
Mobile alerts: Native iOS and Android apps provide alerts and notifications, giving teams a way to receive monitoring updates away from a workstation.
Security and access controls: Netdata Cloud is stated to be SOC 2 Type 2 certified. Business includes SSO and role-based access control, which are more relevant to organizations with managed access requirements than to a small personal deployment.

Pricing

Netdata uses a freemium model, with a free plan, paid plans, and a 14-day trial. Signing up for Netdata Cloud starts a Business trial for any number of nodes with no limits, giving teams room to evaluate it beyond the Community plan's caps.

Community — 0.00 USD per free: The free plan allows up to five active connected nodes and one active custom dashboard per room. It is a sensible way for individuals or small teams to start, but the node and dashboard limits will constrain broader monitoring.
Business — 4.50 USD per month, billed annually; total cost: $540.00/year: Business includes unlimited metrics and logs, unlimited custom dashboards, and unlimited data retention. It is the clearer fit for teams that outgrow Community or need the listed access controls. Annual billing is a material commitment compared with the free plan.
Homelab — 90.00 USD per year: This plan includes unlimited nodes, subject to fair usage. It suits a home lab where the Community node cap is too restrictive, but the fair-usage condition matters for unusually intensive use.

Documentation and community support are listed, with premium support available. The Community plan's low entry cost comes with strict capacity limits; Business removes those listed caps, while Homelab targets a narrower home-lab use case.

Platforms

Netdata lists Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, self-hosted, web, and Windows. The agent's stated OS coverage for monitoring is Linux and Windows. The mix of cloud and on-premises deployment, including air-gapped options, makes it more flexible than a cloud-only service for environments with deployment constraints.

Who it's for

Netdata names platform engineers, DevOps teams, SREs, developers, system administrators, CISOs, DBAs, network engineers, and MSPs among its audiences. Its breadth of formats and integrations is most compelling for teams monitoring varied infrastructure; Community is better suited to a small setup, while Business is the practical step up when node, dashboard, or retention needs exceed the free plan.

Pros and cons

Pro: More than 800 collectors and notification channels, plus multiple ingestion and export formats, suit heterogeneous infrastructure.
Pro: On-premises and air-gapped deployment options, alongside the stated metrics residency approach, can suit data-sovereignty needs.
Pro: A 14-day Business trial covers any number of nodes without limits, useful for evaluating beyond the free tier's constraints.
Con: Community is capped at five active connected nodes and one active custom dashboard per room, limiting its usefulness for growing deployments.
Con: Business is billed annually at $540.00/year, so access to its unlimited metrics, logs, dashboards, and retention requires a substantial upfront commitment relative to the free plan.
Con: Homelab's unlimited nodes are subject to fair usage, so the headline node allowance is not an unconditional fit for every workload.

Alternatives

Checkmk is worth considering for readers who want a free Community plan with 2000+ pre-built integrations and support for up to about 100 hosts.
Sensu Go is another freemium option; its free plan covers 100 nodes across one site.
Icinga suits readers seeking a free, open-source edition with unlimited hosts and services and no subscription requirement.
Mackerel may suit a smaller setup that can work within its free plan's 5-host, 500-metric, and 1-day retention limits.
Nagios XI offers a free tier capped at 7 nodes or 100 services, whichever comes first, with self-support.
openITCOCKPIT is an alternative with a free Community Edition for infrastructure and application monitoring.
Site24x7 Server Monitoring is an option for readers seeking server monitoring with a paid Lite plan listed at $9.00 USD per month when paid annually.
Zabbix is another alternative to compare for infrastructure monitoring.

Verdict

Choose Netdata if your team needs detailed, fast infrastructure monitoring, broad integration support, and cloud, on-premises, or air-gapped deployment choices. The Community plan is a credible entry point for small environments, but its five-node limit is decisive; larger teams should weigh Business's annual commitment against the value of unlimited metrics, logs, dashboards, and retention. Look elsewhere if those caps or the annual Business billing do not fit your deployment.
