Overview

Created by California attorney David Tussman for his practice and later offered to other attorneys, Tussman Program centers on billing and accounting. It manages clients, matters, time, disbursements, bills, and account records, with trust accounting, matter-level billing, and client ledgers. That focus suits firms looking to keep financial workflows together, but it is not positioned as a broad practice-management suite.

Key features

Billing and general ledger

Time entry includes a timer, while billing covers retainers and trust accounts, customizable bill formats, payment plans, and reports. The General Ledger supports checkwriting, client cost and receipt posting, check registers, financial statements, vendor lists, and office payables. This is a meaningful range for a firm wanting legal billing and office accounting in one program; practices needing only basic invoicing may not benefit from the accounting depth.

Calendar and add-on modules

The Docket/Calendar module tracks appointments, tasks, and reminders, and can create event series triggered by a master event. Additional-cost modules provide electronic billing formats such as LEDES, Litigation Advisor, and Tymetrix, and imports from Amicus, TimeMatters, Equitrak, and Copitrak. A Local Area Network module also costs extra and enables simultaneous access for multiple users, with individual IDs, passwords, and configurable access rights. Those charges matter most to firms that need integrations or shared access rather than a single-user setup.

Hosting and support

The maker offers cloud hosting for a monthly fee that includes program support and updates, and says hosted data is backed up. Purchase includes six months of unlimited phone support. After that, an optional annual support contract provides unlimited phone support, minor upgrades, and a 50% discount on major upgrades; support is not provided without a current contract. Firms should weigh that continuing requirement alongside the full program's custom pricing.

Pricing

The Free Version is free, with no time limit, and is capped at 5 clients and 10 matters. It is a practical starting point for a very small practice or an evaluation, but those caps make it unsuitable once a firm grows beyond them. Data entered in the free version can be retained when upgrading.

The Full Tussman Program has custom pricing; contact Tussman for pricing and ordering information. It is the relevant option for firms that outgrow the free caps, but the price must be established directly. A free trial is offered. The six-month phone-support inclusion and requirement for a current contract thereafter are important ongoing terms.

Platforms

Tussman Program is desktop software for macOS and Windows. Cloud hosting is offered for a monthly fee, but firms seeking a web, mobile, or Linux-native platform should consider other options.

Who it's for

Choose Tussman Program if your practice needs client- and matter-based billing, trust accounting, general-ledger functions, and calendar tasks in a desktop system. It is a particularly clear fit for an attorney or small firm that can begin within the free version's caps. Firms requiring simultaneous multi-user access should budget for the network module, while practices needing a different platform or fully specified costs should compare alternatives first.

Pros and cons

Pros

Broad legal-finance coverage: billing, trust accounts, client ledgers, and general-ledger tasks are brought into one program.
Useful no-cost starting tier: the free version has no time limit, and its data can be retained when upgrading.
Calendar automation: event series can be triggered by a master event, beyond basic appointment and reminder tracking.

Cons

Small free-version caps: 5 clients and 10 matters limit its usefulness for a growing or larger practice.
Extra charges for shared access and integrations: firms needing a network or supported billing formats and imports must account for add-on costs.
Support depends on an active contract: the initial six months do not remove the need for a current contract to receive support afterward.
Desktop platform scope: the listed platforms are macOS and Windows, which may not suit firms seeking mobile or browser-based access.

Alternatives

Compare legal accounting software if you want to consider a broader set of options. BarBooks is worth considering for firms seeking Android, iOS, or web access; its Enterprise plan has custom pricing. Choose CosmoLex instead if you want a paid plan with a stated entry price: Launch is 49.00 USD per month per user and includes time tracking, invoicing, online payments, trust accounting, and ledgers. LexNebulis is the alternative to consider for a free, open-source, self-hosted option. Account Legal offers a 19.94 USD per month plan with unlimited access, multiple trust accounts, unlimited clients, and downloadable client and account reports, making it worth comparing if those stated limits and reports fit your needs. IOLTA Guard is a web option with paid plans priced at 99.00 USD per month for one user and one bank account, or 199.00 USD per month for three users and three bank accounts. Lexis+, Orion ePay, and PerfectLaw DMS are other alternatives to compare.

Verdict

Tussman Program is a good fit for a small legal practice seeking billing, trust accounting, general-ledger work, and calendar tasks in one desktop product, especially if the free caps are sufficient to start. Its main reason to choose it is the concentration of legal-finance functions; its main reasons to look elsewhere are custom full-program pricing, paid modules for network access and integrations, and ongoing support tied to a current contract.
