Overview

Publii keeps drafts and site data on your computer until you publish or connect an external service, and the desktop app does not collect telemetry or usage statistics. That gives privacy-conscious publishers control over the authoring stage. A finished site's privacy still depends on its hosting, analytics, forms, embedded media and other services, which may process visitor data.

Published sites do not need a publicly accessible database, PHP or a public Publii admin panel. That makes Publii a considered option for site owners seeking to reduce server-side components. It can publish through GitHub Pages, GitLab Pages, Netlify, Amazon S3, Google Cloud, FTP or SFTP, or via manual deployment. The choice of destination is useful, but requires the site owner to configure and manage an external hosting route.

Key features

Writing and content management

Block, WYSIWYG and Markdown editors accommodate different writing styles. Posts can include image galleries, video, downloadable files, tables and syntax highlighting, with authors, tags and writing statistics for organizing and tracking content. WordPress WXR/XML import brings in posts, pages, custom post types as posts, images and authors, which can ease a move from WordPress while leaving the publishing workflow local.

Search visibility, performance and privacy

Publii generates semantic static HTML and provides metadata settings, sitemaps, structured data and social previews. Lazy loading, minification and WebP conversion address page weight and image delivery. These built-in tools cover common site needs, while plugins extend the app with analytics, search, comments, SEO and GEO tools, galleries, icons, image decoding controls and third-party integrations.

Cookie consent groups, controls for embedded content and scripts, and Google Consent Mode v2 integration give publishers ways to manage consent behavior. They do not determine the privacy impact of every site configuration; external services and hosting remain part of that picture.

Pricing

Publii — free. The desktop CMS is free and open source under GPL-3.0. That suits individuals and small publishers who want to avoid a software subscription. Paid themes, plugins, hosting, domains and external services may add costs, so the software's free price does not make the complete site cost-free.

There are no paid Publii software plans to compare. The practical trade-off is that users choose and arrange their own publishing destination, and may pay separately for site components or services. The product runs on Linux, macOS and Windows, making it usable across the major desktop platforms.

Platforms

Publii is a desktop application for Linux, macOS and Windows. It supports custom domains, and theme customization can use custom code. Its static output and deployment options suit owners who want control over hosting, but readers seeking a hosted, centrally managed publishing service may prefer a different approach.

Who it's for

Publii fits bloggers, portfolio owners, documentation writers and other publishers whose sites are primarily content-focused. Its varied editors help accommodate both visual and Markdown workflows, while local drafts, WordPress import and the publishing choices support people building or moving a site on their own terms.

It is a weaker fit for publishers who need scheduled posts or built-in memberships: Publii provides neither. Teams should also consider whether a desktop-centered workflow and responsibility for external hosting match how they want to collaborate and operate a site.

Pros and cons

Pros: Three editor styles and broad content tools support different writing workflows without requiring a hosted authoring platform.
Pros: Multiple publishing routes, custom domains and custom-code theme customization give site owners room to choose how their site is hosted and presented.
Pros: Static output avoids a publicly accessible database, PHP and a public Publii admin panel on the published site.
Pros: Local data handling and no desktop telemetry give authors more control over drafts and app usage data.
Cons: No post scheduling or built-in memberships limits its fit for publication calendars and membership sites.
Cons: Hosting and external services require separate configuration and may add cost; those services can also affect visitor privacy.
Cons: The desktop app is available on Linux, macOS and Windows, so it does not provide a browser-based authoring platform.

Alternatives

Consider Static site generators for a broader category comparison, or Blogging Platforms, Content Management Systems and Website builders if you are weighing different kinds of publishing tools.

Gatsby is another free option, with an open-source framework and a separate free plan that has a 300-credit monthly limit. Choose Eleventy if you want a free, MIT-licensed, self-hosted static-site generator. Cecil is free software under the EUPL-1.2 license, while Nanoc is a free passion project.

Bridgetown is another free option. Nikola is free, open-source software under the MIT license and requires Python 3.8 or later. Hugo is an open-source option that is free to use. Metalsmith is free software under the MIT/(L)GPL licenses.

Verdict

Choose Publii if you want a free desktop CMS with local content management, a choice of editors and several ways to publish a static site. Its security-conscious static output and authoring privacy are compelling for independent content-focused sites. Look elsewhere if scheduled publishing, built-in memberships or a hosted, centrally managed workflow is essential.
