Overview

TIPP10 is a free ten-finger touch-typing tutor for browser and desktop use. It combines a sequence of guided lessons with practice that responds to typing errors, while progress records help learners see changes in speed and accuracy. The maker describes it as suitable for beginners and children, and says schools and universities have used it.

The online and desktop versions are not equally current. The maker recommends the online version because the downloadable software is no longer maintained. The desktop download is offered under the GNU General Public License, but its age is especially relevant for Mac users: the listed macOS version supports 10.3 through 10.14 and does not work from macOS 10.15 Catalina onward.

Key features

Guided lessons that adapt

The tutor has 20 sequential practice lessons that introduce keyboard characters over time. Letters a learner mistypes receive more practice in later lessons. Guided lessons, adaptive practice, skill diagnostics, and personalized drills are listed capabilities, making TIPP10 a structured option for learners who want a defined route through typing practice.

Progress records and custom practice

TIPP10 records error and speed statistics, lesson history, and a trend diagram. It can also produce printable lesson reports. Learners can make their own lessons, select open lessons on subjects such as programming or legal texts, or load personal texts for dictation. This allows practice to follow either the tutor's sequence or a specific topic or text.

Layouts, languages, and access

The interface and lessons are available in English and German. Listed keyboard layouts include QWERTY, German, Swiss, Neo, Dvorak, and RISTOME. The maker lists 39 keyboard layouts overall. The online sign-in page offers Google, Apple, and Microsoft sign-in, as well as a free account registration form.

Pricing

TIPP10 is freemium, with a free plan and donations accepted. The listed plan, Tipp10, costs 0.00 USD per free. The pricing note also says paid plans start at €15/yr, though it does not explain what that paid option includes. A 30-day trial is listed in the pricing note, while the separate free-trial field says no.

Platforms

TIPP10 is listed for Linux, macOS, web, and Windows. Offline mode is listed, but the downloadable desktop software is no longer maintained; the maker points users to the online version as the more up-to-date option. Mac users should note the compatibility cutoff: the listed download does not work on macOS 10.15 Catalina or later.

Who it's for

TIPP10 suits people who want guided touch-typing practice, including beginners and children, whom the maker specifically identifies as intended users. Its custom lessons, subject-based open lessons, and dictation with personal texts may also suit learners seeking practice material for a particular topic. Schools and universities have used it, although the school or company platform is described on the homepage as available soon.

The maker says TIPP10 has no advertising or tracking. Its online privacy policy nevertheless describes session and persistent cookies and anonymized usage data, so users concerned about online data should review those details. Support is available through documentation, FAQs, bug reports, suggestions, and a contact form. The maker says it cannot provide telephone or email assistance for the free software.

Verdict

TIPP10 offers a clear learning sequence, adaptive repetition, useful progress records, and room to practice with custom material, all alongside a free plan. Its main caveat is version choice: the desktop software is unmaintained, and the listed Mac download stops at macOS 10.14. The online version is the maker's recommended, more up-to-date route; users who need dedicated support or a currently maintained desktop app should weigh those limits before choosing it.
