Overview

TinyPNG is a lossy image compression service for people who want to shrink and prepare images through a web tool or an API. It is a strong fit for developers and publishers with repeat image workflows, while occasional users can start with the free web allowance. The trade-off is that larger web workloads require a yearly per-user plan, and lossy compression is not right when images must remain untouched.

Key features

Batch processing, resizing and support for JPEG XL, AVIF, WebP, JPG, PNG and APNG make TinyPNG useful for preparing sets of assets in several formats. The service reports reducing file size by more than 85% in a visible-quality comparison; that can matter when storage or delivery size is a concern, but the result is not a guarantee for every image. Metadata handling is flexible: unnecessary data is removed, while the API can retain selected copyright, location and creation-date fields.

The API is suited to recurring or automated workflows, with usage-based charges above its monthly free allowance and no subscription fees or minimum charges. Official WordPress and Figma plugins, plus a beta Zapier integration, provide ways to connect it to publishing, design and automation workflows. Uploaded images are accessible only to their uploader and retained for a maximum of 48 hours.

Pricing

Web Free is free and allows 20 compressions per session, up to 5 MB per image, plus three conversions per session. That is a practical way to handle occasional batches, but repeated sessions or larger files call for an upgrade.

Web Pro has custom pricing, billed yearly per user. It offers unlimited compressions, a 75 MB per-image limit and three conversions per session, so it suits regular compression work but not users who need unlimited conversions. Web Ultra also has custom pricing, billed yearly per user; it raises the image limit to 150 MB and removes the conversion cap alongside unlimited compressions. A Web Pro upgrade to Web Ultra refunds the remaining Web Pro months. Team licenses are sold individually, with one user covered per license for one year.

Developer API Free is free and includes 500 compressions each month without requiring payment details. Unused free compressions reset at the start of each calendar month and do not roll over. Under Developer API Pay Per Compression, the first 500 compressions each month are free, then the next 9,500 cost $0.009 per compression; billing is monthly based on usage, with no subscription fee or minimum charge. The API also offers custom-priced tiers for the first 500 compressions, the next 9,500, and the next 10,000, as well as a 0.00 USD per month volume-pricing plan for the next 10,000 monthly compressions at a discount. The API makes more sense than a yearly web plan for developers whose workload varies, but the monthly free quota does not carry forward.

Platforms

TinyPNG is available as an API, alongside its web service. WordPress and Figma plugins and a beta Zapier integration broaden its workflow options. Contact support, a knowledge base, a blog and a status page provide support resources.

Who it's for

TinyPNG fits people who need batch compression, resizing or conversion, and developers who want to integrate image handling through an API. The free web plan works for light, occasional sessions; Web Pro and Ultra are better suited to ongoing web use at larger file sizes or with more conversion needs. Choose another approach when lossless preservation is essential or when the web session cap does not fit the workload.

Pros and cons

Pros: Broad format support, resizing and batch handling cover several common image-preparation tasks in one service.
Pros: API billing above the monthly free allowance is usage-based, with no subscription fee or minimum charge.
Pros: The API can preserve selected metadata fields, and uploads are restricted to the uploader and retained for at most 48 hours.
Cons: Free web use is capped at 20 compressions and three conversions per session, with a 5 MB limit per image.
Cons: Web Pro and Ultra are yearly per-user plans with custom pricing, and Pro retains a three-conversion session cap.
Cons: Lossy compression may not suit work that requires every image detail to remain unchanged.

Alternatives

Choose JPEGmini if a seven-day Pro trial and use across Linux, macOS, web and Windows suit better; its free plan then continues with limitations and is capped at 50 images per day on one device. Optimole is a better fit for web users who want unlimited images and sites under a free plan capped at 2,000 monthly visits.

Fastly Image Optimizer is another option. MiniPx suits users wanting unlimited compression, conversion and resizing on a forever-free plan, with batches of up to five files and ads. For an API with a stated paid entry tier, ImageCompressAPI offers a 5.00 USD per month Starter plan for 5,000 images monthly.

Kraken.io is an API alternative with a free 100 MB testing quota and a 50.00 USD per year Micro plan. Imagify offers a free API plan with 20 MB monthly, approximately 200 images, a 2 MB per-image limit and unlimited websites. TinyJPG has the same stated Web Free caps and Web Pro limits as TinyPNG, making it an alternative when its separate service is preferable.

Verdict

TinyPNG is a good choice for developers and publishers who need dependable batch-oriented lossy compression, resizing and a usable API, especially when monthly usage can be controlled around the free allowance. Its main reason to look elsewhere is the combination of lossy processing, session-based free web limits and custom-priced annual web upgrades; users who need unchanged image data or clearer web-plan costs should compare other options.
