Overview

Referent is AI-native practice management software for solo practitioners and small law firms that want agents to take on recurring administrative work. Its defining trade-off is clear: agents handle routine workflows, but lawyers must approve client-facing and other high-risk actions. The invitation-only beta makes it a more tentative choice for firms seeking a system they can adopt immediately.

Made by AI Lawtech Sp. z o.o., Referent brings intake, matter administration, email, deadlines, billing preparation and follow-ups into one workflow. It is not an accounting system, so firms should not treat its billing preparation as a substitute for accounting software.

Key features

Intake and matter workflows

Referent screens inquiries, opens matters and prepares engagement materials for lawyer approval; it also supports intake forms. Connecting intake to matter setup can reduce administrative handoffs at a small firm, while approval keeps the lawyer involved before engagement materials go out.

Email and voice operation

Once an inbox is connected, Referent files emails, attachments and related context to the appropriate matter. Users can also direct work by voice and have agents carry it out. These workflows may suit lawyers who want less manual matter filing, though their usefulness depends on connecting the relevant inbox.

Approvals and audit trail

Client-facing and other high-risk actions require explicit lawyer approval, and every action is recorded in an audit trail. That is a meaningful control for firms wary of delegating consequential work to AI, but it also means Referent is not a hands-off substitute for lawyer oversight.

Integrations and mobile access

Referent works with Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive. Outlook and Microsoft 365 are marked as coming soon, so firms built around Microsoft tools should account for that limitation. An MCP server connects to ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Hermes, Gemini, OpenClaw and other compatible apps. iPhone and Android apps let users review agent work, approve actions and check matters while away from a computer.

Security and data handling

Referent hosts data on Google Cloud Platform, with US and EU regional residency, AES-256 encryption at rest, TLS 1.2+ in transit, encrypted backups and per-firm workspace isolation. It says it does not train AI models on client or matter data and uses zero-retention, no-training agreements with model providers. Customers can export their data, and Referent says deletion removes it without shadow copies or training archives. SOC 2 and ISO 27001 are in preparation, not certifications the firm currently holds; organizations that require those certifications may need to wait.

Pricing

Referent uses a freemium model, with a Free plan at 0.00 USD per free. AI usage is included, and no credit card is required. That makes it a low-cost way for eligible firms to consider the workflow, but access is currently private beta or invitation-only. A free trial is also offered. Custom pricing applies where a firm needs a plan beyond the published free option.

The free plan’s published terms do not state a seat quota, AI usage cap, trial length or renewal condition, so firms should confirm those before relying on it for team-wide use. No paid plan price is established here.

Platforms

Referent supports web, Android and iOS. Its mobile apps focus on reviewing agent work, approving actions and checking matters, rather than replacing the need for lawyer review.

Who it's for

Referent is best suited to solo lawyers and small firms that want AI agents to manage routine practice workflows while retaining approval over sensitive actions. It is a weaker fit for firms needing immediate general access, an accounting system, or current Outlook and Microsoft 365 support. Firms with certification requirements should also weigh that SOC 2 and ISO 27001 remain in preparation.

Pros and cons

Pros

Approval controls and audit trail: Lawyers retain explicit control of client-facing and high-risk actions, and actions are recorded.
Connected matter workflows: Intake, email filing, deadlines, billing preparation and follow-ups are handled within a practice-management focus.
Free entry point: The 0.00 USD per free plan includes AI usage and requires no credit card.
Data safeguards: Regional hosting, encryption, workspace isolation and stated no-training commitments address important confidentiality concerns.

Cons

Restricted access: Private beta or invitation-only availability can prevent a firm from adopting it on its own schedule.
Not accounting software: Billing preparation does not make Referent a replacement for a firm's accounting system.
Microsoft integrations are forthcoming: Outlook and Microsoft 365 are marked Soon, limiting its immediate fit for firms centered on those tools.
Certifications are not yet in place: SOC 2 and ISO 27001 are in preparation, which may not satisfy firms requiring current certification.

Verdict

Referent is worth considering for solo lawyers and small firms that want agents to take on recurring administrative work without surrendering approval over consequential actions. Its strongest case is the combination of matter workflows, lawyer controls and a free entry plan. Look elsewhere if you need broad access now, a full accounting system, current Microsoft integrations or completed security certifications.
