Overview

OBS combines real-time video and audio capture with mixing, letting you build scenes from windows, images, text, browser windows, webcams and capture cards. You can record or stream at resolutions up to 4K, and OBS supports popular streaming services such as Twitch and YouTube. Streams connect directly from your computer to the chosen service rather than passing through OBS servers.

This is desktop production software, not a hosted studio: you need a compatible computer and must manage the production locally. Its open-source GPLv2 license permits commercial use subject to the license terms.

Key features

Scenes and production controls

There is no scene-count ceiling, and customizable transitions—including user-provided stinger videos—make it practical to prepare distinct layouts for different parts of a show. Studio Mode lets you preview scenes and sources before putting them live, while Multiview monitors up to eight scenes. These controls help reduce on-air mistakes, though they reward users willing to prepare and manage a more involved setup. Hotkeys cover many actions, including recording and streaming controls.

Audio and extensibility

The mixer applies filters to individual sources, including noise gate, noise suppression and gain, and supports VST plugins. An API, native plugins and Lua or Python scripts allow further customization. That breadth can suit creators with specific production needs, but plugin and scripting options are most useful to people comfortable managing a configurable tool.

Streaming workflow

OBS uses an encoder as its primary stream mode and supports stream scheduling and loop or replay streams. It supports a single streaming destination at a time, so anyone who needs to send one production to several services simultaneously should choose another workflow.

Pricing

OBS Studio: 0.00 USD per free. The free plan has no watermarks or usage limitations and permits commercial use. There is no paid tier or free trial to weigh against it. This is an unusually direct fit for individuals and organizations that want recording and streaming controls without a software subscription; the trade-off is that OBS does not provide multistreaming.

Platforms

OBS is available for Windows, macOS and Linux, with no browser-based studio. Windows support covers Windows 10 and 11; macOS support is macOS 13.0 or newer. Linux distribution includes Flathub and an Ubuntu 24.04-or-newer PPA. Check compatibility before installing, particularly on older Macs or Linux systems outside those distribution paths.

Who it's for

OBS is a strong choice for streamers, educators and other video creators who want to combine multiple sources, shape their audio and prepare scenes before going live. Its unrestricted free plan and commercial-use permission also make it viable for organizations that need local recording or streaming software without per-use caps. It is less suited to someone who needs a hosted browser studio, simultaneous multistreaming or a tightly managed, turnkey production workflow.

Pros and cons

Unlimited scenes and live previews: build multiple layouts and review them before they go live, useful for productions with planned segments.
Detailed audio control: per-source filters and VST support provide options for shaping a mixed setup.
No-cost commercial use: the free plan has no watermarks or usage limits, with commercial use allowed under GPLv2 terms.
Extensibility: plugins and Lua or Python scripts can tailor the software beyond its built-in controls.
No multistreaming: users who need to broadcast to multiple services at once will need a different solution.
Desktop-only workflow: there is no browser-based studio, and users must meet platform requirements and operate the software on their own computer.

Alternatives

For game recording, the right alternative depends on whether you value replay tools, cloud hosting, platform integration or a paid lifetime license more than OBS's open-ended scene production.

Outplayed is a freemium Windows alternative, with a Core plan that includes three months of Outplayed.tv hosting and a Premium plan that includes unlimited hosting, ad removal, layout customization and enhanced fullscreen mode.
NVIDIA ShadowPlay is free on Windows 10 or 11 for users with a supported GPU and GeForce 551.52 driver or later.
Bandicam is a freemium alternative across Linux, macOS, web and Windows, with annual and perpetual personal 1-PC options.
Streamlabs Highlighter is free on macOS and Windows and is built into Streamlabs Desktop, with automated gameplay highlight detection and clip editing and export.
Action! is a paid Windows alternative with a 19.77 USD per once Home use lifetime license for non-commercial use, or a 32.95 USD per once Commercial use license.

Verdict

Choose OBS Studio if you want a no-cost, commercially usable desktop tool with deep scene, audio and extension controls for recording or single-destination streaming. Its main case against it is equally clear: creators who need a browser-based studio or simultaneous streaming to multiple platforms should look elsewhere.
