Overview

SafetySkills Direct lets administrators add learners, assign training, and track progress. Its course catalog covers subjects ranging from office ergonomics to weapons of mass destruction and industries including defense and pharmaceuticals, which may suit employers with varied training responsibilities. The breadth does not guarantee a match for every need: not every course is available in every catalog language.

SafetySkills was created in 2007 by GBK, which had been developing environmental, health and safety, and emergency-response training since 1993. The company says its instructional design team reviews courses in response to regulatory and industry changes, including OSHA, DOT, and EPA updates.

Key features

Assignments and completion records

Courses require learners to complete tasks and answer questions correctly before finishing. That competency-based approach asks learners to demonstrate understanding rather than merely record attendance, but it also makes completion dependent on passing the required checks. Administrators can automate assignments, group learners, track online and offline training, create custom reports, and issue certificates bearing a company logo. Audit trails add another layer of recordkeeping.

Course delivery and compatibility

Courses can be launched on mobile devices and tablets, including iPhone, Android, and Windows devices, with progress tracking and certificates retained. That helps organizations whose learners do not always train at a desk. The catalog includes multiple languages, but language coverage varies by course.

SafetySkills content is SCORM- and AICC-compliant and is described as compatible with most leading LMS platforms. Organizations that already run an LMS can therefore consider using its courseware without relying exclusively on Direct. Custom content is also supported.

OSHA-authorized training

OSHA-authorized courses are distributed through the University of South Florida and cost an additional fee per learner, outside the standard catalog. Organizations seeking that training should account for the separate charge rather than assume it is covered by a Direct assignment.

Pricing

SafetySkills Direct

Direct has a free account, and SafetySkills offers one free course each month. Charges apply when a course is assigned; the plan is billed per credit, and assignments consume credits according to the course and learner count. This is a low-barrier way to try the LMS or use occasional training, but organizations assigning courses at scale should budget for variable credit use. The free access does not remove the separate per-learner fee for OSHA-authorized courses.

Direct includes the content library, custom content, automated assignments, online and offline delivery, completion certificates, SCORM support, and an audit trail. A free trial is also offered. Custom pricing is the practical description for a plan whose assignment costs depend on credit use rather than a fixed published subscription.

Platforms

SafetySkills supports Android, iOS, macOS, web, and Windows. Its course delivery information specifically describes mobile and tablet access, including iPhone, Android, and Windows devices, with progress and certificates retained.

Who it's for

SafetySkills is a reasonable fit for employers that need EHS, occupational safety, or emergency-response training alongside assignment controls and completion records. Its broad catalog, automated assignments, reporting, and LMS integrations are most relevant to organizations managing recurring training across groups of learners. Small teams can start with the free account and monthly course, while larger programs should weigh the credit-based assignment costs and course-specific language availability. It is less suitable for buyers who need predictable flat-rate pricing or who require OSHA-authorized courses within the standard catalog.

Pros and cons

Pros: Free account and one free monthly course offer a way to begin without committing to a paid subscription.
Pros: Competency checks, progress tracking, reporting, audit trails, and branded certificates support more than simple course distribution.
Pros: SCORM and AICC compatibility can make the catalog relevant to organizations with an existing LMS.
Cons: Assignment charges vary with course and learner count, making total costs less predictable than a fixed-price plan.
Cons: OSHA-authorized training carries an additional per-learner fee and sits outside the standard catalog.
Cons: Language availability is not uniform across courses, which can constrain multilingual programs.

Verdict

Choose SafetySkills if your organization needs a broad EHS and emergency-response catalog, competency-based course completion, and LMS tools for tracking training across learners. The free entry point and integration support make it practical to explore, but credit-based assignment costs and separately priced OSHA-authorized courses are reasons to look elsewhere if predictable pricing or bundled OSHA training is essential.
