Overview

PhotoFlare CE is the practical entry point: a GPL-licensed editor with basic image tools, filters, and batch processing. PhotoFlare Lens adds a dedicated RAW workflow, and Studio is the full layered editor. Keeping these capabilities in distinct editions lets a light user avoid a heavyweight application, but anyone moving between ordinary edits, RAW adjustments, and compositing may need more than one edition.

Key features

Basic and batch editing

CE covers straightforward corrections and filters, with batch processing for applying work across multiple images. That makes it a sensible utility for routine image preparation and a poor substitute for a full compositing environment.

RAW development

Lens opens RAW files from more than 700 camera models through LibRaw and processes them in 16-bit. Its non-destructive controls include exposure, white balance, tone curves, colour grading, crop, and straighten. Developments are stored in XMP sidecars, leaving the original RAW untouched. Common XMP fields interoperate with Lightroom and darktable, and a one-click handoff sends a Lens-developed image to Studio. This is a credible fit for photographers who want editable RAW decisions without rewriting source files.

Layered work

Studio adds non-destructive layers, blend modes, opacity controls, masks, unlimited undo history per document, and pressure- and tilt-sensitive brushes. OpenRaster is its native layered format; JPEG, PNG, BMP, and TIFF import and export with EXIF preservation. These are the features that make Studio suitable for illustrations, composites, and detailed retouching rather than only quick adjustments.

Connectivity and security

PhotoFlare has no cloud sync, so projects remain local and collaboration requires your own file-sharing process. Studio needs internet access for first activation, then runs offline indefinitely. Its unregistered mode keeps all features available and has no time limit, although saving displays a reminder.

Pricing

Edition	Price and terms	What it includes
PhotoFlare CE	Free and open source; price not listed	Basic image editing tools and batch processing under the GPL
PhotoFlare Lens	Free	RAW support for 700+ camera formats, non-destructive XMP edits, and no account requirement
PhotoFlare Studio	79.00 EUR per month, billed as a one-time purchase with no subscription	Layered editing, up to three machines, and one year of free updates

CE is the choice for basic work and open-source licensing. Lens costs nothing and targets photographers whose priority is RAW development and sidecar-based editing. Studio is for users who need layers, masks, and advanced brushes; its licence covers three machines. Studio can be tried without purchase, with no disabled features or time limit, and the page promises a 14-day, no-questions-asked refund policy. The unusual monthly wording alongside a one-time purchase should be confirmed before checkout.

Platforms

PhotoFlare runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows. It is therefore a practical option for mixed desktop environments, but the absence of cloud sync means files and workflows do not follow you automatically between machines.

Who it's for

Choose CE for quick edits, filters, and batch jobs, especially if GPL software matters. Choose Lens for photographers processing supported camera RAW files who want non-destructive controls and Lightroom/darktable-compatible XMP data. Choose Studio for layered compositions, masked adjustments, and brush-based work across up to three computers. Look elsewhere if browser-first access, mobile editing, or built-in cloud storage is central to your workflow.

Pros and cons

Pros

Three editions let users pay for or install only the level of editing they need.
Lens supports more than 700 camera models and keeps RAW originals unchanged through XMP sidecars.
Studio combines layers, masks, blend modes, pressure and tilt-sensitive brushes, and unlimited per-document undo.
Studio works offline after activation, covers three machines, and includes one year of updates.

Cons

No cloud synchronization means multi-device projects require manual file management.
Studio's price presentation combines “79.00 EUR per month” with a one-time-purchase term, so buyers should verify the charge.
The editions divide capabilities; CE does not provide the RAW and layered toolsets found in Lens and Studio.

Alternatives

For a wider shortlist, see Photo Editing Software.

Adobe Photoshop is the better pick when you need Android, iOS, web, and Windows access alongside desktop support and cloud-storage plans.
Adobe Lightroom suits photographers who want cross-device apps, web access, 1 TB cloud storage, and generative credits.
Retouch4me is for automated retouching workflows with annual credit-based plans.
Photopea is preferable when a browser editor or self-hosted deployment is more important than a native desktop application.
Airbrush targets users seeking portrait and generative image tools with a capped free tier.
ON1 Photo RAW is an alternative for buyers seeking a paid RAW product with optional plans for two or three computers.
Photomator fits an Apple-only workflow spanning Mac, iPad, iPhone, and Apple Vision Pro.
RawTherapee is the stronger choice for a free GPLv3 RAW developer on Linux, macOS, and Windows, though it does not provide digital asset management, printing, or uploading features.

Verdict

PhotoFlare is a good fit for desktop users who want a free basic editor, a capable no-cost RAW developer, or a one-time Studio licence for layered work across three machines. Its non-destructive RAW pipeline, broad camera support, and offline Studio operation are the main reasons to choose it. Choose another platform if cloud synchronization, mobile and web clients, or a single unified edition matters more than local control.
