Overview

Shiksha is a higher-education directory for students weighing colleges, courses and exams in India and abroad. It is best suited to applicants building a shortlist and checking admission routes across multiple institutions. Its mix of search, comparison and exam tools is useful, but students should consider how their contact details may be shared when they express interest in a college.

Shiksha.com is part of Info Edge (India) Ltd., launched in 2008 and headquartered in Noida, Uttar Pradesh. Its college profiles cover admissions, eligibility, fees, placements, rankings, reviews, scholarships and accepted exams. Shiksha says it aggregates information from official college, exam-body and ranking-body websites; it is not affiliated with or endorsed by a government organization.

The service describes more than 60,000 institutions and 375,000 courses on its site, while its website-and-app catalog figures cite 50,000+ institutions, 400,000+ courses and 800+ exams. The counts differ, but point to a broad directory rather than a narrowly focused admissions tool.

Key features

College and course discovery

Search covers colleges and courses, with profiles that put fees, admission criteria, placements and other decision points in one place. That breadth can help applicants organize early research; it should not replace checking admission requirements with the institution before making a consequential decision.

Comparison and shortlist tools

Students can compare colleges and courses side by side, read college reviews and use MyShortlist to keep options in view. These tools are most useful when narrowing a large set of possibilities; comparisons are only as helpful as the underlying profile information and the applicant's own priorities.

Exam and admissions guidance

Exam resources include question papers, syllabi and important dates for 600+ exams in the app listing. College and rank predictors use exam scores and historical cutoff trends to estimate possible options or ranks, giving students a starting point rather than a guarantee of admission. Shiksha Assistant counselling recommends colleges using scores, budget, location, profile and preferences, which can help structure a search without deciding for the applicant.

Alumni and student input

College reviews add student perspectives, while Alumni Employment Statistics includes salary data powered by Naukri.com. These can add context to profile research, but they serve different purposes: reviews reflect student accounts, and salary figures are one input into evaluating outcomes.

Privacy and support

Shiksha says it uses physical, electronic and procedural safeguards and seeks compliance with India's Information Technology Act, 2000 and its rules. Its Android listing says data is encrypted in transit and can be deleted on request, but also says the app may share app activity and collect location. Shiksha may share contact information with colleges or educational institutions when a user expresses interest or is shortlisted as a potential admission candidate, a meaningful trade-off for anyone who wants to browse privately.

The privacy policy says users can contact the company to request access, correction, erasure, restricted processing, data portability or withdrawal of consent. It also says Shiksha uses YouTube API services and may track video play, pause and mute actions. The contact page says experts aim to answer questions within 24 hours; Android app support is available at appfeedback@shiksha.com.

Pricing

Shiksha uses a freemium model, with a free plan at no cost. The free offering suits students who want to search, compare colleges and courses, use exam resources and explore the student tools without a subscription. There are no paid plans or feature limits to weigh against the free option, so students should not assume that a particular tool is capped or included in a paid tier.

Platforms

Shiksha is available on the web, Android and iOS. The apps extend college and course search, comparisons, student reviews, exam information, alerts and personalized recommendations to mobile, making it practical for students who want to revisit their shortlist on the go.

Who it's for

Shiksha fits students researching higher education in India or abroad, especially those comparing fees, admissions, placements and exam routes across many institutions. Predictors and counselling recommendations can help applicants organize possibilities around scores and preferences. It is less suitable for anyone who does not want contact information shared with institutions after expressing interest in a college.

Pros and cons

Pros: College profiles combine admissions, fees, placements, rankings, reviews and scholarships, giving shortlist research useful breadth.
Pros: Side-by-side comparisons, predictors, MyShortlist and counselling recommendations support several stages of choosing.
Pros: The free plan and web, Android and iOS access make the core discovery service broadly accessible.
Cons: Expressing interest in a college can lead to contact information being shared with colleges or educational institutions.
Cons: Android users should account for the app's stated collection of location and sharing of app activity.
Cons: The catalog counts differ between Shiksha's site and website-and-app descriptions, so users should verify details for the colleges and courses they are considering.

Alternatives

For a free service with exam alerts, mock tests and college comparison across Android, iOS and web, consider Collegedunia. Choose CollegeDekho if personalized expert counselling for career and course selection is the priority; its free plan is available on Android and web. Whatuni is a free app for students focused on UK universities. For comparing Master's programmes, universities, scholarships, tuition fees and study destinations on the web, Mastersportal is the more targeted option.

CollegeData is a free college-planning service, with some tools requiring a free account. Uni Compare, educations.com and Careers360 are also alternatives. Browse the College Search Platforms directory for more options, or the Study Abroad Platforms directory for international study choices.

Verdict

Choose Shiksha if you want a free, multi-platform starting point for researching and comparing colleges, courses and exams, with predictors and shortlist tools to help organize an application search. Its main advantage is the breadth of decision-support features in one service. Look elsewhere if contact sharing after expressing college interest is a deal-breaker, or if you need a directory focused specifically on UK universities or Master's study.
