Overview

The service runs the relevant GOV.UK check for a right-to-work or right-to-rent share code and returns the answer as JSON. Responses can include the outcome, dates, conditions, applicant photo and GOV.UK PDF, with an audit trail for record-keeping. Right-to-work checks are intended for UK employers, recruitment agencies and hiring platforms; right-to-rent checks serve landlords and letting agents in England and apply to every adult tenant.

The home page allows two live checks per day without an account, which gives occasional users a way to try the service. The maker says it is not affiliated with HM Government, the Home Office or GOV.UK: it is a route to running the corresponding government check, not a government-operated product.

Key features

API and callbacks

API access is useful for teams that want checks within an existing hiring or rental workflow instead of handling every check separately. Asynchronous checks can post signed results to a callback URL, and this works on every plan, including sandbox. Documentation includes cURL, Node.js and Python examples; Node.js use does not require an SDK. Rate limits vary by plan, so the right tier depends partly on how quickly checks need to be submitted.

Data handling and procurement

Live check inputs and GOV.UK pages are retained for up to seven days to investigate failed or disputed checks, then deleted automatically. That short window limits retention, but teams needing longer access should account for their own record-keeping requirements. The maker says customer and applicant data is processed in the UK and EEA, with no transfers outside those regions during a check. API keys are stored as SHA-256 hashes, traffic uses TLS, and Stripe handles card data rather than the service storing it on its servers. A published data processing agreement and countersignable PDF support procurement review.

Pricing

The Free plan is free and includes 10 live checks a month, a sandbox key and a limit of five requests a second. It has no card requirement, but the hard stop at 10 makes it suitable for low-volume use or evaluation, not a workflow that must continue past its monthly allowance.

Pro costs £14.00 per month, billed £14/month, and includes 100 live checks monthly. Additional checks cost £0.25 each, and the rate limit rises to 20 requests a second; email support is from Matthew. It is the entry paid tier for modest recurring volume, though overages can add up if usage exceeds the quota.

Scale costs £49.00 per month, billed £49/month, for 500 live checks monthly, then £0.10 per check, with a 50-request-per-second limit. Its lower overage rate makes it better suited to higher or less predictable volume than Pro, but the monthly fee is higher.

Enterprise has custom pricing and is invoiced monthly. It offers volume-based rates, an SLA, a named contact, a signed DPA and higher rate limits, making it the tier to consider when standard quotas or support arrangements do not fit.

Platforms

The service is available on the web and through an API. This pairing serves teams that need a browser-based option alongside integration into software; the published cURL, Node.js and Python examples support implementation work.

Who it's for

Right To Work Checker fits UK employers, recruiters and hiring platforms that need share-code checks in a hiring process, as well as landlords and letting agents in England checking every adult tenant. The API and signed callbacks are particularly relevant when a team wants results delivered into an asynchronous workflow. Users who need more than 10 live checks a month must move beyond Free, and those with substantial volume should compare the overage costs of Pro and Scale.

Pros and cons

Pros: Signed callbacks are included even on sandbox, enabling asynchronous integrations from the start.
Pros: Free includes 10 live checks monthly without requiring a card, while the home page also offers two daily checks without signup.
Pros: UK/EEA processing, automatic deletion after up to seven days, and a countersignable DPA provide concrete data-handling and procurement provisions.
Cons: Free stops at 10 live checks a month, so it cannot cover ongoing use above that cap.
Cons: Paid plans charge for checks beyond their quotas, at £0.25 each on Pro and £0.10 each on Scale.
Cons: The seven-day retention window may not suit teams that need the service itself to retain check inputs or government pages for longer.

Verdict

Right To Work Checker is a strong fit for UK hiring and rental teams that want share-code checks embedded in an API workflow, especially those that value signed callbacks and a low-cost entry tier. Its main constraint is predictable usage: Free stops at 10 checks, while paid tiers charge for overages. Choose it when those limits and the seven-day retention window suit your workflow; look elsewhere if your volume, retention needs or preferred checking process do not fit.
