Overview

Nx is a build system for JavaScript and TypeScript monorepos, with plugins that extend it to other languages. It suits teams coordinating multiple projects and CI jobs in one repository. Its strongest case is bringing dependency-aware task execution, caching and code generation together; the main trade-off is that shared CI features can bring usage charges and monthly limits.

Founded in 2016 by former Googlers Jeff Cross and Victor Savkin, Nx spans Build Automation Software, Monorepo Management Tools and Code Generators.

Key features

Dependency-aware task execution: Nx builds project and task graphs, orders tasks by dependency, and runs independent tasks in parallel when possible. That is useful when a repository contains interconnected projects and build steps, rather than a collection of unrelated jobs.
Local and shared caching: Nx Core includes local caching; Nx Cloud adds a remote cache shared by a team and CI. Local caching offers a starting point without Cloud, while the shared cache is more valuable to teams whose contributors and CI can reuse task artifacts.
Distributed CI: Nx Cloud can distribute work across Nx Agents and pack tasks dynamically based on CPU and memory use. This is aimed at teams seeking to spread CI work across agents; its usefulness depends on whether the Cloud plan’s contributor, connection and credit economics fit the workflow.
Generators, migrations and executors: Nx plugins can infer tasks, generate and modify code, update dependencies and provide executors. This makes Nx more than a task runner for teams that want tooling to help maintain project conventions as well as run builds.
Broad tool and CI integration: Nx documents support for Angular, React, Vue, Node.js, Java, .NET, Vite, Webpack, Rspack, Jest, Cypress and Playwright, among other tools. It provides CI workflow setup for GitHub, CircleCI, GitLab, Azure Pipelines, Jenkins and Bitbucket Pipelines, giving teams several established ways to connect it to their stack.
Cloud security controls: Nx Cloud describes trusted-branch cache writes, artifact traceability and automatic invalidation of artifacts created with revoked tokens. API communications are encrypted in transit, and task artifacts can be encrypted end to end before being sent to remote cache. These controls matter for teams sharing build artifacts across CI and contributors.

Pricing

Nx uses a freemium model, with a free plan and paid service from $29/mo. The plans distinguish not only support and feature access but also contributors, CI concurrency and usage, so teams should weigh the full operating cost rather than the entry price alone.

Hobby — 0.00 USD per free: Free forever, with 50,000 credits resetting monthly, 5 contributors, 10 concurrent CI connections and community support. Nx describes it as suitable for individual developers and small teams exploring Nx Cloud. The cap is material: once monthly credits run out, Nx Cloud features turn off until the next reset.
Team — 29.00 USD per month: Includes $29/month in usage credit and email support. Additional usage costs $5.50 per 10,000 credits, contributors cost $19 each, and concurrent CI connections cost $2.25 each. This is the paid option for teams that need more than Hobby, but the included credit does not make added usage, people or CI connections free.
Enterprise — custom pricing: Includes complete feature access, dedicated support and SLAs, isolated or self-hosted deployment, and SSO/SAML. It fits organizations that need those controls and support commitments; it is not a fixed-price step up from Team.

Nx offers a free trial. The stated terms give no trial duration, so the decision-relevant point is that Hobby remains a free-forever plan with monthly credits rather than an unlimited Cloud tier.

Platforms

Nx supports Linux, macOS and Windows, as well as web and self-hosted access. Its multi-platform reach is useful for teams with mixed developer environments or a self-hosted deployment requirement; Enterprise specifically includes isolated or self-hosted deployment.

Who it's for

Nx is a strong fit for JavaScript and TypeScript teams managing a monorepo with interdependent projects, especially when they want task ordering, caching and code generation in one system. Teams using its documented language, framework and CI integrations can also benefit from the plugin and workflow coverage.

Solo developers and small teams can explore Nx Cloud on Hobby, but its credit ceiling and five-contributor limit make it a bounded entry point. Teams with steady CI demand should account for usage, contributors and concurrent connections on Team. Nx is less compelling for a small, simple build that does not need monorepo coordination, shared caching or generation workflows.

Pros and cons

Pro — Dependency-aware parallel execution: Graphs capture task order while allowing independent work to run concurrently, which suits interconnected repositories.
Pro — Caching and distributed CI in one system: Local caching is included in Nx Core, with Nx Cloud adding shared cache and agent-based distribution.
Pro — Plugins cover maintenance as well as builds: Task inference, code generation, migrations and dependency updates can support consistent project workflows.
Con — Hobby Cloud has a hard monthly ceiling: Cloud features stop when its 50,000 credits are used, and the plan allows five contributors and ten concurrent CI connections.
Con — Team costs can scale beyond the base price: Additional credits, contributors and CI connections each have separate charges.
Con — Enterprise pricing is custom: Organizations needing its full feature access, support commitments or deployment controls must pursue a custom-priced plan.

Alternatives

Consider Gradle if an open-source build system with a free plan and Linux, macOS and Windows support better matches your needs. Pants is another free option, with an Apache License 2.0, no-charge royalty-free open-source plan and Linux, macOS and Windows support.

Bazel is a free open-source build and test tool from Google for Linux, macOS and Windows. Rush is a free, open-source JavaScript monorepo manager installable via npm, for Linux, macOS and Windows. Buck2 is Meta’s free, open-source build system, with Linux, macOS, Windows and self-hosted support.

Meson is a free open-source build system for Linux, macOS and Windows. AWS CodeBuild instead uses usage-based pricing tied to build duration and selected compute type, with a free plan; it is worth considering when that compute-based billing model suits your build needs better. build2 is a free option for Linux, macOS and Windows.

Verdict

Choose Nx if your team needs to coordinate a JavaScript or TypeScript monorepo and wants dependency-aware execution, reusable caches and plugin-driven code generation in the same tool. Its local cache and free Hobby tier lower the barrier to trying the workflow, while Nx Cloud can add shared caching and distributed CI. Look elsewhere if your build needs are simple, or if contributor, connection and credit charges make Team’s scaling model a poor fit.
