Overview

The package combines smartctl, which queries storage devices and runs tests, with smartd, which monitors them periodically. That division is practical: use smartctl to inspect a device or investigate a concern, and smartd to keep watch between manual checks. Together, they can provide early warnings of degradation and failure, though no warning system guarantees advance notice of every failure.

A failing SMART health status can mean a device has failed or predicts failure within 24 hours. Treat that result as urgent, and keep backups regardless; monitoring does not protect data by itself.

Key features

Inspection and self-tests

smartctl reports a device’s SMART health status and capabilities, including error logging, offline surface scanning, and estimated self-test duration. It can also show vendor-specific attributes in raw and normalized form. That depth helps users who need to inspect device readings rather than rely on a single status indicator, but it also puts more responsibility on them to interpret the output.

Short, long, and other device self-tests can be started with smartctl, and their results can be read from the self-test log. This makes the package useful for checking a drive directly or following up on a warning, without turning it into a general storage-management tool.

Background monitoring and warnings

smartd periodically checks SMART health, error and self-test logs, and attribute changes; it can report errors and attribute changes to syslog. Its configuration supports scheduled self-tests and monitoring of sectors and temperature, as well as warning email addresses and executable warning commands. These options provide a basis for ongoing checks and alerts, but users must configure the daemon and decide how its warnings should reach them.

Device and system coverage

Support covers ATA/SATA, SCSI/SAS, and NVMe disks, along with SCSI/SAS tape devices. The software should run on modern Linux, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, macOS, Solaris, Windows, Cygwin, OS/2, eComStation, and QNX systems, and can also run from various Live CDs and DVDs. That breadth is valuable in mixed or less common environments; it does not change the fact that smartmontools is centered on SMART inspection and monitoring.

Pricing

Smartmontools is free. The free plan includes the smartctl and smartd utilities and uses the GNU GPL Version 2 license. There is no paid tier to weigh against a reduced-capability free edition: users get the package’s inspection, self-test, and monitoring utilities without a subscription charge.

Platforms

Supported systems include Linux, macOS, Windows, FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, Solaris, OS/2, Cygwin, QNX, and eComStation. It can also run from various Live CDs and DVDs. The range makes it a credible option for users who need SMART tools beyond the most common desktop operating systems.

Who it's for

Choose smartmontools if you are comfortable working with system utilities and configuration, want detailed SMART readings, or need periodic monitoring and configurable warnings across supported systems. It is less suitable if you want a guided interface for drive checks or a broader package for managing storage.

Pros and cons

Broad device support: It covers ATA/SATA, SCSI/SAS, and NVMe disks, as well as SCSI/SAS tape devices.
Detailed inspection: Raw and normalized vendor-specific attributes, logs, capabilities, and self-tests give technically confident users more to examine than a health status alone.
Ongoing checks and alerts: smartd supports scheduled tests, periodic monitoring, and email or executable-command warnings.
Configuration burden: The utility-and-daemon model favors users willing to work with system tools and configuration over those seeking guided desktop checks.
Warnings are not a guarantee: SMART status can signal a serious failure, but monitoring cannot ensure a drive will report trouble in advance or replace backups.

Alternatives

Hard Disk Sentinel is worth considering if its Windows and Linux platform support, free trial, or Linux version better fits your needs; its paid model may matter if you want an option beyond the trial.

DRevitalize may suit someone seeking its older DOS freeware version, while HDAT2 offers a free Windows option for one or more machines, with redistribution limited to use without profit and no warranty.

MHDD is a free alternative for users who specifically want a pure MS-DOS tool supporting IDE, Serial ATA, and SCSI. DiskMaster is another free option for Linux, macOS, and Windows.

HDD Regenerator may be a fit if you want its paid editions: HDD Regenerator 2011 costs 49.99 USD per once, and HDD Regenerator 2024 costs 89.99 USD per once. nvm is a free Node.js version manager rather than a drive-monitoring choice. Macrorit Disk Scanner offers a Windows free edition for scanning a single disk; its Pro + Edition costs 18.95 USD per once for a single computer.

Verdict

smartmontools is a strong choice for technically confident users who want detailed SMART checks, self-tests, and ongoing warnings across varied storage devices and systems, all in a free package. Look elsewhere if you need a guided desktop interface or a broader storage-management experience; its strengths are precision and monitoring, not accessibility or all-purpose management.
