Overview

Planning Center brings church administration and ministry workflows together as a set of connected products. It is most compelling for churches that want to coordinate records, worship, events, and other activities in one environment, rather than buy a tool for only one task. Its broad scope is a strength, but the Services cost scales with the number of people accessing it.

Formed in 2006 by Jeff Berg and Aaron Stewart, the company is headquartered in Carlsbad, California. Planning Center says its products suit churches from small neighborhood congregations to multi-campus organizations. The freemium model includes free product plans, paid plans from $5/mo, and a 30-day trial.

Key features

People and ministry records

People keeps membership information alongside attendance, giving, and volunteering activity. That shared record can help churches keep track of participation without splitting those details across separate lists. The free People plan includes an unlimited database and reporting, making it a strong starting point for recordkeeping; churches should still weigh the costs of any other products they need.

Worship planning and volunteer coordination

Services covers worship preparation, volunteer scheduling, team communication, and rehearsal tools. Its plans include unlimited feature access, teams, service types, and plans, so the key pricing variable is the number of people who access the system. That model suits churches whose needs are defined by a known group of users, but growing access can mean a higher plan cost.

Connected tools and integrations

The broader platform covers events, donations, groups, and church apps as well as people management and worship planning. Listed integrations include SongSelect, PraiseCharts, Checkr, Mailchimp, and Zapier; an open API provides another route for connecting third-party tools. Group management, event registration, child check-in, SMS messaging, and volunteer scheduling are also supported capabilities.

Security and support

Planning Center states that it is SOC 2 Type 2 certified and PCI Level One compliant, encrypts data in transit and at rest, and uses a multilayered backup strategy. Support is free for customers and noncustomers, with a stated response time of about one business hour on weekdays and a weekend crew for emergencies. Those commitments are relevant to churches handling sensitive member and giving information, though they do not replace evaluating an organization’s own security and support requirements.

Pricing

Planning Center uses a freemium model. Calendar is free at no cost for one room; it is a useful no-cost fit for a congregation that only needs that limited calendar setup. People is free with an unlimited database and reporting, a notably generous entry point for managing records. Services is free for five team members and 100MB of storage, a modest allowance for a small team trying worship planning before expanding.

Paid plans start at $5/mo, and Planning Center offers a 30-day trial. The stated 75-member limit is another threshold to check when choosing a plan. For Services specifically, pricing depends on the number of people accessing the system even though feature access, teams, service types, and plans are unlimited. Accounts continue to work after exceeding a plan limit; if the limit is exceeded more than once, the organization receives an upgrade suggestion. That avoids an immediate interruption, but repeated overages signal that the current plan may no longer fit.

For churches relying on Services in the field, mobile compatibility matters: its app supports iOS and Android phones and tablets, not Windows devices.

Platforms

Planning Center supports Android, iOS, web, and API access. The Services app works on iOS and Android phones and tablets; Windows devices are not compatible with that app.

Who it's for

Planning Center is a good fit for churches that want member activity, worship planning, volunteer coordination, and adjacent ministry operations within one platform. Smaller congregations can begin with the free product plans, while multi-campus churches may value the breadth of workflows and integrations. It is less suitable for an organization that needs Windows compatibility for Services or wants predictable Services pricing independent of user count.

Pros and cons

Broad ministry coverage: People, Services, events, donations, groups, and church apps address more than a single operational need.
Useful free entry points: Calendar covers one room, People has an unlimited database and reporting, and Services allows five team members with 100MB storage.
Flexible worship plans: Services includes unlimited features, teams, service types, and plans, with user count determining pricing.
Credible stated safeguards and support: The company cites SOC 2 Type 2, PCI Level One, encryption, backups, and free support with a weekday response target.
Services costs can rise with access: Pricing depends on the number of people using it, so expansion may affect the bill.
Windows exclusion for Services: Its mobile app does not support Windows devices.

Verdict

Planning Center is a strong choice for churches that want connected tools for people records, worship, and wider ministry operations, with free plans that let teams start small. Its central advantage is breadth across church workflows; its main reasons to look elsewhere are Services pricing tied to access count and the lack of Windows support for the Services app.
