Overview

PhotoPad covers the routine work of cropping, rotating, resizing, retouching, and adjusting color and exposure, with blur and sharpening tools for finishing. It also supports RAW editing and formats including JPG, GIF, PNG, TIFF, and BMP. That combination makes it a flexible option for general photo work, though it is less compelling for users whose main need is large-scale panorama stitching.

Editing is non-destructive: effects can be undone, reordered, and revisited in a layers list. This is useful when refining a series of adjustments, since changes need not be treated as final. PhotoPad supports wide panoramas and HDR or exposure blending, but projects are capped at eight images, a material constraint for more ambitious stitching.

Key features

Alongside image correction, PhotoPad can create collages, photo mosaics, calendars, greeting cards, and photo montages. Those options suit occasional personal and print-oriented projects without requiring a separate tool for every output. The trade-off is breadth over specialization: the listed capabilities span many tasks, but do not make PhotoPad a dedicated panorama or AI editor.

The maker lists AI-assisted super-resolution resizing, object removal, background removal, and colorizing black-and-white photos. These extend the toolkit beyond manual adjustments, while the core correction tools remain useful for users who do not need AI features. Edited images can also be uploaded directly to Twitter, Flickr, Dropbox, OneDrive, or Google Drive, a practical convenience for sharing or moving finished work.

Pricing

PhotoPad uses a freemium model. The Free plan costs 0.00 USD per free and is restricted to non-commercial use; no signup is required. That makes it suitable for personal projects, but not for work done on behalf of a business or other commercial use.

The maker also offers Home Edition Annual Plan, described as unlimited use but licensed for non-business use only, and Pro Edition Annual Plan, described as having no restrictions with a single-location license. The Pro Edition Quarterly Plan includes unlimited ongoing use of professional-version features and all upgrades. These are options for users who need a paid license or professional features, but their prices are custom pricing. The Pro License also has custom pricing.

Before choosing a paid edition, note that buyers whose purchase was more than six months ago may need to purchase an upgrade to use the current version. That can affect the longer-term cost of ownership.

Platforms

PhotoPad is listed for Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web, Windows, and as an extension. Desktop system requirements are Windows 7 to 11 or macOS 10.5 and later. NCH offers email support; telephone and live chat are listed for customers with Platinum support.

Who it's for

PhotoPad is a sensible fit for home editors who need routine corrections, RAW support, and creative outputs such as cards or collages in one tool. Its non-destructive effects and direct upload destinations add flexibility for users who revise and share their images. The free edition is a reasonable starting point for non-commercial use, but the eight-image cap rules it out for larger panorama projects, and commercial users need a license that permits their use.

Pros and cons

Pros: It combines everyday adjustments, RAW editing, and a broad set of creative project types, reducing the need to switch tools for casual use.
Pros: Non-destructive effects can be undone, reordered, or edited later, which supports iterative work.
Pros: AI-assisted resizing, object and background removal, and colorizing add optional ways to alter images.
Cons: The free edition is non-commercial only, so business use requires a different license.
Cons: The eight-image project ceiling limits PhotoPad for larger panorama stitching.
Cons: The paid plans have custom pricing, and older buyers may need to pay for an upgrade to use the current version.

Alternatives

For a broader panorama-focused shortlist, see Panorama Stitching Software; for general editing options, browse Photo Editing Software or AI Photo Editors.

Choose Hugin if a free, open-source panorama tool is the priority. PTGui is a paid alternative with a trial and support for Linux, macOS, and Windows; its personal Pro license is a one-time payment and can be activated on up to two computers simultaneously. PANOVOLO is worth considering when a perpetual license and no image-count limit matter; its full license costs 39.99 USD per once and supports up to two computers simultaneously.

Panoweaver is another paid panorama option with a free trial. PanoramaStudio is a paid option for macOS and Windows with a free trial, while WidsMob Panorama offers a Windows one-month license at 15.99 USD per month. 3DVista Stitcher is a paid macOS and Windows alternative with a free trial. For portrait-focused editing, consider ON1 Portrait AI, a paid macOS and Windows product with a free trial.

Verdict

Choose PhotoPad if you want one broadly equipped editor for personal photo correction, RAW editing, and creative projects, with non-destructive adjustments and optional AI tools. Look elsewhere if you need commercial use from the free edition or plan panorama projects that exceed eight images.
