Overview

SpellMe is an online spelling-practice app for learners at home and in classrooms, with tools for parents, homeschoolers and teachers. Its clearest advantage is the range from a usable free tier to adaptive practice and classroom tracking; Story mode and the more extensive AI tools require a paid account.

Key features

Practice and word lists

Regular, Mastery and Story modes give learners different ways to practise, but the account tier determines which are available. Mastery adapts difficulty to performance, and hints can target letters a learner misses. Phonics instruction, dictation and corrective practice add structure beyond repeating a list.

Users can create custom lists or choose from curated phonics and festive lists; the curated library is available to registered users. List limits make the free tier suitable for modest practice, not large or growing vocabularies: Basic allows five lists of up to 10 words each. Advanced removes the list-count cap but limits each list to 20 words, while Premium supports lists of 100 or more words. Guests get just one five-word list, and their progress stays on that device.

Progress and classroom tools

A dashboard tracks accuracy and word mastery. Teacher accounts add classroom management and student progress monitoring, making SpellMe more relevant to educators than a practice app focused only on individual learners. Teacher Premium includes full classroom progress reports, described as coming soon, so that particular capability should not be treated as an available reporting feature yet.

Premium tools and privacy

Premium adds smart spelling hints, image-based list generation, automatically created lists and AI progress summaries. These can reduce list preparation and help interpret progress, but they sit above the core spelling practice rather than being necessary for every learner.

SpellMe requires an internet connection and has no offline access, which rules it out for practice where connectivity is unreliable. Its privacy policy says guest settings and game data are stored locally and not sent to SpellMe servers; Google Analytics cookies activate only with consent.

Pricing

Basic is free and includes five lists of up to 10 words each, more than 300 curated phonics lists and Regular Mode. It is a sensible starting point for a learner who can work within those caps, but it excludes Mastery and the larger list limits of paid tiers.

Advanced costs £12 per year and includes 20 words per list, unlimited lists, Mastery Mode and advanced progress tracking. Its 14-day free trial gives families or individual learners a way to assess the adaptive practice before paying. Premium costs £20 per year and raises list capacity to 100 or more words, adding Story Mode and the smart and AI-assisted tools. The extra £8 per year over Advanced makes most sense when those features or larger lists matter.

Teacher Advanced and Teacher Premium use custom pricing. Teacher Advanced includes Regular and Mastery modes, unlimited lists, student progress tracking, a teacher dashboard and easy classroom login. Teacher Premium adds Story Mode, smart hints and full classroom progress reports, with those reports marked as coming soon. Guest use is more restricted than Basic: one list of up to five words, with progress stored locally.

Platforms

SpellMe is a web app that works on most browser-based devices, including Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android. It is also described as available on Android, iOS, Linux, macOS, web and Windows. Because it requires internet access, broad device support does not mean it can be used offline.

Who it's for

SpellMe suits families, homeschoolers and teachers who want spelling practice with adjustable difficulty and visible progress. Basic works for short lists and Regular Mode; Advanced is the stronger fit for learners who need adaptive practice or many lists. Premium is for those who will use Story mode, large lists or the AI-assisted tools. Those who need offline practice or extensive lists without paying should look elsewhere.

Pros and cons

Pros: Basic includes curated phonics lists and Regular Mode at no cost, so learners can begin without a subscription.
Pros: Mastery adjusts difficulty to performance, while progress tracking shows accuracy and word mastery.
Pros: Teacher accounts provide classroom management and student progress monitoring, addressing needs beyond individual practice.
Cons: The free Basic plan caps users at five lists of 10 words and omits Mastery and Story modes.
Cons: Internet access is required, so SpellMe is not a choice for offline practice.
Cons: Teacher plans have custom pricing, and Teacher Premium's full classroom reports are coming soon.

Alternatives

Browse Spelling Apps for more options. Choose Spelling Shed if its free plan's seven-day histories, hive games, challenges, custom leagues or classroom rostering better suit the way you organise practice. Wordshark is a paid alternative with a free trial and support for Android, iOS, macOS, web and Windows. Consider Better Speller if you want a free trial covering up to 35 words and 10 per list, or its one-time iCloud Sync and Sharing purchase. Spelling Boost offers a free Android option with audio dictation tests, custom lists, handwriting input and progress tracking. PenPoints is a free Android and iOS option for teachers, with limits on homework, credits and live assessments for users without a school plan. Spelling.Live starts with 200 free credits that expire after 90 days without a practice session, and also sells credit packs. Spello is worth considering for families seeking up to four children and unlimited practice, though its family plan has a daily per-child cap and rises from £10 for the first year to £20/year. DoodleSpell is another paid alternative with a school subscription option.

Verdict

SpellMe is a strong fit for families, homeschoolers and teachers who want spelling practice that can adapt to a learner and make progress visible. The free Basic tier provides a practical entry point, while Advanced is the clearest upgrade for Mastery Mode and unlimited lists. Look elsewhere if offline access is essential, or compare options before committing to Premium if its Story and AI tools are not priorities.
