Overview

PaddleOCR is an open-source OCR and document-processing toolkit for developers and teams turning images and PDFs into searchable text or structured data. It is best suited to people building multilingual document workflows who want control over deployment; readers looking for a ready-made desktop scanning app should look elsewhere.

Its breadth is a strength: text and handwriting recognition sit alongside structure extraction, APIs, and several deployment routes. The trade-off is that it is a toolkit with a version-compatibility wrinkle, not a simple drop-in upgrade: code written for PaddleOCR 2.x may not run on 3.x.

Key features

Multilingual recognition: PaddleOCR-VL supports document parsing in 109 languages, while PP-OCRv6 supports 50 languages in one model. The distinction matters: the 109-language figure applies to document parsing, not the PP-OCRv6 model.
Handwriting recognition: PaddleOCR 3.0 supports handwriting OCR, extending its usefulness beyond printed forms and pages. No handwriting accuracy figures are established, so teams with demanding recognition requirements should validate their own documents.
Document structure and tables: PP-StructureV3 turns complex PDFs and document images into Markdown and JSON while preserving structure. Table extraction is supported as well, making this more suitable for downstream document workflows than a text-only OCR tool.
Information extraction: PP-ChatOCRv4 extracts key information from large document collections and integrates ERNIE 4.5. That expands the project beyond page-by-page recognition for collection-level processing.
Integration and operations: Models can be used online through the official website or called through an API. Asynchronous processing is supported, and SDKs are available for Python, TypeScript, and Go. MCP and Skills services include official Agent Skills.
Deployment breadth: Documentation covers local, C++, service, Android, iOS, browser, and other deployments. Support for Kunlunxin, Ascend, and other domestic hardware gives infrastructure teams additional deployment options.
Open ecosystem: The permissive open-source license allows use, modification, distribution, sublicensing, and sale without restriction. PaddleOCR is also used in projects including Umi-OCR, OmniParser, MinerU, and RAGFlow. GitHub Issues is the support channel; OCR courses are offered through AIStudio, and PaddleOCR OCEAN is an open alliance for OCR and document-intelligence partners.

Pricing

PaddleOCR is free under its open-source license, with no restriction on commercial use stated in the license terms. For hosted access, the Official API Free Tier has custom pricing and allows up to 20,000 pages of document parsing per day. The stated monthly page limit is 20,000 pages; teams planning sustained high volume should account for that cap rather than assume the daily allowance resets into an unlimited monthly quota.

The open-source route suits teams able to manage their own deployment and infrastructure. The official API is the lower-setup option for users who want online or API access without running the models themselves, but its free allowance is capped. No paid API tier or overage terms are established.

Platforms

Documentation covers Android and iOS, as well as local, C++, service, and browser deployments. PaddleOCR is not limited to a single operating system or hosted interface, but using that flexibility may require developer and infrastructure work.

Who it's for

PaddleOCR fits developers, product teams, and organizations building document capture or extraction pipelines across languages and deployment environments. It is particularly compelling when structured output, tables, handwriting, or integration with existing services matters. It is less suitable for someone who wants a straightforward consumer scanning application, or for a team that cannot absorb migration work when moving code from 2.x to 3.x.

Pros and cons

Pro: Broad document capabilities combine multilingual OCR, handwriting support, tables, and structure-preserving Markdown and JSON output.
Pro: A permissive license and deployment coverage from local and service use to mobile and browser deployments give teams room to choose their operating model.
Pro: The official API free allowance reaches 20,000 pages per day, useful for substantial evaluation or eligible workloads.
Con: Existing PaddleOCR 2.x code may fail on 3.x, so upgrading can require compatibility work.
Con: The broad deployment and integration choices favor technical teams; they do not amount to a turnkey end-user scanning app.
Con: The stated monthly page limit is also 20,000, which can constrain workloads that need consistent high-volume API processing.
