Overview

Slatefox starts with pasted script text, which its parser separates into scenes and characters. Its AI Script Parser can produce scenes, cast and breakdowns in one pass, giving a small crew a quicker route from script to planning than assembling those pieces separately. The tool then carries that breakdown into scheduling, call sheets and continuity notes.

The workflow is designed to work offline, and Slatefox says scripts stay on users’ devices without an account. Cloud sync is also offered for productions that need to move between devices. That combination is useful for location work, though teams should decide whether device-local scripts or synced access better fits their workflow.

Key features

Scheduling and breakdowns

Users can create a stripboard, arrange shoot days on a calendar and review page totals. Auto Day-Out groups scenes by location, interior or exterior, day or night, and cast availability; importantly, it presents suggestions for review before applying them. That makes it a practical planning aid rather than an opaque schedule generator.

The Day Simulator updates overtime, daylight, turnaround and day structure as users test schedule changes. Those moving parts matter when a small change to a shoot day can affect the crew’s time or available light. Slatefox also generates day-out-of-days reports automatically, reducing a separate reporting step.

On-set coordination

Call sheets can be generated as PDFs with sun, weather and cast call times. Continuity notes and photos can be pinned to scenes, keeping visual references and observations tied to the relevant material. Cast and crew tracking and location management round out the production-planning tools.

Pricing

Slatefox has a Free plan at no cost, described as free to try. The paid plans are Indie at 19.00 EUR per month, billed per month, and Studio at 59.00 EUR per month, billed per month. Both include script breakdown; Studio is for running several productions at once. Indie is the more direct fit for a single production, while Studio’s stated distinction is simultaneous productions.

The published plan descriptions do not give seat or quota caps, so there is no basis to weigh those limits between tiers. The Free plan’s included features and any trial length are also not defined here; crews should confirm those before relying on it for a full production.

Platforms

Slatefox runs on the web. Its offline mode can help crews working without a signal, but the platform list does not include native desktop or mobile apps.

Who it's for

Slatefox is a sensible fit for producer-directors, first assistant directors, student crews and small teams making shorts, music videos, commercials, web series, documentaries or features. Its integrated breakdown, schedule, call-sheet and continuity workflow is particularly relevant when a crew wants production planning in one web tool without depending on a persistent connection. Teams that need platform choice beyond web should consider other options.

Pros and cons

Pros

Connected planning workflow: Script breakdowns feed into scheduling, call sheets and scene-based continuity notes, making the tool well suited to small crews coordinating several planning steps.
Schedule review tools: Auto Day-Out offers reviewable groupings, while Day Simulator reflects overtime, daylight and turnaround changes as the schedule shifts.
Offline-oriented use: Working without a signal, alongside optional cloud sync, addresses both location constraints and multi-device workflows.

Cons

Web only: Crews looking for a native app across desktop and mobile platforms will need to look elsewhere.
Studio is needed for multiple productions: Indie’s lower monthly price is less suited to teams running several productions at once.
Free-plan scope is unclear: The Free tier is described as free to try, but its feature and usage limits are not defined.

Alternatives

Film Production Scheduling Software is a useful place to compare scheduling tools. Choose Gorilla Scheduling if you want macOS or Windows alongside web, or need its collaboration and certain reports or exports, fringes and integrated Ratebook through a paid plan. Filmustage is worth considering if AI breakdown is central and a free tier with partial AI breakdown across 20% of scenes is enough to start.

StudioBinder offers a free tier with one project and tightly capped sample call sheets and production elements, making it an alternative for a very limited starting workflow. PreProducer may suit teams that want platform choices including Linux and Windows, with a single-project option billed as a one-time booking. Studiovity is the broader platform choice, spanning Android, iOS, desktop and web, with an education monthly plan.

CineLog is an option for crews seeking mobile and desktop access with a free tier capped at one active project, 50 MB of media storage and two collaborators. Production Slate has Android, iOS and web support, and its free plan sets explicit caps on projects, crew and shoot days. Prescene is a web option if a screenplay editor with unlimited drafts and no AI usage on its free tier is the priority.

Verdict

Slatefox is best for indie crews that want script breakdown, scheduling and on-set planning joined in one workflow, particularly when internet access is unreliable. Its offline design and schedule tools are the main reasons to choose it; its web-only reach and the lack of clear Free-plan boundaries are reasons to compare alternatives before committing.
