Overview

TreeSize is a Windows desktop tool for analyzing how files and folders use storage across local, removable, network, and cloud locations. It suits private users, IT professionals, and consultants who need to locate large files or produce reports. Its main advantage is the choice of visual analysis, cleanup, and reporting tools; the right edition depends on whether the work is personal, commercial, or server-based.

All editions operate on-premise, and JAM Software says data stays on the computer or site and is not shared with third parties. That is a useful fit for organizations that want storage analysis without sending scan data to an external service. For more options, see Disk Space Analyzers.

Key features

See what is using space

TreeSize scans files and folders on local drives, network shares, cloud storage, USB drives, SD cards, and external hard drives. A treemap helps surface large space users visually, while file-type breakdowns show which kinds of content account for storage use. This range makes it more useful than a local-drive-only scanner for people managing storage across different targets, though the desktop editions run on Windows.

Reports and recurring scans

Scan results can be exported to PDF, Excel, CSV, HTML, and SQLite, with formats depending on edition. Professional adds custom PDF, Excel, and HTML exports, command-line parameters, task scheduling, scheduled scans, and automated reporting. Those features make it the stronger choice for IT staff who need repeatable reporting; they are more capability than a private user needs for an occasional cleanup.

Cleanup tools

TreeSize can delete, move, bulk-rename, and archive files, as well as find duplicates and deduplicate them. Personal includes duplicate-file search and deduplication, alongside filters for the largest files and comparisons of disk usage over time. These tools turn analysis into action, but users should choose a paid edition if they need them for commercial work rather than relying on Free's private-use scope.

Pricing

TreeSize uses a freemium model. Free is free for private, non-commercial use on Windows desktop systems; it cannot be used on Windows Servers. Its restrictions make it suitable for personal use, not business storage work or server scanning.

Personal is billed annually at 20.40 € per user and includes a 14-day free trial. It is aimed at advanced users, smaller businesses, and freelancers, with largest-file filtering, duplicate search and deduplication, and disk-usage comparisons over time. A perpetual model is also available, but a price is not provided. Personal is the lower-cost paid route, but it does not include Professional's server scanning and scheduled reporting.

Professional is billed annually from 40.80 € per user, with a 14-day free trial. It adds disk-space analysis, duplicate and large-file finding, command-line and task-scheduler options, and custom PDF, Excel, and HTML exports. It fits IT professionals managing storage in-house, particularly where scans and reports need to run on a schedule. Certain Professional plans offer unlimited user licenses.

The Consultant License is billed annually at 240.00 € per user and includes a 14-day free trial. It is designed for service providers who need portable use, reusable reporting and automation, and use across multiple clients. SpaceObServer Enterprise is billed annually at 504.00 € per instance, with a 45-day free trial, for businesses managing large or distributed networks. The Consultant License covers client work; Enterprise is the option aimed at larger network environments. Both are paid choices, and Enterprise is priced per instance rather than per user.

Platforms

TreeSize desktop editions run on Windows Desktop. Professional supports scanning Windows servers, while Free cannot be used on Windows Servers. Supported storage targets include local and external drives, network shares, and cloud storage; the comparison also includes SharePoint, Google Drive, Amazon S3, Microsoft Azure, Outlook, Linux via SSH, and mobile MTP/WebDAV. Integration availability depends on edition.

Who it's for

TreeSize is a strong fit for Windows users who want to find storage-heavy files and folders, inspect usage by file type, and choose between one-off analysis and scheduled reporting. Free fits private, non-commercial desktop use. Personal suits individuals and smaller businesses needing additional filters, duplicate handling, and usage comparisons; Professional is better for IT teams that scan servers or automate reports. Consultants working across clients should consider the Consultant License, while organizations managing large or distributed networks should look at SpaceObServer Enterprise.

It is not the right fit for someone who needs a Mac desktop edition or wants to use the Free version for commercial work or Windows Server scans.

Pros and cons

Pros: Scans local, removable, network, and cloud storage, giving users more scope than a tool limited to local drives.
Pros: Treemaps, file-type breakdowns, and multiple export formats support both quick investigation and reporting, with more formats available in paid editions.
Pros: Professional's scheduling and automation are useful for recurring IT work rather than repeated manual scans.
Pros: On-premise operation and the stated no-third-party-sharing policy suit organizations that want scan data kept within their computer or site.
Cons: Free is restricted to private, non-commercial Windows desktop use and cannot scan Windows Servers, so it is not a business or server option.
Cons: The desktop editions are Windows-only, ruling them out for users seeking a native Mac desktop tool.
Cons: Reporting and automation capabilities vary by edition, so users who need scheduled reports or custom exports must step up to Professional.

Alternatives

WizTree is worth considering if Mac support matters: it has a free plan and runs on macOS and Windows. Its Individual Supporter Code is 25.00 USD per month, with a perpetual license for personal use; supporter codes do not expire.

FolderSizes may suit a personal or home-network user who wants a perpetual license: its Personal Edition license is 30.00 USD per once. That edition is not available to organizations and comes with lower-priority support.

SizeTrend is another Windows option with a free plan; consider it if local-drive and folder analysis with cleanup and storage recommendations covers your needs.

SpaceMonger is a paid Windows alternative with a free trial.

Disk Analyzer Pro has a free plan and runs on macOS and Windows; its Free Personal Edition includes local-drive usage reports, file and folder deletion, and duplicate-file reports.

StorageRadar is a macOS alternative with a free plan, deep storage scanning, treemap and sunburst views, and local snapshots.

DiskAtlas is another macOS option: its free Community Edition includes an interactive GPU treemap and scanning for a full Mac, home directory, or chosen folders.

Disk Auditor is a free Windows alternative with a portable single executable and exports to CSV, TSV, JSON, Excel, and plain text.

Verdict

Choose TreeSize if you need Windows storage analysis that can scale from private scans to server work, client reporting, or scheduled IT automation. Its broad scan targets and on-premise operation are strong reasons to choose it; look elsewhere if you need a Mac desktop edition, or if Free's non-commercial and no-server limits do not match your work.
