Overview

Plane combines automated contractor payments with accounts where contractors can submit payment requests and check their status. Support for 240+ countries and 70+ local currencies gives globally distributed teams broad payment coverage, and the plan does not require contractors to use an e-wallet.

Beyond payments, Plane handles contract and tax administration, expense approvals and accounting workflows. The combination can reduce the number of separate systems a finance or HR team needs to coordinate. Its free HRIS plan offers a way to manage onboarding and worker records, but it does not include the paid plan’s contractor payment and tax capabilities.

Key features

Payments and contractor accounts: Companies can automate payments, while contractors can request payments and check their status. Broad country and currency coverage suits cross-border teams; companies with only domestic contractors may have less reason to pay for that reach.
Contracts and tax documents: Plane provides localized contract templates reviewed by US and local lawyers, while allowing customers to use their own contracts. It collects W-8 and W-9 forms and prepares and files 1099 forms, covering practical compliance work alongside payment administration.
Classification advice: Plane’s experts can advise whether a worker should be hired as an employee or contractor. This supports hiring decisions but does not replace the company’s responsibility for how it engages workers.
Expenses and accounting: Employees and contractors can submit expenses for approval and reimbursement. QuickBooks Online integration prepares and exports journal entries, making it most useful to teams already using that accounting product.
Developer access: An open API, CLI and MCP access offer options for custom workflows, and sandbox access is included on every plan. This is a meaningful benefit for teams planning integrations, not a substitute for the contractor plan’s paid features.
Security and support: Plane says it has SOC 2 Type I compliance and complies with GDPR and CCPA. It provides 24/5 human support to employees and contractors by email, chat and Slack.

Pricing

Plane uses a freemium model. The HRIS Platform plan costs 0.00 USD per month, billed at $0 per person per month. It includes guided hiring and onboarding with tasks, a contractor and employee directory, custom reports, holidays and time tracking. It suits teams that need these HRIS functions without paid contractor management, but it does not include the listed contractor payment and tax features.

The Contractors plan costs 39.00 USD per month, billed at $39 per person per month. It includes payments in 240+ countries and 70+ local currencies, no e-wallet requirement, W-8 and W-9 collection, 1099 filing and health insurance availability. Pricing is month-to-month, applies only to active contractors, and carries no signup or cancellation fees. The active-contractor billing and flexible term help contain commitment, but $39 per contractor each month can add up for large rosters.

Platforms

Plane is available on the web and through an API. Developer access also includes CLI and MCP, with sandbox access on every plan.

Who it's for

Plane suits companies managing international contractors that want payments, paperwork, expenses and employee administration together, especially if they use QuickBooks Online or need developer access. It is less compelling for organizations with few cross-border needs or large contractor populations focused mainly on minimizing per-person costs.

Pros and cons

Pro: Payments across 240+ countries and 70+ currencies, with no e-wallet needed, support a wide range of international contractor arrangements.
Pro: Contracts, tax forms, expenses and payment workflows share one platform, reducing the need to coordinate those tasks across separate tools.
Pro: Month-to-month billing only for active contractors avoids paying for inactive seats or accepting a long-term term.
Con: The $39 per-person monthly contractor price is a significant ongoing cost as the contractor roster grows.
Con: The free HRIS plan does not include the paid contractor payment and tax features, so teams needing those workflows must budget for the Contractors plan.

Verdict

Plane is a sound choice for companies paying international contractors that want payment operations, tax documents, contracts and expenses under one roof, with an API and accounting integration to support connected workflows. Its global reach and broad administration are the main reasons to choose it; the $39 monthly charge per active contractor is the reason to compare lower-cost options before committing, particularly for a large roster.
