Overview

Visual Studio Code is an open-source code editor for desktop and browser use, with optional AI-assisted editing and agent workflows. It suits developers who want one adaptable workspace for many languages and development setups. Its broad editing and extension toolkit is compelling, though the web version has a limited execution environment and extensions require careful selection.

Key features

JavaScript, TypeScript, CSS, and HTML support come built in; extensions add support for almost every major programming language. The Marketplace offers more than 80,000 extensions, giving teams and individuals room to tailor the editor, but also making extension selection and administration important. Extensions are signed and signatures are checked during installation; they can nevertheless access files, make network requests, and run processes with VS Code's permissions. Organizations can restrict which extensions are installable or operate a private marketplace.

Everyday tools include multi-cursor and column editing, large-file handling, an integrated terminal, code running and debugging, build tasks, and local history. Git source control is built in, and VS Code connects to GitHub Codespaces and remote development environments. Remote Development can open a folder in a container on a remote machine, useful when a project needs a remote workspace. Settings Sync shares user settings across instances, and profiles let users switch between customization sets.

AI-powered inline suggestions and intelligent completions complement agent workflows. Agents can plan tasks, change code, run commands, and iterate, while users can move between agent work and direct coding in the same editor. Copilot, third-party providers, and user-supplied model keys are supported; custom instructions, skills, agents, MCP servers, plugins, and extensions provide ways to shape the workflow. Starting to build with AI agents requires a GitHub account, so this is less friction-free for someone who wants to try agent features without an account.

Workspace Trust can keep workspace code from running automatically while a project is in Restricted Mode. VS Code collects telemetry, which users can disable through the telemetry.telemetryLevel setting; extensions may collect telemetry separately. The license and privacy statement apply, and Microsoft may not provide support services.

Pricing

Visual Studio Code is free and is free for private or commercial use. There is no free trial because the editor is free to use. That makes it a practical option for individual developers and organizations that want the editor without a software subscription cost; organizations still need to account for extension governance and their chosen AI providers or workflows.

Platforms

The desktop editor runs on macOS, Windows, and Linux, with Linux DEB and RPM downloads. Visual Studio Code for the Web offers browser access, but its execution environment is limited, so it is not a full substitute when work depends on local execution. Insiders edition and other platforms are also offered.

Who it's for

VS Code is a strong fit for developers who work across languages, want a large extension ecosystem, or need integrated Git, debugging, terminal, and remote-development tools in one editor. Its agent features will appeal to people who want AI to take on multi-step coding tasks while retaining the option to edit directly. For teams, extension controls can help manage what users install. Those who require a full browser-based execution environment, do not want to use a GitHub account to begin with agents, or prefer not to grant extensions broad process and file permissions should weigh those constraints before choosing it.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free for private and commercial use, with no trial deadline or subscription charge for the editor.
Pros: Broad language coverage, built-in editing and debugging tools, and more than 80,000 extensions support varied development needs.
Pros: Remote Development, Codespaces connectivity, Settings Sync, profiles, and organizational marketplace controls support varied work setups.
Cons: The web editor's execution environment is limited, which can rule it out as a complete browser-based workspace.
Cons: A GitHub account is required to start building with AI agents.
Cons: Extension signatures are verified, but extensions still run with permissions to access files, make network requests, and run processes.
Cons: Telemetry can be disabled for VS Code, but extensions may collect separate telemetry, and Microsoft may not provide support services.

Verdict

Choose Visual Studio Code if you want a free, adaptable editor with broad language coverage, strong built-in tools, remote-work options, and AI agents that can take on multi-step tasks. Look elsewhere if you need a fully capable browser execution environment, want to start agent work without a GitHub account, or are unwilling to manage extension permissions.
