Overview

Overleaf is an online workspace for writing, compiling, and refining LaTeX documents, best suited to students, researchers, and technical teams working on shared papers or reports. Its mix of editing modes, academic templates, and live coauthoring makes it a focused choice for collaborative LaTeX work, while limited version history and tight free-plan collaboration can constrain larger or revision-heavy projects.

Key features

Flexible editing and starting points

Writers can switch between a Visual Editor and a Code Editor, which lets collaborators work in the mode that suits them while keeping a document in one project. Free templates and example projects for journal articles, theses, and CVs give common academic documents a useful starting structure.

Live collaboration and integrations

Multiple people can edit and comment on a shared document at the same time, with in-document chat for discussion. That makes Overleaf well suited to coauthored technical writing, though the Free plan's one-collaborator-per-project cap prevents a true two-person workflow without moving to a paid tier.

Documented integrations and add-ons include Git and GitHub synchronization, Dropbox, ReadCube, Zotero, Mendeley, R code through knitr, and Grammarly. Google Drive content can be imported into a project, but there is no direct Drive synchronization, so teams expecting a continuously synced Drive workflow should look elsewhere. Overleaf states that it will not use AI tool inputs or outputs to train or develop AI models without consent, except when doing so for the user's exclusive benefit as part of its services.

Security and version history

Overleaf is certified to ISO/IEC 27001:2022, and its Organizations plan includes FedRAMP Li-SaaS authorization. Those credentials may matter to institutions with formal security requirements. Version history is limited, however, making it a weaker fit for teams that need a long record of changes or frequent access to older drafts.

Pricing

Overleaf uses a freemium model, with a free plan and a seven-day trial. The trial gives full access to the chosen plan; the card is charged afterward unless the user cancels before the trial ends.

Free — free: unlimited projects and one collaborator per project. It suits solo writers, but the cap rules out shared editing with even one other person.
Student — custom pricing: unlimited projects and up to 10 collaborators per project. It suits student projects with a small coauthor group.
Standard — custom pricing: unlimited projects and up to 10 collaborators per project. Its stated limits match Student, so the choice between those plans cannot be made on collaborator capacity alone.
Pro — custom pricing: unlimited projects and unlimited collaborators per project. It is the tier for larger coauthor groups that exceed the 10-person cap.
Organizations — custom pricing: for 20+ users, with personalized support, onboarding, and a dedicated account manager. FedRAMP Li-SaaS authorization is also included, making this the plan aimed at institutional deployments with those needs.

Every plan allows unlimited projects, but the limited version history applies a practical constraint for anyone who relies on older drafts. The Student, Standard, Pro, and Organizations prices are custom pricing.

Platforms

Overleaf is available on the web, as an extension, and as a self-hosted option. That range accommodates browser-based work and organizations that need a self-hosted deployment.

Who it's for

Overleaf is a strong fit for students, researchers, and technical writers who need to build LaTeX documents together, especially when journal, thesis, or CV templates save setup time. Research institutions and businesses can consider the Organizations plan for larger groups, personalized onboarding, and account support. Solo writers can start free; small teams should compare Student and Standard, while teams needing more than 10 collaborators per project need Pro or an organizational arrangement.

Pros and cons

Pros: Visual and code editing modes serve collaborators with different LaTeX comfort levels; free academic and CV templates shorten setup; simultaneous editing, comments, and chat keep coauthoring in the document; unlimited projects are included across plans; ISO/IEC 27001:2022 certification and an Organizations option with FedRAMP Li-SaaS authorization address formal security requirements.
Cons: Free is limited to one collaborator per project; Student and Standard stop at 10 collaborators, so larger groups need Pro; version history is limited; Google Drive supports import rather than direct synchronization; custom pricing for all paid plans makes cost comparison difficult.

Alternatives

For a free, open-source option with desktop, web, and self-hosted versions across Windows, macOS, and Linux, consider JianTeX. If you need mobile access and want a free tier with explicit caps of two local projects, two cloud projects, and two documents per project, VerbTeX is another option. TeXstudio is a free GPL v2 editor for Windows, Linux, and macOS. For a web editor whose free plan includes unlimited projects, collaborators, compile time, and compile speed, consider Prism. TeXposit offers a free web plan with unlimited projects and collaborators, full version history, and no compile timeouts. If browser-local projects, no signup, and export to .tex or PDF suit your workflow, consider 8gwifi LaTeX Editor. See other LaTeX Editors, Writing Apps, and Document Collaboration Software as well.

Verdict

Choose Overleaf if you want a dedicated LaTeX workspace where coauthors can edit, comment, and discuss a document together, with templates for common academic work. Its unlimited projects and flexible editing modes make it useful across solo and group workflows, but the free collaborator cap, custom-priced paid tiers, and limited version history are meaningful tradeoffs. Look elsewhere if your team needs a deep revision record, direct Google Drive synchronization, or a free plan that supports several collaborators.
