Overview

Patreon is a publishing and membership platform for creators who want to share work with an audience and earn through subscriptions or digital sales. It suits podcasters, video creators, musicians, artists, and game developers who want free publishing alongside paid access. Its breadth is useful, but the 10% platform fee plus possible payment and other charges can materially affect earnings.

Key features

Creators can offer monthly or annual subscriptions, membership tiers, one-time payments, and digital shops, while also sharing work for free and adding paid options later. That mix works well for creators still building an audience or testing different ways to earn. Free trials, discounts, sales, analytics, insights, and discovery tools support audience growth, though the percentage-based platform fee rises with income.

Publishing covers audio, images, rich text, native video, and livestreaming. Individual livestream sessions can run for up to 12 continuous hours, enough for typical broadcasts but not an uninterrupted day-long stream. Community tools include chats, direct messages, comments, newsletters, and exportable email lists. Creators can set up to 10 chat spaces and control access for all members, paying members, or selected tiers.

Podcast tools support importing and syncing shows, managing multiple podcasts, Spotify, Synced Feeds, and RSS. Integrations and partners include Vimeo, Discord, ConvertKit, Discourse, Wix, and Zapier. Patreon also handles chargebacks, disputes, and fraud, and manages most applicable tax collection and remittance. It supports 16 or more currencies for payments and payouts and says it uses TLS, HTTPS, two-factor authentication, and CAPTCHA checks. Creators relying on API v1 should plan for its scheduled end on October 7, 2026, and move integrations to API v2.

Pricing

Patreon is free to start: the Free to start plan is free, and creators pay when they begin earning. The Standard Patreon pricing plan also is free, with monthly and annual subscriptions, membership tiers, and one-time payments; its cost is 10% of income earned on Patreon, plus payment processing, currency conversion, payout fees, and applicable taxes. This is a low-friction way to begin, but not a low-fee option once revenue arrives.

Standard has custom pricing and includes up to 100 hours per month of video hosting if the creator has paying fans. Patreon also describes its platform fee as 10% of income, plus applicable fees and taxes. Payment processing, currency conversion, payout fees, and applicable taxes may add to the total, so creators should account for more than the platform percentage when setting prices.

Platforms

Patreon is available on the web, iOS, Android, and through an API. A mobile app supports creators and members on the go, while the API offers integration options; API v1 is scheduled to stop working on October 7, 2026, with integrations directed to API v2.

Who it's for

Patreon is a strong fit for independent creators who want a single place to publish different media, cultivate a community, and combine free access with recurring or one-time payments. It is especially relevant to podcasters, video creators, musicians, artists, and game developers. Creators who need to keep fees low as income grows, or whose livestreams must exceed 12 continuous hours, should consider alternatives.

Pros and cons

Pros: Multiple content formats, free publishing, memberships, one-time payments, and shops let creators build a varied offer without separating every activity across platforms.
Pros: Chats, direct messages, comments, newsletters, and exportable email lists give creators several ways to maintain audience contact, with chat access configurable by membership.
Pros: Patreon handles chargebacks, disputes, fraud, and most applicable tax collection and remittance, reducing operational work for creators.
Cons: The 10% platform fee is joined by possible processing, currency conversion, payout, and tax charges, making total costs higher than the headline fee.
Cons: Livestreams are capped at 12 continuous hours and creators can create no more than 10 chat spaces, limits that may constrain unusually large or complex communities.
Cons: API v1 is scheduled to stop working on October 7, 2026, so integrations using it need to move to API v2.

Alternatives

Substack is worth considering for creators who prefer a free-to-start service with no platform fees, tiers, or contracts. For a membership site with a stated free plan and a paid option from $18.00 USD per month, consider Appy Pie Membership Website Builder; its paid plan includes a custom domain and payment integration.

Raklet may suit a smaller organization that can work within its free plan’s 100 contacts, one admin seat, and 1,250 free emails per month. Paid Memberships Pro is an option for readers seeking a self-hosted, open-source core plugin and add-ons that can run on as many sites as desired.

memberplanet offers a Basic plan with unlimited members and admins, while its Essentials plan costs 50.00 USD per month and includes a 2% platform fee. Ghost is a paid alternative for solo blogs and newsletters: its Starter plan is 18.00 USD per month, billed yearly, and includes 1,000 members and one staff user.

Systeme.io suits creators who want a free plan with 2,000 contacts, three sales funnels, one course, one blog, and one custom domain. Uscreen is a paid alternative with a Starter plan at 49.00 USD per month, including 100 subscribers and 20 hours of video storage.

Verdict

Choose Patreon if you are a creator who wants publishing, community, and several earning formats together, with the ability to start free and introduce paid access later. Its strongest case is that range, backed by tools for payments and audience engagement. Look elsewhere if minimizing fees is central to your model or you need livestreams longer than 12 hours.
