Overview

NodeBB combines topic discussions with real-time chat, member groups, tags and moderation. Members can write with a WYSIWYG editor or Markdown, follow topics and tags, and receive notifications for follows, likes and subscriptions. Groups have activity feeds, giving communities several ways to organize participation beyond a single stream of posts.

Administrators can create unlimited administrator and moderator accounts and set permissions for each. A public Read API and RESTful Write API support integrations, while more than 500 plugins and themes can be installed from the control panel. That breadth offers room to shape a community, but operators should consider plugin security and data practices: NodeBB's bug bounty testing is limited to try.nodebb.org, excludes third-party plugins, and plugins or themes may collect data outside its DPA.

NodeBB was founded in 2014 by three developers and is headquartered in Canada. The company identifies itself as NodeBB, Inc.

Key features

Discussion and live activity: Visual and Markdown editors, real-time chat, and notifications for follows, likes and subscribed topics support both asynchronous discussion and quicker interaction.
Groups and tags: Member-created groups have activity feeds; topic tags can be followed for notifications. This gives larger communities tools to separate interests, though teams will need to decide how to structure them.
Administration and moderation: Unlimited administrator and moderator accounts with configurable permissions support distributed community management. NodeBB also lists integrations with Akismet, StopForumSpam and Project Honeypot for spam prevention.
Extensions and APIs: More than 500 plugins and themes are installable through the control panel, and the Read and RESTful Write APIs offer integration paths. Greater flexibility comes with the need to review third-party components.
Search: Basic full-text search uses the bundled database engine. Solr and Elasticsearch require third-party plugins, so communities that depend on those search systems should plan for extra setup rather than assume they are built in.
Privacy and consent: Registration presents information on user data and rights and requires affirmative consent. Additional data collection by third-party plugins and themes sits outside NodeBB's DPA.

Pricing

NodeBB offers free self-hosted software under GPLv3 and paid hosted plans starting at 20.00 USD per month. Paid plans include unlimited staff users, SSL, custom plugins, a custom domain and priority support; the main differences are pageview and storage allowances and backup frequency.

Plan	Price	What it includes
Self-hosted	0.00 USD per free	Free to download and install under GPLv3 on your own server; open-source software.
Starter	20.00 USD per month	50,000 pageviews, 5gb storage and weekly backups.
Hamlet	100.00 USD per month	500,000 pageviews, 20gb storage and daily backups.
Village	250.00 USD per month	2,000,000 pageviews, 100gb storage and daily backups.
City	750.00 USD per month	10,000,000 pageviews, 300gb storage and daily backups.
Enterprise Solutions	Custom pricing	Custom integrations and feature development, theme customization, Single Sign-On, migration services, and premium hosting or self-hosting.

Starter is the lowest-cost hosted route for a smaller community that can stay within 50,000 pageviews and 5gb; its weekly rather than daily backups are a trade-off. Hamlet, Village and City raise the traffic and storage ceilings while keeping daily backups, making them progressively better fits for busier communities. The self-hosted plan avoids a software charge but puts server installation and operation on the organization. NodeBB also offers a 14-day trial. Paid hosting plans list priority support, while community support is available through its forum.

Platforms

NodeBB supports web, Linux, macOS and Windows, as well as self-hosted deployment and an API. Its documentation covers installation on Linux distributions, macOS and Windows, plus cloud deployment options including Docker. This range gives technical teams several deployment paths, though self-hosting requires them to manage their own server.

Who it's for

NodeBB is a strong fit for organizations that want a discussion-first brand community or product-support board, especially those needing many staff accounts, configurable permissions and room to extend the platform. Hosted plans suit teams that prefer published pageview and storage allowances with priority support; self-hosting suits teams prepared to manage deployment themselves. It is less compelling for search-heavy communities unwilling to rely on third-party plugins or for operators who do not want to assess extensions' data practices.

Pros and cons

Pro: Unlimited administrator and moderator accounts make it practical to share community oversight without a staff-seat cap.
Pro: More than 500 plugins and themes, plus Read and Write APIs, provide multiple ways to adapt the platform and connect software.
Pro: Both free self-hosting and hosted plans let organizations choose between server control and a paid service.
Con: Solr and Elasticsearch search require third-party plugins; the bundled engine may not fit communities that need those options.
Con: Third-party plugins and themes are excluded from the bug bounty scope and may collect data outside the DPA, so extension review matters.
Con: Starter has weekly backups and caps of 50,000 pageviews and 5gb storage, which may constrain a growing hosted community.

Verdict

Choose NodeBB if you want a configurable forum with active discussion features, generous staff administration and a genuine choice between hosted and self-hosted deployment. Its strongest case is flexibility without a staff-seat ceiling; look elsewhere if bundled advanced search is essential or you want to avoid the security and data considerations of third-party extensions.
