Overview

Pomodoist is a task planner with a built-in Pomodoro timer, aimed at people who want to organize work and focus sessions together. Its broad planning toolkit and open-source license are compelling; the 90-day history cap on Free and the gap in Android availability are important trade-offs.

Key features

Planning and focus

Planning tools include an inbox, upcoming tasks, projects, timeline, kanban, and a priority matrix, alongside filters, search, quick-add parsing, task decomposition, and CSV import. That range can support both a straightforward task list and more visual ways to review work, though it may be excessive if you only need a timer. The Pomodoro timer adds configurable breaks, local sounds, focus tracking, custom intervals, and focus statistics.

Voice and teamwork

Voice input creates tasks and can recognize dates, projects, and tags. Pro includes voice tasks and subtasks, making it the relevant upgrade for people who want to capture or break down work by speech. Shared projects, task assignment, and activity history extend the planner to team coordination.

Integrations and control

Optional integrations include Google Calendar, Telegram Mini-App, Apple Watch and widgets, account sync, and voice input. Pomodoist is open source under the AGPL-3.0-only license and can run as an independent server, web app, and native clients, with its own accounts, database, and integration credentials. Self-hosting gives technically equipped users more control, but the practical minimum requirements—Docker Compose v2, make, openssl, curl, 4 GB RAM, and 40 GB free disk—make it a poor fit for someone seeking a turnkey setup.

For cloud sync, Supabase processes tasks, projects, tags, reminders, settings, and focus-session data to provide the service and synchronize devices. The privacy policy says Pomodoist does not sell personal data or display ads; Axiom is used for aggregate website statistics with 30-day retention.

Pricing

The free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and includes tasks, projects and labels, the Pomodoro timer, and productivity reports. Its main drawback is the 90-day limit on completed and deleted task history, so it suits people who do not need a long record of finished work.

Pro costs 29.99 USD per year, billed yearly at $29.99. It includes everything in Free, plus voice tasks, subtasks, dates and projects from speech, and task history forever. This is the practical choice for users who need speech-based capture or a permanent task archive. Pomodoist also has Pro Monthly and Pro Annual plan labels without published prices; custom pricing applies where a plan requires a quote.

Lifetime costs 99.99 USD per once: one payment for forever access to all Pro features, with no subscription renewals. It is aimed at users who prefer a one-time payment over annual billing. A free trial is available, but its length is not established here.

Platforms

Pomodoist is available on macOS, iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, Windows, Linux, and the web, with a Chrome extension in beta and a Telegram option. Android is planned for October 2026, so it is not the right choice for someone who needs Android access now.

Who it's for

Pomodoist suits individuals who want task organization and focus tracking in one app, especially those who benefit from multiple planning views or need team features. Its open-source license and self-hosting option will also appeal to technically capable users who want to operate their own instance. Choose another tool if Android is essential today, if you want only a simple timer, or if a permanent task history is important but you do not want to pay for Pro or Lifetime.

Pros and cons

Pros: Planning views span lists, timeline, kanban, and a priority matrix, so different kinds of work can be organized in the same app.
Pros: Focus tracking, configurable breaks, custom intervals, and statistics connect timed work with task planning.
Pros: Open-source licensing and self-hosting offer a route to running the service with independent accounts and infrastructure.
Cons: Free task history expires after 90 days, limiting long-term review unless you upgrade.
Cons: Android is planned, not currently available, leaving Android users without a native platform option now.
Cons: Self-hosting has specific software and hardware requirements, so it is not a lightweight alternative to using the hosted service.

Verdict

Pomodoist is the strongest fit for people who want a capable task planner, focus timer, and team coordination in one open-source product. The main reasons to choose it are the breadth of planning and the option to self-host; look elsewhere if you need Android today or want task history without a paid plan.
